Watton Twinning Cream Tea
Our Cream Tea/Quiz afternoon held on
Sunday 2nd July was a great success, the
weather was glorious and we had a good
amount of people including Watton Town
Mayor Stan Hebborn and his wife
Mayoress Sue Hebborn.
The quiz was good fun although there were
some niggles that it was too difficult, but as
I didnt set the questions this year I didnt
get too much grief over it. There were plenty
of scones, jam and cream to have as many
as you liked although I did forget to put the
strawberries out until later on but they still

Following on from last years successful
Wacky Scrappy Gravity Races the Parish
Council have again agreed to sponsor
another day of madness and mayhem.
These races will take place on August 5th
with tinkering, practice and posturing
starting at 11:30, but the real racing starts
at 13:00. For those with a passion for
knocking up impractical machinery
coupled with a love of speed and driving
challenges this is surely for you.
There is still time to enter your pride and

This a great spectator sport so for those
wanting to get up close to the action these
races are not to be missed.
The course is all on a downward gradient
so the final furlong when speed is
phenomenal is the place to be.
The start is from a ramp which gives a bit
of impetus to the carts, from then it
follows down the eastern slope of Mount
Ov, by this time speed is increasing and to
make things interesting intruding on to the
track are some natural and some most
unnatural hazards. This is followed by the
most hairy bit where the contestants have
to negotiate a sharp right angled bend.
The track then follows the southern
moraine of Mount Ov, still descending
with the speed (if they have survived the
all got eaten. We also held a raffle. It was a
very pleasant afternoon and helped to raise
some funds for our Association. New
members are always welcome and we are
always looking for new ideas and places to
visit when our twinning guests visit Watton
next year.
Our next event will be the Watton
Carnival in September. Watton Twinning
Association, is about nurturing new
friendships and learning about new
cultures. Twinning membership is just
10 per year for a family and 7 for a
notorious Water End bend) fast
increasing. Approaching the finishing line
this is where we watch anxiously to see if
the contestants have thought about
installing a braking system and how
efficient it is.
A tradition in Ovington is that no-one
goes home hungry so the Good people
from the Village Hall will be providing a
BBQ and other refreshments during the
days fun.
With possibly other entertainment
provided for those with a lower threshold
of excitement. Do come along, this is a
spectacle you can ill afford to miss,
Carbrooke Church
Concert
Returning for a second concert is the
Soprano, Emma Nuule. This year,
because Ovington Church is closed for
much needed repairs, the concert will be
held in Carbrooke Church, with its
wonderful cathedral type acoustics, on
Friday, 25th August at 7pm. Proceeds will
be shared between Carbrooke and
Ovington Church.
After her recent outstanding success of
leading a choir of 1000 in the National
Anthem at a recent ceremony, this global
award-winning soprano will be
performing an extended repertoire of
popular classics and west end classics.
These may include Nella Fantasia, Ombra
Mai Fu, Rusalkas Song to the Moon, O
mio babbino caro and Youll Never Walk
single adult, which isnt a huge amount
but is necessary to pay our public liability
insurance, stationery costs etc.

trained by Marie Vassiliou after having
studied at The Central School of
Performing Arts.
Supporting her will be The Harmonettes,
a professional group of lady singers, who
will compliment Emmas performance
with a range including Sisters, Moon
River, Killing me Softly and I Believe.
There will be a welcoming reception and
canapes at 7pm and the Chief Constable
of Norfolk has given special permission
for his mounted police, in ceremonial
dress, to re-enact a centuries old tradition
that is linked to the Knights Hospitallers
and the St John Ambulance Service,
which is unique to Carbrooke Church.

Channel 5 'Circus
Kids' Star Features in
Melsops Pirate Show
The star of Channel five's new documentary 'Circus
Kids' is set to take centre stage this summer in Watton
at Melsop Farm Park.
Fifteen year old Imogen Reynolds will be Performing
her aerial routines every Thursday and Friday In the
all new Swashbuckling Pirate Adventure show being
staged at the Farm park.
It was always Imogen's dream to be an aerial
performer and after years of practice she finally got
her big break last Christmas when she was asked by
local entertainer Alex Morley to appear in his
Christmas show. Alex said ' When I first met Imogen
I knew she had something special and was very
dedicated to her work'
The documentary on Channel Five follows Imogen in
her pursuit to fulfil her dream as she runs away with a
professional circus. She has managed to find time in
her busy touring schedule to appear in the shows at
Melsop.
Imogen said 'Melsop Farm is a special place to me
because it is where I first made my performing debut
and when I had the chance to come back and appear in
the summer shows I simply could not refuse' .
Alex's Pirate show will be appearing at Melsop Farm
park every Thursday and Friday starting from the 27th
July with one show daily at 12.30.
Appearing alongside Imogen will be a whole host of
other performers including acrobats, hula hoop performers, mind blowing magic
illusions and of course hilarious comedy our very own star, Alex himself.
Admission to the shows is free of charge and included within the admission
price of visiting the farm.

