Animals - Key
Innovation in Learning
A A A A ENGLISH VOCABULARY
Ask the students to think of 2-3 more animals for each category.
2- In the wild
Explain the difference between a `predator' (an animal that hunts, kills and eats other animals) and `prey' (an
animal that is hunted and killed by another animal). Several prey are possible for some predators, e.g. wolves can
prey on goats, rabbits and mice and eagles can prey on rabbits and mice. Leopards can also eat young zebras.
1. f 2. b 3. d 4. c 5. a 6. e
4- Talking point
In a multi-lingual class, the students can work in pairs, ideally with partners of different nationalities. Pre-teach the
term `endangered species' (an animal which may soon not exist because there are very few alive).
5- Animal similes
Explain the term `simile' - an expression in which two unlike things are compared. Pre-teach any unfamiliar words,
e.g. awkward (clumsy, unskilful in movement).
1. as blind as a bat
2. as quiet as a mouse
3. as scared as a rabbit
4. as cunning as a fox
5. as awkward as a cow on roller skates
6. as fat as a pig
Go through the words and expressions in the sentences. Give examples where necessary, e.g. the crocodile - It
lives in rivers. It can be found in Africa. It preys on zebras. It needs water to survive, etc.
