THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Our circulatory system transports the nutrients we eat and the oxygen we
breathe to our organs, bones, brain and muscles.

Stages:

- When blood enters the heart, its pumped to the lungs.

- In the lungs, the red blood cells absorb oxygen.
- The oxygenated blood is pumped back into the heart.
- The heart pumps the oxygenated blood around the body through blood vessels,
arteries (wide tubes that carry a lot of blood), veins (narrow tubes that carry
small quantities of blood) and capillaries (connect the smallest arteries to the
smallest veins).

Whats blood made up of?

Our blood contains 3 types of cells:

- Red blood cells: absorb oxygen in the lungs and transport it to the organs and
muscles.
- White blood cells: fight germs and infections in our body.
- Platelets: help to stop bleeding when we have a cut.

THE HEART

It has four chambers: the two upper chambers are called the atria and the two lower
chambers are called ventricles.

When blood goes into the heart, it enters the atria and goes to the ventricles.

When the ventricels contract, they push the blood out of the heart.