about, the friendly faces, happy
chatter and laughter is all part of the

A Quick Look

Well July arrived with the summer still
keeping us nice and warm, with just the
farmers and gardeners having something
to complain about, though their prayers
were eventually answered with a good
downpour, just in time for the Norfolk
Show.
Back in June we had the Queens
Birthday Honours list, but there were so
many names on it that I couldnt be
bothered to wade all through them, but as
I have had nothing in the post, I have the
feeling that I have been overlooked.
Again.
The recent hot weather has persuaded the
Speaker to allow members in the House of
Commons to dispense with ties, which
seems to me to be quite a good idea,
though traditionalists are horrified. But
already leaders in every field are regularly
seen with open-necked shirts, and, surely,
just because Mr. Disraeli would never
have appeared tie-less (or perhaps cravat-
less), is there any reason why MPs should
be constrained by ancient customs and
fashions? After all, we do not expect Her
Majesty the Queen to wear her crown,
except on very special ceremonial
occasions.
Similarly the custom for Judges and
Barristers to wear gowns and wigs, while
adding a measure of dignity to trials, are
merely show boating, and though care
should be taken to avoid any sign of
scruffiness, a more casual dress should be
acceptable.
I found it sad to read that Watton Council
had decided to withdraw any subsidy to
the Community Car service, operated by
volunteers to take people to their doctors
surgeries or to hospital. Yes, Watton has
excellent bus services, but many folks live
some way from the nearest stop, and the
walk from the main stop to the local
surgery is quite long anyway, considering
that most of those needing to attend there
are in poor health and are probably in no
fit state to walk that far, even in fair
weather.
For obvious reasons these patients are
likely to be the older members of the
community, who can ill afford taxi fares,
particularly as cabs do not wait, so that
extra ones have to be ordered for the
return journey, thus doubling the expense.
Many villages operate schemes of varying
sizes, relying on volunteer drivers using
their own cars, with affordable fare
systems subsidized by County and Parish
Councils, and these are seen by all as
among the most valued services of all.
Unfortunately all we seem to hear about
these days is cuts to this, and cuts to that,
and we can only fear how far they will go.
Many feel that savings could be made at
the top, with the main topic being the
rumoured multi-billion pounds exit fee for
leaving the EU. What a strange concept
that is it is usual to pay a joining fee to
get into certain clubs, but certainly not
one to get out !
Even that seems less and less likely, as so
many factions, both in and out of
government, are doing their best to derail
the Brexit negotiations. But we shall see.
Meanwhile the annual football farce is
well under way, with millions of pounds
being bid and accepted for players
moving from club to club, and sometimes
back again, with each payment bringing
the possibility of future financial ruin if
success still is not attained. And to pay
for all this the fan has to fork out anything
up to 75 to see each game. To think it
used to cost just two bob !
But they cheerfully pay out each week,
probably knowing that they should really
be saving to buy a house, but also
knowing that they could never afford one
at todays prices.
At the time of writing this the annual
battles are being waged on the courts at
Wimbledon, and as usual there is a cry
from some observers to abolish the use of
the second serve, which they say is
unfair. In all other sports, they maintain,
no second chances are allowed. Golfers
missing vital putts do not get another go,
nor does the footballer who misses a
penalty, and so on. All very true, but it is
these differences that make activities
attractive, so maybe it is well to let well
alone.
After all tennis has maintained its place as
a popular sport for over a hundred years,
and although minor changes have been
made, it is still basically the same.
Another unique rule that has to be strictly
observed at Wimbledon is the one that
forbids players from receiving any form
of coaching for the duration of a match,
not even an apparently harmless raising of
an eyebrow as a signal of some kind.
This will seem rather odd to golf fans,
who know that even the best player in the
world would not think of taking a shot
without the approval of his caddie, and
that the leading football teams are
constantly given instructions throughout
every match. Of course one wonders why
the best players in the world are not
capable of relying on their own ability,
but there you are.
It appears that spectators too, have to
watch out, for it seems that first-timers at
Wimbledon, particularly those from
foreign parts, indulge freely in the
traditional beverage, the Pimms cocktail,
unaware of its quite high alcohol content.
But perhaps it helps them to fail to notice
the high price of the strawberries!
Now, once again the nights are beginning
to draw in. Not much yet, but we will
soon notice the difference, and it will be
time to dig out those winter woollies. It
happens every year. I blame the
government.

