J. K.

Rowling

British author Joanne Kathleen Rowling became famous with her series of novels dedicated to the
adventures of Harry Potter, one of the greatest literary phenomena in history. The adventures of an
orphaned child with magic powers able to evade at will to a fantasy world managed to beat all sales
records in the literature of the genre, although many critics were reluctant to pigeonhole Rowling's
books as children's stories, such as Happened with Mark Twain's famous Tom Sawyer.

The person who made it possible for many children and teenagers to read a book to spend the dead
hours in front of the television is a shy Brit who set out to write seven installments of the series,
which are equivalent to the courses that the protagonist must overcome in the school of Magic and
witchcraft he attends when he escapes from the horrible everyday reality in the house of his petty
uncles.

According to some literary critics, the author managed to create in her novels a disturbing
atmosphere attractive to the readers of very diverse condition and age, from influences
recognizable in the books of British writers like Enid Blyton, Richmal Crompton or Roald Dahl. But,
paradoxically, she herself claimed that she never intended to write fantasy and that the idea arose
from her own memories of childhood. Practically unfamiliar and having economic problems in the
first half of the 1990s, when she lived on a modest pension as unemployed, JK Rowling became a
wealthy and popular woman in Europe and especially in the United States, where multitudes of
children accompanied By their parents they would endure long queues in the bookstores to get to
the last adventures of the small magician.

The childhood that fed Potter

Joanne Kathleen Rowling was born on July 31, 1965 in the small British town of Chipping Sodbury
near Bristol in the southwest of the island. Due to the work of his father, Peter, engineer of the Rolls-
Royce company married to Anne, a Scotswoman with French roots, his family had to change of
residence several times during the infancy of the small Jo and Di, affectionate familiar appeals of
the future novelist and her younger sister, Dianne.

After a short stay in Yate, they moved to Winterbourne, always without leaving the suburbs of
Bristol, where they forged the first memories of the imaginative girl, who spent hours sharing
dreams and fantasies with her sister. Early reader and writer, enthusiast fond of devouring novels

In Winterbourne, the girls made friends among the neighborhood; One of them was named Ian
Potter. Affected to adopt strange names for the protagonists and places of its novels, many years
later Joanne borrowed that name to give life to its famous personage. When Jo was nine years old,
the Rowling made their dream come true and moved to a rural area of Gwent County called the
Forest of Dean, a town near Chepstow, where the two sisters discovered the pleasure of playing in
nearby British green fields To the river Wye.

But the happy change had its counterpart in the problems in the new school that the Rowling
attended and that ended up becoming a torment for the greater of the sisters, who would
remember for years to its hated professor Mrs. Morgan, to the point To transfer it to his novels and
make it incarnate one of its malevolent characters.

The freckled, studious and rather insecure "gafotas" Joanne, according to his own definition, grew
up and left the Tutshill primary school to enter the Wyedean, where he became interested in
languages. Alumna applied, soon also emphasized by its liking to tell stories to a reduced circle of
friends, who listened with attention to the narration of long stories in the times of recess. During
his adolescence he wrote a lot, but, with the exception of some funny stories, he never dared to
show his manuscripts to anyone.

Difficult years

After graduating from Wyedean, Joanne K. Rowling enrolled at the University of Exeter, where,
following the paternal advice, she studied French for the purpose of finding a good job as a bilingual
secretary. With French language and literature still sparkling, he moved to Amnesty International's
London headquarters to conduct research on human rights violations in French-speaking Africa.
