Great Day Trips

A
weekend is a great opportunity to get
out of the city. There’s a plethora of
nearby options that are just a couple
hours away from the center of Manhattan.
Despite their close location, these trips are
worlds away from urban life.

Dutchess County is located about 75 miles from both New York City and
Albany. The county is bordered by the Hudson River to the west and the
Connecticut border on the east. “It’s just a great place to come and stay
for a week or so, and just take day trips,” says Mary Kay Vrba, director of
Dutchess County Tourism.

It has several historical areas, including President Franklin Delano

Roosevelt’s Hyde Park Home and the Vanderbilt Mansion, as well as the
world’s longest pedestrian bridge, Walkway Over the Hudson, which opened
last October. The Dutchess County Fair in Rhinebeck at the end of August
has horse shows, food and performances, while Dia Beacon and the Richard
B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College offers world class
dance, theater and music. The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park
is one of the world’s premier culinary colleges, and operates a number of
restaurants within its campus, with American, French and Italian cuisine,
along with the Apple Pie Bakery Café. There are numerous wineries, bike

Museum, featuring the artwork of the Wyeth family. Historical
homes and gardens dot the rolling hills, along with numerous
state parks and rivers. Although known more for its daytime Nassau, Bahamas