Health Volunteer
Service Grow
An innovative health volunteer service
has been granted a further two years of
funding. It means hundreds of local
people can continue to be supported in
their everyday lives by kind and dedicated
people living in the community.
Voluntary Norfolk has been
commissioned by NHS South Norfolk
Clinical Commissioning Group to provide
a Health Volunteer Service since 2014,
and have recruited more than 240
volunteers over the course of the project.
The renewed service will run to
September 2019.
Health Volunteers offer practical support,
help and guidance for people in South
Norfolk who are recovering from a period
of ill health, or living with a long term
condition. Individuals referred into the
service are matched to an appropriate
volunteer, who meets with them and
decides how they can best support them.
David Smythe, Health Volunteer Service
Coordinator, says Setting someone up
with a volunteer is a big step we know
the skills and personalities of the
volunteers that take part in the service, so
we can facilitate a meeting between the
person needing support and the volunteer
we think would suit them best.
We find out what the person needs, and
how the volunteer can help this can
range from keeping a house and garden
tidy to reduce the chances of someone
tripping over, helping someone with their
shopping, or assisting them in attend
groups or activities they go to.
Reg and Judy are a husband and wife in
South Norfolk who have really benefitted
from the service. Reg has dementia and,
like all carers, Judy sometimes finds it
hard.
But volunteer Eddie has come to the
rescue, via the Voluntary Norfolk service
funded by NHS South Norfolk CCG.
He has befriended them. He pops in
regularly to chat to Reg and often takes
him out on trips, giving Judy much-
needed respite a bit of me-time. pick up a Booking Form at school, from

Coordinator, says: Anyone can contact
the Health Volunteer Service, and GP
Surgeries across South Norfolk have been
actively referring patients that they think
would benefit from volunteer support. In
the past year, over 300 referrals have
come from GPs and health and social care
practitioners into the service.
People receiving help from a volunteer
tell us how valuable they find the service,
and this is mirrored by the experience of
the volunteers themselves.

West Norfolk
Aviation Society
The scheduled guest speaker was unable
to attend the West Norfolk Aviation
Society meeting on Tuesday 4th July and
the duty was thus performed by our own
Club secretary, David Allen. He began
his presentation with a film illustrating
the development and testing of one of his
favourite aircraft, the Handley Page
Herald, which, although a technical
success suffered a production run of only
nine years, mainly the result of political
interference - nothing new there. David
went on to give a masterly account of his
own involvement with the aircraft, from
the hair-raising to the holidays. One
small point: whilst on guard duty one
night he had cause to castigate an
unscheduled intruder who was also
enthusiastic about the Herald; David
grovelled once he realised it was the Duke
of Edinburgh.. runaway.
The evening ended with a rousing
applause and as usual, a special thanks to
our catering hosts, Val and Len, stewards
of the Mundford Bowls Club.

Sing & Celebrate
Young singers are invited to help
Thetford Voices celebrate their tenth
anniversary at Singing Workshops on
Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th August.
Over these two days 6-18 year olds come
together to learn songs and perform them
in concert for friends and family on the
last evening.
Chosen around the theme of Celebration,
songs are targeted to groups within the age
-range so everyone, from beginners to
more experienced singers, can find plenty
to enjoy: big choruses and comedy
numbers, action songs and singing in
parts, all with an upbeat flavour and great
to sing.
As well as a two day course for 6-16 year
olds, we have our Toddlers Hour for 3-5
year olds (at 10.00 on Tuesday 8th) and
for older students 15 and over a mixed
voice Harmony Session from 4.15 - 5.45
that same evening.
The course is based at Thetford Grammar
School and, sponsored by Cynthia Della
Hoys Croxton Charity, Thetford Town
Council and the Chivers Trust, fees remain
at last years low level: 10 for the Main
Course (5 for a single day) and 3 for
Toddlers Hour and the Harmony Session.
Supervision is provided by an experienced
DBS validated team over two friendly
days of good singing.

