PC

Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) or Mac (OS-X 10.5 and later).

It can run on laptop PCs.
The software requires high graphic performance.

PC projector

Normal PC projector.
Brighter is bettter.
Short range type is not suitable because it make large shadow on the spherical screen.

Spherical screen

Any white spheres or white half-spheres can be used as the spherical screen of Dagik
Earth.
Polystyrene foam spheres could be purchaed through the internet. You can search
them with keywords, "polystyrene foam half ball" or something. 60cm diameter one is
enough to be used in a small classroom.
Polyethylene Balloon type half-spheric screen is portable. We order it to a local
balloon factory. 1m diameter one costs about US$150. We can provide the design
sheet of the screen. Please contact info@dagik.org.

Contents

Downlaod
Contents (Dagik Earth software) are on "Download" page. The most file is large in size.
Please try a small one, "Earth/Moon/Planets" (10Mbyte), as a trial. Files are compatible for
both Windows and Mac.

Unzip the file

Contents are compressed with "zip", so expand it. A folder whose name starts "Dagik_" will
be made.
"Dagik_Earth.exe" and "Dagik_Earth.app" in the folder is executables for Windows and Mac,
respectively.

Run

Double click "Dagik_Earth.exe" or "Dagik_Earth.app" , a window will open, and afeter a few
minutes the earth image will be displayed. Maximize the window by clicking the central
buttom on the top-right corner of the window (Windows) or the right buttom on the top-left
corner of the window (Mac).

Equipments setup and exhibition

Projection

Hook the PC projector to the PC as an external display, and project the Earth image on the
spheric screen.

Adjust the PC projector

Adjust he earth image projected from the PC projector and the spheric screen. Actually, it is
difficult to make a perfect adjustment, so don't mind a slight difference

What is Dagik Earth?

Dagik Earth is an educational project to enjoy the scientific outputs on the earth and planets
with three-dimensional digital globe in classrooms, science centers and home, and led by Dr.
A. Saito. It is a sub project of Dagik (http://dagik.org) by the visualization group of the Earth
science hub of Kyoto University.
It is supported by a grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and
Technology (MEXT) of Japan between FY 2009 and FY 2011 to develop the system and
educational programs. Kyoto University, National Institute of Information and
Communications Technology, National Museum of Nature and Science, Shizuoka Science
Museum, and Shizuoka University participate in this project.

How does it work?

The earth and planets are projected on a spherical screen with a PC projector and a PC. No
special PC and projector are needed. You can use a normal PC and projector. The software of
Dagik Earth is open and can be run on Windows and Macintosh. As the spherical screen, a
white balloon can be used.

Dagik Earth in classroom

Dagik Earth is an open system in equipments and software to be used for educational
programs with low costs. The size of Dagik Earth is from 8cm diameter to 7m diameter, so
far.

What is the advantage to present the earth
in 3-dimensional way?

The only way to present the correct shape on the Earth, a sphere, is to present it in three
dimension. Any map distorts the shape.
