AT MAGADH UNIVERSITY, BODH GAYA (BIHAR)

INTRODUCTION:
IIM Bodh Gaya is one of the six new generation Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) in
the country established as per the decision of the Union Cabinet on 24th June 2015. It was
inaugurated on 31st August 2015. It is located in the sprawling campus of Magadh University
(Bodh Gaya, Bihar 824234). Till its 118 acre permanent campus comes up, IIM Bodh Gaya
will operate from the state-of-the art Institute of Distance Education building of the Magadh
University. The newly constructed boys and girls hostel are already in place. IIM Bodh Gaya
is being mentored by the IIM Calcutta (the oldest IIM in the country). In effect, students in
IIM Bodh Gaya follow the PGP curriculum of IIM Calcutta and will be taught by the faculty
members of IIMC. They partake of the academic rigor for which IIMC is known for. In all other
respects, IIM Calcutta assists IIM Bodh Gaya.

PROJECT RATIONALE:
Bodh Gaya presents a number of lucrative opportunities to a potential investor. Some critical
success factors that point to the potential of any project in Bodh Gaya include the following:

The epicenter of Buddhism- Bodh Gaya: Bodh Gaya is the epicenter of Buddhism as well
as is the strategic locus of the Buddhist circuit consisting of Rajgir, Nalanda, Vaishali,
Patna, Pawapuri, and Kesaria. It acts as a point of entry and exit for visitors specially
Buddhist Tourists from major South East Asian nations.

UN World Heritage Site: The Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya, India has been accorded
the status of a World Heritage Site, recognition offered to rare sites that are of
outstanding value to humanity. The declaration has helped this epitome of Buddhist
faith to avail UNESCO funds for conservation, protection and maintenance on a
sustainable basis.
Accessibility: Bodh Gaya has excellent connectivity within India by road and rail. It is an
important junction between Delhi and Calcutta both by road (Golden Quadrilateral) and
rail (Grand Chord).

But, the USP of any infrastructure project in Bodh Gaya is the connectivity through the
Gaya airport which currently has direct flights from Bangkok (Thailand), Rangoon (Burma),
Dhaka (Bangladesh), Paro (Bhutan), Colombo (Sri Lanka) as well as all the major cities of
India. The Gaya airport currently operates more than 800 flights annually. It is also
increasingly ramping up its airport capacity to cater to a large international tourist base.

AIM:
The project is aimed at creating an architectural form for the permanent campus of the newly
established IIM in Bodh Gaya while translating the adherent features of the surrounding built
fabric to a contemporary definition ready to match the standards of a World Heritage Site. It
will be developed on the basis thorough study of the context in addition to the spatial interaction
of the activities for the following components:

CONTEXT:
Semi-Urban area with a great religious value for Buddhist pilgrimage and associated with UNESCO
World Heritage Site Mahabodhi Temple within a radius of 3Kms. New development plan
proposed for Bodh-Gaya ensures a sustainable and prosperous future.

SCOPE & LIMITATION:

The project will incline towards achieving a rational and futuristic definition for buildings
built on heritage sites that are identified by their own Architectural and Archaeological
History.
It will also venture into analysis of spatial interaction based on inter-activity relations.
Any kind of addition or subtraction in the urban fabric around may not be involved.

STAGES OF DESIGN DEVELOPMENT:

1. Study of Site, Context and Architectural expression.
2. Formulation of Activities and Sub-Activities
3. Understanding the hierarchy and interdependence of activities with respect to users.
4. Site development, local connectivity and place making for public.
5. Development of built spaces and forms on the lines of 3rd stage.
6. Architectural details, services and relevance.

SITE: The project would be set up in around 70 acres of land in Magadh University at Bodh-
Gaya. It is well connected to all means of transport.

Locally : Gaya town by Road 9kms

Nationally : Golden Quadrilateral NH 23kms , Railways 9Kms
Internationally: to Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Burma and Bhutan via airport
4kms away.