More Memories
From Bea Goulding (Warner)
Well here I am again following on from last time. I am
now on the north side of the High Street from The zebra
crossing "Going down town" as in "Petula Clarks" song
which to local people is towards the round-a-bout,
starting with the second hand shop on the corner (was a
charity shop ) this was called "BUTCHERS" not the
meat kind but an ironmongers run by Mr. and Mrs.
Ward, the parents of David (re- Regal Cinema). They
sold Gas, Parrafin, Tilley lamps etc. I mention this lamp
as I remember it well, the base filled with paraffin, it had
a mantle which you put a match to, and then there was
light, me waiting for the" Booof" it made (stand well
back) this was then hung from the ceiling.
The mantle had like a hairnet over it, when there was a
hole in it had to be replaced this was very delicate and
sometimes Mum would say a choice word if she
damaged it trying to get it on.
(Ed: For the younger ones, gas mantles were usually sold
as fabric items which, because of impregnation with
metal nitrates, form a rigid but fragile mesh of metal
oxides when heated during initial use. The metal oxides
used produce light from the heat of the flame whenever
used.
According to Wikipedia Thorium dioxide was
commonly a major component; being radioactive it has
led to concerns about the safety of those involved in
manufacturing mantles. They were and still are used in
gas camping lamps as well as oil based lamps like the
well remembered tilly lamp. On first lighting it the
cotton fabric would burn away and then, if heated
sufficiently, the mantle glows very brightly but is
somewhat fragile.)
They also sold fork handles NO I said four candles "The
Two Ronnies" (you got it right) us four girls going up to
bed with candles in a holder, can you imagine it
especially as we were living in a thatched cottage!!
This takes me back to Olive mentioning the rug making.
I too had the job of cutting the strips of material in many
different colours for Mum to make a rug. I have Mums
peg tool and bought a piece of sacking which has sat in a
cupboard for years, well maybe one day. I had forgotten
some folk you talked about Olive, and you brought them
back to life.
I also remember Mum telling me her and Dad did there
courting in Wayland Hall the first cinema in Watton
which reminds me I mentioned Elsie and Dulcie Grey
working at The Regal cinema, Dulcie well it started with
a D. was Derek, Elsie's Husband Sorry I do get side
tracked with my lovely memories, well with technology
I can add and take away so easy.
Back to the shops Adcocks the electrical shop started as
a Jewellers which is where CORALS' is now, and the
two big windows are where Horseburgh the other
Chemist was. Adcocks being a long standing shop
passed down through many generations, (as were many
other shops in the town,) and they have kept up with the
times very much so, even selling organs at one stage. I
mention this as whilst at the Crown, Derek my late
husband played the organ Friday and Saturday nights in
the bar and often popped over to see Michael (Adcock)
to have a tinkle on the latest addition. As you see I
occasionally jump back into the future, well I need to
keep your interest I don't want you
nodding off.
There was a sweet shop which the
Davey family had, was this where
The Digital Phones? their son
always in a white coat, trilby style
hat, and gloves. (Was this the birth
of "Elf and Safety)! they lived
opposite the Wayland Hall, this was
known as Davey Place then .
The store which is now called
LABAS was just a house and the
shop front made later maybe?. Next
door to this was Sharmans an actual
butchers, selling meat, pheasants
and rabbits I seem to recall, or am I
am I just imagining this ? Mr &
Mrs Sharman will pick me up on
this if so, next to this was
Maclarens a drapery store I bought
my nylons from here with a seem
up the back . Ogdens cake shop was
now where Cookies Caf now
trades. Mr & Mrs Ogden made
wonderful cakes especially the
cream horns, and doughnuts.
However, you can still buy a cream
horn as good as " OGGIES" at our
very own Master/Mistress Baker on
the other side of the road called
Bakers Retreat, lovely bread too,
lets support her there's nothing like
the smell of freshly baked bread.
We must support our local shops as
the saying goes " use it or loose it".
At the Iast count there were ten
empty shops in the town " I don't
believe it " quoting a certain Victor
Meldrew. It would be even more
without the charity shops, at this
rate we will soon become a ghost
town like in The Wild West. Lets
keep Watton Alive and Bustling,
we cannot change the past but we
can certainly learn from it, and to
aspire for it to be as successful as in
previous years.
Next was a very big two storey
furniture store called Carters ,
where the Chinese restaurant is
above , no relation to the sweet
shop Carter as far as I know. Then
comes Edwards news agents
recently sold by Chris Edwards in
2016 , his father Ernest known as
Ernie (sorry but I feel a certain song
comes to mind) Ernie went to
school with my mother and I
remember Mum telling me one day
both of them climbing the ladder so
to speak Ernie said to her "only you
and me left now Rosie ". Mum in
her teens worked here over the
xmas period to earn a few extra
pennies, but just before Chris left
the business he arranged a
celebration and I remember
thinking" Oh Mum" you would
have enjoyed talking to Chris of
your memories but she had passed
away two weeks earlier. This
business being in the family for
almost 100 years. In fact I have an interesting book
called KALAMATA BEACH APRIL 1941 the memoirs
of Ernest (Ernie) Edwards from 1940 to 1945 makes for
very interesting reading and makes one realise what
generations before us had to endure.
Next to this shop is the Post Office, which as far as I
know it always has been. Sowerbys property agents and
Watton Goldsmiths was all one property Jack Cross's
cycle shop think his father Arther before him. Which is
where I bought my new bicycle.
The Green Man Hotel where Barclays Bank is now, is
where I had my first wedding reception. At the All
Seasons shop the window to the left was known as
Masons the Jeweller the second window of All Seasons
and Broadside were all part of the house where Mr.
Mason lived (notice the front door still there) . On the
opposite side of the road where all the building is going
on was a lovely house with two big Beech trees, one
either side of the drive a land mark in our town and sad
to see them go. I maybe incorrect but I do remember a
lady who lived in this big house was a Mrs. Mason so
correct me if I am wrong I think she was the Jewellers
wife? this is being made into houses but nice to know its
going to be called "BEECHWOOD". Then we have a
gap where flats have been built between Blaines and All
Seasons and before I comment on what was Blaines
shop I shall have to give this a lot more thought to
hopefully tell you more.

