JustrecentlyIhadmyN5200dieonme.IamprettysureitwastheDOMthatfailed,butwhatever
itwasIcouldnolongeraccessmydata.Icouldn'tfindmuchinfoonhowtorecoverthedata,just
thatitwaspossiblethankstoThecususingLinuxonthisbox.IntheendIfigureditoutandhave
recoveredthedata,sothoughtothersmightappreciatealittleHOWTO.

IamnoLinuxguru,andcannotsayforcertaintheprocessIwentthroughwillworkforyou.

Firstup,Igotanewmotherboardthatwouldsupport6SATAdrives.IwentwithaGigabyteGA
965GDS3,putin2GBofRAM,andoldharddriveandaCore2Duo.UsingunetbootinIcreated
abootableUSBkeywithUbuntu8.04onit.WhenIfiredupthemachinewiththeUSBkey
pluggedinIhadtroublebootingfromtheUSBkey.ThetrickwiththemoboIwasusingistohit
F12justafterturningthemachineon(sowhileisitdoingit'sPOST)tobringuptheBootMenu.
FromthereIselectedHardDrive(ascounterintuitiveasthatsounds)andthenselectedtheUSB
key.ItbootedtotheUbuntumenuwhereIselectedtoInstallUbuntuontheoldharddrive.NOTE:
TheHDD'sfrommyRAIDwereNOTpluggedinatthisstage!IftheywerepluggedinUbuntu
threatenstochangetheirpartitiontablesIdon'tknowifitactuallywill,butit'snotworthtaking
thechance.OnceUbuntuwasinstalledIupdateditusingtheUpdateManager(System
>Administration>UpdateManager)theninstalledanAppcalled"Stress"andstresstestedthe
machineovernightusingoneofthecompressionbenchmarkers.

InthemorningthemachinewasstablesoIwentaboutpreparingitfortherecovery.FirstupIhad
toinstallmdadmandLVM2withthefollowingcommandsinaterminalwindow:

sudoaptgetinstallmdadm
sudoaptgetinstalllvm2

AtthispointIrealisedIwasgoingtogettiredofusingsudoallthetimesodidaBADthingand
resetthesupasswordsoIcouldjustswitchusertorootandworkfromthereasfollows:

sudosu
sudopasswd

OnceIhadsetthesupasswordIwasreadytoshutthePCdownandplugintheharddrivesfrom
myThecus.OnceIcarefullydidthatandfireditupagainitwouldn'tboot.Itturnsoutthiswas
becauseIhadtogointotheBIOSandundertheAdvancedsettingchangetheharddrivebootorder
sothatitwasn'ttryingtobootfromoneoftheRAIDHDD'sthatdidn'thaveanOSonthem.OnceI
hadputmyoldHDDwithUbuntuonittothenumber1slotIbootedintoUbuntuwithoutincident.
Ithenopennedupaterminalwindowandswitchedusertodoeverythingasroot.

Thisshouldgiveareadoutofthe"md"deviceswhichshouldincludeyourRAIDarrays(md0,
md1,md2,etc).Ifyourarray'sshowupinthemd'sthenyou'rehalfwaythere!Nowit'stimeto
workonthe"Volumes"asThecus/LinuxusetheLVM2volumes.Firstup,wescanforthevolumes
withthiscommand

RunningthatcommandshouldmakeLinuxrecognisethatyoudon'thaveanLVMconfigfile,soit
recoversonefromyouRAIDarrayandputsitin/etc/lvm/backupforyou.Now,thankstoThecus
fornotusingthedefaultnamingschemeforthevolumes(whichis"VolGroup01","VolGroup02",
etc)wedon'thavetoworryaboutrenamingthevolumegroups.Thecusnamethevolumegroups
"vg0","vg1",etc.SOwejustneedtorestoretheLVMconfigfilefromtheonebackedupforusby
vgscanusingthesecommands
cd/etc/lvm/backup
vgcfgrestorefvg0vg0
vgscan
Thisassumesthevolumegroupconfigfileinthe/etc/lvm/backupdirectoryisvg0.runningthe
vgscancommandagainsimplyverifiesthatthevolumegroupshavebeenfound.Nowwescanfor
thephysicalvolumesusing
pvscan
Thisshouldlistthephysicalvolumesalongwiththeirsizeforyou.NowweneedtoActivatethe
volume,butnotbeforeweloadtheappropriatekernelmodulein(otherwiseyou'llhitabrickwall

Withthatyoushouldgetaconfirmationthatthevolumeisnowactive.Nowwescanforthelogical

(again,Thecusdon'tseemtohaveusedtheLinuxdefaultlogigicalvolumenamingschemewhichis

Andwithabitofluck,youshouldnowbeabletoaccessyourpreciousdatainthe"/mnt"directory.

TheonlystepleftnowistoinstallandsetupSambasoyoucanaccessthedataonyournetwork.
Thereareplentyofguidesoutthereforthatthough,sojustGoogle"UbuntuSamba"orthelikeand
doit.(Iusedthisonewww.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/installsambaserveronubuntu/)

Now,thisisnotapermanentsolution,butitshouldallowyoutoaccessthedataandputit
somewhereelsewhileyoutryandfigureoutthebestwayforward.Ifyouwanttomakeita
permanentsolution,you'llprobablyneedtofindawayofautomaticallymountingthevolumes
everytimeyoureboot.Idon'tknow,Ihaven'trebootedyet.OnceIhaverecoveredallmydataI

I'musingUbuntu10.04LTS.Acoupleofthings:

First,Iwasreadingthatthemdadm2.6.7mayhaveissueswhenimportingaforeignRAID,soI
installedmdadm2.6.4whichsupposedlydoesnothavethisbug.

Second,whenIassembledtheRAID,Ihadtoaddautoupdatehomehosttothecommandline,as

sudomdadmassemblescanautoupdatehomehostverbose
Thearrayiscurrentlyresyncing,asitdidn'tparticularlyenjoyenduringafreezeandhardpower

Update:
It'snowrebuilt,mounted(usingtherestoftheseinstructions,nofurtherspeedbumps)andIcan
copyfiles.Hadtomesswithpermissions,butthatdoesn'tsurprisememuch.

RAID5isdegraded.IknewIwasontherighttrack.

inactive.Theerrorissomethinglikethis:

Afterbackingthemup,IplacedalltheharddisksinN4200PROinsamesequenceasbefore.

Viola!!!ThedegradeRAIDmessageisback!!IwentaheadtoAddSparetosynctheRAID.After
6hours,everythingisbackinorder(usernames,sharedfolders,andetc).

Next,IcouldpingtheThecusbutmyWindowsPCsarenotabletomaporopentheNAS.The
causeofit?IguessIwassillytoupgradetheFirmwaremyveryfirstmistake.
AfterseveralunfruitfulattemptstosettheThecus,Idecidedtodoafactorydefaultreset.Another
mistake!!Ishouldhavebackeduptheconfigurations(users,usergroups,andsystem).
Afterthefactorydefaultreset,IcanseetheN4200PRObutunabletologin.Itisbecausetheusers,
usergroup,andetcweredeleted.Irecreatedtheusersgroup,usernames,passwords,andothers
(ACL).

Iinstalled"UFSExplorerRaidAddition"onthepc.Followedthedirectionsto"buildtheraid"and
within5minuteswasabletostartrestoringdatafromraid5thecus.
TheapplicationwasalsoabletomountanSSDthatIhadbeenusingforESXformatedwithvmfs
(hadtoupgradetotheproaddition).ItwastrivialtomountandpulloutsomevmdksthatIwanted
