COME SAIL AWAY WITH ME

PEACOAT

This design is based on a pea coat which I wore for most of my

teenage years, until it became quite ragged and no longer
wearable. My knitted version is double breasted with the front
bands knitted in, thus eliminating the need to “pick up and
knit” them , which, if not done with the correct ratio of
stitches to rows, can often lead to such a wonky and wavy
appearance that it can ruin the entire finished product and
will most likely end up in the “to be finished when I have the
patience of Job” basket, along with all the other rejects from
years gone by. ! The sleeves are picked up and knit
downwards from the armhole edges thus avoiding the
frustration of sewing the finished sleeve into the armhole. It is
knit with bulky weight yarn making it a very quick knit,
especially if knitting one for a child. The bands, sleeve cuffs
and edges are all knit in a double basket weave stitch pattern;
an easy 8 row, 4 stitch repeat, which adds to the nautical
look. Here’s wishing you “smooth sailing” in all of your knitting
endeavors!

MATERIALS:

Bulky weight yarn as follows: * NOTE * These are generous estimates.

CHILD’S: 425(550,750) yards

ADULT’S: 1000(1100,1250,1400) yards
2 pairs of straight needles in 8 and 10 or size needed to obtain gauge
crochet hook: *Optional (used to pick up stitches for the collar and sleeves)
2 stitch holders, tapestry needle and stitch markers (optional)
Buttons: size and amount are personal choice. The child’s smallest size requires as little as 4
buttons and the adult sizes could require as many as 10 – 12 buttons

GOOD TO KNOW:

BO: Bind off

C0: Cast on
K: Knit
P: Purl
M1: Inset our left needle from front to back under the horizontal strand between the last
stitch on the right needle and the first stitch on the left needle. K through the back of this
strand (one stitch increase)
Pm: Place marker
3 Needle Bind Off: With wrong sides together, place the shoulder stitches from the back and
corresponding front, with the needles facing the same direction. With a third needle, knit the
1st stitches from the front and back needles together, using the yarn end from the shoulder as
the working yarn. Leave the 1st stitch from the K2tog on the right needle, and then k2tog on
the following stitches. Now slip the 1st stitch from the right needle over the 2nd stitch and
continue in this manner to the end of the row. * NOTE * Binding off with the wrong sides
together will form a visible shoulder seam on the right side of the jacket. This is a design
feature only so if this is not appealing to you then work the bind offs with the right sides
together.
K2tog: Knit 2 stitches together
Rs: Right side
Ws: Wrong side
Ssk: Slip the first two stitches from the left needle one at a time as if to knit, put the left
needle from top to bottom through the front of the 2 slipped stitches and knit them together
St: stitch

GAUGE:
12 x 18 = 4” in stocking stitch using the larger needles

DOUBLE BASKETWEAVE STITCH PATTERN:

ROWS 1,3,5,7 (rs) : Knit across all stitches

ROWS 2 & 4 (ws) : * K3,P1 * Repeat these stitches between the asterisks 9(11,13)x -
15(17,18,20)x, ending with K3 for all sizes
ROWS 6 & 8 (ws) : K1,P2 * (K3,P1) * repeat the stitches between the asterisks the same
number of times as given for rows 2 and 4. End all sizes with a K1.

INSTRUCTIONS:

COAT BACK:
With smaller needles CO 39(47,55) st - 63(71,75,83) st and K 1 row. Begin knitting the
Double Basketweave stitch pattern for 2 full repeats (16 rows) for all sizes.
Change to larger needles and continue working in stocking st until work measures 8(9,10)” -
14(15,15,16)” from the CO row, ending with the rs facing.
BO 2(3,4) st - 5(5,6,6,) st at the beginning of this row the the beginning of the following row
(35,41,47) - (53,61,63,71) st are now remaining.
Continue working in stocking st until armhole measures 6(7,8) - 9(10,11,12) “ , ending with a rs
row facing.
Finish the last row as follows: K 10(13,14) - 17(19,20,22) st, then BO 15(15,19) - 19(23,23,27)
sts. K the remaining stitches to the end of the row.
Place the live shoulder stitches on a holder.

LEFT FRONT:

* NOTE * This is the button side for the female version and the buttonhole side for the male
version. If knitting for a male, knit the RIGHT FRONT first, as the button placement must be
measured before the buttonhole side is started. The buttonholes for the male are knit as
follows:
(rs) Work across stocking stitch pattern then K2,yo,K2tog,K, until 4 stitches from the edge,
then K2tog,yo,K2

INSTRUCTIONS:

With smaller needless CO 27(31,35) - 39(43,47,55) sts and K one row. Work in basketweave
stitch pattern for 2 full repeats (16 rows) , as follows:

ROWS 1,3,5 & 7 (rs) : Knit across all stitches

ALL SIZES (FEMALE) : Mark button placement as desired. The buttons closest to the collar
should be placed on the 4th row down from the neckline shaping. The remainder of the buttons
should be placed approx. 3.5” apart. The number of buttons are personal choice, however, there
should be a minimum of 4 buttons for proper closure.

RIGHT FRONT: * NOTE * This side should be worked 1st if knitting a male version because this
is the side that the button placement will be marked. The buttonholes for the Female version
should be worked as followed, over the stitches in line with the button placement as follows:
K2, yo,K2tog, K until 4 stitches from the end of the basketweave band then K2tog,yo,K2, -
pattern to end of the row

Follow the instructions between the set of asterisks as described for the Left Front. Reverse
the instructions between the 2nd set of asterisks so that the basketweave pattern starts at the
beginning of the 1st right side row after the 16 row basketweave edging is completed. The
stocking stitch pattern is worked to the end of the stitches remaining after the basketweave
pattern. Also note that the BO stitches for the armhole shaping are done at the beginning of a
wrong side row and the neck shaping is begun at the beginning of a right side row. For the
Male version mark for button placement and establish on which rows to place the buttonholes.

SHOULDER SEAMS:
ALL SIZES:

Join the coat back and right and left fronts, using the 3 needle BO as described in the “good
to know” section of the pattern.

SLEEVES:
With the larger needle pick up and K 37(43,49) – 55(61,67,73)sts between the armhole bind
offs. * Note * If you are working to the suggested gauge of 18 rows to 4” you will be picking
up 2 sts over 3 rows
Row 1(ws) : K all stitches – this will form a ridge on the rs of the sleeve and is a design choice
only. P all sts if you would rather not have this ridge
Row 2(rs) : K all sts and work straight in stocking st (K on rs, P on ws) for the next 4(4,6) –
6(8,8,8) rows (This part of the sleeve will be sewn together with the armhole bind off edge on
the coat before sewing together the side and sleeve seams)
Continuing in stocking st pattern, work decrease rows every 6th row 2(2,3) – 4(0,0,0) times,
every 4th row 5(8,8) – 10(17,18,17) times
On ADULT XLARGE ONLY: continue working decreases every second row 2 times
WORK DECREASE ROWS AS FOLLOWS for ALL SIZES:
Right Side: K1,ssk, K to 3 sts before the end of the row, K2tog, K1,
For All Sizes: work a P row following the last decrease row
After working all of the required decrease rows the following number of sts will remain for
working the cuff: 23(23,27) – 27(27,31,35)

THE CUFF: ALL SIZES:

Cuff Length is as desired, but remember to BO on either Row 1 or Row 5 of the pattern. Work
the basketweave pattern as follows:

Rows 1,3,5 & 7(rs) : K all stitches