Cat Collars
The safety and security of our pets is always of
paramount importance. Cats should be microchipped as
well as dogs, but wearing a tagged collar lets anyone
know that the cat is owned, and not a stray.
Unfortunately for some cats this can be a very costly
error. More and more frequently the Cats Protection are
receiving reports of cats entangling themselves in their
own collars. Some are getting front legs caught through
unsafe collars when attempting to remove them, usually
because the collar has been incorrectly fitted and come
loose, and if left the cat can become wounded which
then becomes infected. Furthermore when cats are out
and about unsafe collars can become caught or trapped
on fences, gate posts or branches, leaving the cat
incapable of escape, choking and potentially dying.
Nowadays collars come in a range of fashionable
designs and colours, but in reality safety is what should
be paramount. Here are some tips to ensure that the
collar your cat is wearing is safe:
1. Check that your cats collar is fitted correctly. So long
as there is enough give to slide two fingers underneath
the collar, it is not too tight to be uncomfortable, but any
looser and your pet risks becoming a victim of a collar
related injury.
2 Continually check your cats collar, especially with
younger cats, as your pet will grow. Keeping an eye on
the tightness of your cats collar means that it will not
become too small and uncomfortable and your cat will
be less likely to try and remove it.
3. A quick release collar is the best option. These are
collars fitted with a catch that releases when the collar is
pulled on with enough force. This allows your cat to
break free if they become trapped. Best to test these
collars first, as they are built to withstand different levels
of pressure applied to the catch. The best are those which
will withstand a moderate force as any less could end in
your cat constantly losing their collar, and any more
could mean your cat is unable to break free.
4. Check what is attached to your cats collar. Bells and
tags are good for identification and to warn wildlife, but
cats claws can become trapped in the attachment rings. If
you are choosing a collar with a bell or tag, make sure
the groove in the attachment ring is wide to prevent cats
claws from becoming trapped.
5. Avoid collars with elasticated inserts as these are far
more likely to result in cat collar accidents.
6. Avoid using flea collars that can give a bad reaction to
cats. Instead use the veterinary spot on flea products,
which are effective and safe to use.
Cats collars should be used for identification purposes
only. They do not need to wear a collar until they are old
enough to go outside at about 6 months of age. So refrain
from buying kitty a pink and sparkly collar when they
are very young, as the collar will be too large to fit
properly.
While they ensure that if found the cat can be reunited
with its owner, getting your cat microchipped is another
option. It is a simple procedure and the chip stays in your
cat for life. If your cat becomes lost and found by
someone else, they can take the cat to a veterinary
practice or a charity who will be able to scan the chip
with its unique number which is registered to the owner
only. The person with the scanner can then contact the
microchip company and ask them to get in touch with
the owner.

