Introduction
The Klang Valley is a rich source of architectural heritage dating from pre-colonial, colonial, post independence until present times. The
historical richness creates a very vibrant architectural fabric. Modern architecture emerged rapidly from the 1950s to 1970s in tandem with
economic growth. This followed the international style that spread across the world in the 1930s to 50s. However, many historical
modernistic buildings may face risk of being demolished to make way for more contemporary buildings. Thus, by recording, documenting
and analysing the buildings, we can contribute to preserve the historical evidence of the valuable Modern Architecture in the Klang Valley.
The findings are to be compiled in essays and to be submitted using a web book platform. Web book is a publication in digital form,
consisting of text (report), images, or both.
Learning Outcomes
1. Increase understanding on the principle, ideas and contributing factors of Modern Architecture in the Klang Valley
2. Able to analyse and identify specific architectural features of Modern Architecture in the Klang Valley
3. Able to document architectural heritage in the form of writings, descriptive diagrams and photography
4. Able to create a web book as a mean to publish academic materials
Tasks
Form a group of 5 students. The group will conduct a research and architectural analysis on a selected building. Each group will select
ONE building from the given list. The group may also choose their own modern buildings around the Klang Valley, subject to the
agreement of the lecturer. Among the buildings that can be chosen are:
Report
A report should be written documenting the findings of the analysis. You may support the information using photos, sketches and
diagrams as evidence. Cite your references. Avoid plagiarism. The report can be divided into:
Main Paragraph (Individual Components) consisting of Architectural style and construction analysis of the building
Site context analysis
o Building accessibility.
o Relationship of building to surroundings. (Compare the similarities or differences)
o Response to climate.
Architectural layout of building
o Plan to section or elevation analysis,
o Circulation to use-space
o Organization analysis: symmetry and balance, geometry, hierarchy.
Architecture style analysis
o Explain the specific style adopted and the characteristics of the style. Is it a pure modern building as in the
west or are there local influence? Identify and explain further if it has local influence.
Building construction, structure & materials analysis
o Explain specific materials and construction method used to construct the building. Compare the similarities
or differences with other modern buildings in the west.
Architectural elements / components analysis
o Identify and explain the significant components such as roof, windows, doors, fenestrations, shading,
staircase or other significant elements that can be found in the chosen building. Each building may have
different components. Analyse the significant components and use photos or sketches as evidence.
Conclusion (Group Components)
Students are expected to distribute the main paragraph accordingly and equally among all members. This is to ensure each student have
similar emphasis for individual assessment. Students are also advised to check the flow of the essay together even though they are
individually written.
