XL2

Disassembly
The world leader in serving science Procedure

Wayne Minter

Goal of this Procedure

This procedure has been created as a reference guide for in house /

Service personnel to use when disassembling XL2 units.

The goal is to have a set of instructions in place as a guide for any

devices in need of repairs. Many components in the instrument are
very fragile and need special care, following the instructions will help
to minimize damaging of components due to improper removal.

Depending on the extent of the repair, There may only be segments of

this procedure that need to be used.

Remove front end from snout

Remove the Detector from front end

Remove filter wheel

3
Separate top & bottom / Remove mounting screws

Place the unit top down on a clean flat work surface. Remove all
six housing screws (two different sizes).

Tools:
( Philips head driver).

4
Separate top & bottom / remove 50 pin cable

use tweezers to carefully pry the

connector out.
(See next slide for example)

5
Separate top & bottom / Removing 50 pin connector
Place a strong set of
tweezers, or a small Flat
head screw driver under
the edge at one end of
the connector
Carefully pry on this to
start to loosen the
connection
Move your tool to the
other side of the
connector and pry up on
this to assure even
pressure and that you are
not twisting the
connector.

6
Checking connector for damage

Check in side the connectors when you have removed the cables to
verify there has not been any damage to the pin within.
In some cases one pin can be bent over and short out to the one next to
it, this will cause all kinds of errors with the system.

7
Separate top & bottom / Remove co axle cable

Grab the Connector with Needle nose pliers

Pull away from the PCB, while giving the connector a slight twist
End result you should still see the retainer attached to the FPGA PCB

8
Separate top & bottom / Damaged Last connection!

This is a common problem when servicing the XL3t.

This can cause loss in spectra, or a noise issue.
The quick fix is to re insert the Brass piece in to the FPGA Card, you will need to
Clamp on the two brass party to assure they are a good tight fit.
The other option for this is to replace the FPGA PCB.

9
Separate top & bottom / Removal of the Tube control cable

Remove the 20pin control cable from the

Charger PCB
Try to grab both sides of the connector
and pull evenly, this will help to prevent
damaging the cable.

Now the top and bottom housings

can be separated.

until it is free from the handle.

14
Tube removal

Remove the two smaller screws from the front of the tube first.
Tools: ( 5/64 Driver).

Remove front end from snout

Lift up on the detector end of the assembly first, then work it out of the
snout at about a 45 angle .
Once the assembly is out of the snout remove the proxy cable
connector.

19
Remove the Detector from front end

Remove the four mounting screws,

Tools: (Philips driver and a 5/64 driver.)

Remove the Detector from front end

Once the screws are removed, gently pull the detector out of the front
end.