For our June meeting our speaker was Martin Kaye, a
volunteer for East Anglia Air Ambulance who gave us
an in-depth talk about the history of the EAAA. The
EAAA was launched in 2000 and started flying in 2001.
Because one of the first sponsors was the AA whose
logo colour was yellow it was decided the helicopters
would be yellow. The first helicopter flew one day a
week, a Friday, because this was the worst day for road
traffic accidents. This helicopter covered 3 counties. In
2007 a second helicopter was launched. These two
covering 4 counties, and surrounding counties if
necessary, for 365 days a year. Since the launch they
have flown over 2000 missions, one helicopter based in
Norwich and one in Cambridge. Since 2013 they have
been night flying capable with the pilots using night
vision goggles. Martin told us that the helicopters are not
always used for transporting patients to hospital but to
take A&E medical staff to casualties as quickly as
possible. A decision is made on site whether to use an air
ambulance or a land ambulance. A helicopter has the
advantage of being able to go to any hospital but a land
ambulance has to return to its base hospital. Helicopters
can cover approximately 5000 square miles and reach
anywhere within 25 minutes. In 2016 they flew 2361
missions and assisted 1516 patients, mostly cardiac
arrests or road traffic accidents. EAAA also now have 2
rapid response landrovers manned by one paramedic.
These are beneficial when the helicopters are unable to
operate because of poor weather conditions. The service
costs 400000 a month to run, each mission costing
3500. The EAAA gets no government funding and
relies 100% on charity. In 2017 they need to raise 11.2
million to keep the service running. A totally
enlightening talk and enjoyed by everyone.
The speaker for August will be Nikki from Banham Zoo
to give a presentation on Banham Zoo and the work they
do there.

Cressingham on Tuesday 29 August.
A number of members from the Garden Visits group
recently spent an enjoyable afternoon visiting 15 open
gardens in Beachamwell. A very interesting afternoon
with a considerable variety of village gardens to look
round.

Wayland Mens Shed
Well its been a busy few weeks having missed the June
deadline, so I will try to cover all thats been going on in
this edition. As I'm sure many of you have read our
meeting place "The Shed" in Church Walk has been
vandalised on several occasions by some drunken
wonders, our hardy members Brian and Dave made
repairs replacing our drain piping on the building only to
have it totally destroyed again a few days later, this
doesn't include our boundary wall that the culprits are
slowly dismantling!
Now for some good news. Eight of our members visited
Strikes Bowling Alleys in Dereham and a good
afternoon was had by all. with bowling, a drink plus a
bacon buttie all included, another date is being booked.
The Wayland Mens Shed Web site is now nearing
competition and should be up and running in August
together with our own Promotional Video produced by a
local student Mr Elliott Gillespie we are all very much
looking toward to it going on line and YouTube.
With the Wayland Show coming soon on the 6th
August, we will as last year be having our own stand,
four of our members have offered to man the stand with
some of our promotional leaflets and there will be some
items for sale made in our workshop such as Planters and
Bird Tables etc. Lots to see come and visit us.
Talking of Stands we will also be attending the "Military
Vehicle Day" on 9th September at the Church Green, St
Marys Church, Church Rd. Watton. There will be many
Military Vehicles and related items to view just too
much to remember, so come along and have a great day.
Six of our members attended the Duxford Flying
Legends day on 8th July they had a brilliant day and
are still talking about it with many photos on show in
"The Shed".
We now have a regular Pub Lunch event twice a
month when members tryout some of the luvly grub
on offer at different pubs in the area, well worth
joining us for. Then we have Quiz Nite on Friday 28th
July 7pm for 7.30 pm start followed by a Fish & Chip
supper. non-members welcome, why not come and
meet us at Mens Shed and make an evening of it Tea
and Coffee available on tap, you will find us at "The
Shed" Church Walk.

Sightings of Himalayan menace International Summer Festival

sought in Wensum Valley

Thanks to funding from the National Lottery through the

Heritage Lottery Fund, the community volunteering charity
TCV (The Conservation Volunteers) is aiming to tackle a
menace from the Himalayas all along the valley of the River
Wensum and its tributaries. Its not the Yeti thats being
sought, but a damaging invasive weed, Himalayan Balsam.
TCV are asking local people to keep their eyes open for the
plant, which has a flower like a pink policemans helmet, and
can grow over 6 feet tall in a single season. It usually grows
alongside rivers and streams and in other damp areas. It can
smother everything in its path if left unchecked warned TCV
project officer Mark Webster, so we want to pull up as much
of it as possible before it sets seed.
Its a race against time to tackle the plant, as the seeds fire out
explosively from the plant when they are ready they can
shoot out over 5 metres from the parent plant, as well as
floating downstream to contaminate other areas.
TCVs Mid Norfolk Conservation Group are already planning
to pull out Himalayan Balsam from sites including Rush
Meadow in Dereham, Bawdeswell Heath, and Booton
Common near Reepham. These events take place on Fridays
between 11.15am and 2.15pm and local people are being asked
to join in and help removing it. Fortunately it comes up very
easily, said Mark Webster, so almost anyone can make a
really visible difference quite quickly.

July meeting. Her name was Jessica Haw
and she works at the Elsie Bertram Diabetes
Centre at the N & N. Foot care is extremely
important when you are a diabetic, because a
small foot problem can soon turn into a
major foot problem if advice is not sort soon
enough. Poor diabetes control can lead to

performed.
The purpose of all this activity is twofold: the group is out
to entertain, to amuse and to share the joy of performing
with the audiences they meet. The West End Waiters also
raise money for a charity dear to their hearts, that of
Research into Motor Neurone Disease. This is in memory
of John Garratt who used to a Waiter but who died of this
terrible illness in 2014. To date the amount raised is
slightly in excess of 19,000 an achievement of which they
are justly proud.
And of the future? Some may wonder how long the innings
will last. Certainly, ill health has dogged some members
latterly and this is always a concern. However, the spirits
remain willing and for the time being the members of the
group look forward to continuing to don their red, white
and black outfits and entertaining audiences around the
county.

As of July 1st we have a new President. Martin
Parker, who had previously presided in
1988/9, took over from David Branson. The

How delightful 13 guests at our last
meeting and many of that number
registered for membership on that night.
Following the usual notices, we were
treated to an enthralling talk by our
speaker, Geoff Ray (right), of his
memories of entering and completing the
Marathon des Sables 2017 (the toughest
foot race on earth). Geoff as many of
you know is our local Pharmacist from
Total Health in Watton. It was
enlightening as to the many problems he
had to overcome from the initial
preparation and finally the actual
marathon with endurance both of mind
and body. Geoff raised 7500 for Cancer
Research through his exploits and is now
preparing for his next adventure in the
Rain Forest in Costa Rica. The talk was
both informative, funny at times and
amazing at his and the other entrants
achievements. We obviously wish him
Good Luck.
We unfortunately were unplaced with
our two entries at the Royal Norfolk
Show this year so didnt match last
years First Prize but the meeting was
treated to seeing our box of the
Countryside entry during refreshments
and we all thanked those that had
contributed to making it a fantastic

In your garden
with Lotta Potts
Funny month, August. The adverts for back
to school have been plaguing us since the
term ended but its the time when some
people havent even had their holiday yet. For
gardeners it seems to be dusty somehow the
leaves on the trees look a bit jaded and the
garden plants mostly seem to be fading with
some definitely having a last hurrah before
going into a decline. It seems to be all dead-
heading and cutting back as well. All
flowering plants benefit from dead-heading
(even live heading if you grow for the vase)
as this encourages them to have another go at
setting seed.
The ones that flower best this month and go
on until the first frost include hardy fuchsias,
Phlox which doesn't start until well into the
summer and will stand out when most other
perennials are coming to an end. The
phygelius capenensis (Cape figwort) was
introduced a few years ago and looks
remarkably like fuchsia from a distance or
even a very large penstemon. Although very
attractive and comes in many colours it isn't a
herbaceous perennial but a shrub with tender
stems that die down in winter like hardy
fuchsias do but it can go to six feet by two. It
will probably need pruning. The perovskia
(Russian sage) has a cloud of blue flowers on
barely visible silvery stems. The foliage
smells just like our culinary sage but I doubt
its edible. It needs to be planted where other
plants will support it or use twiggy sticks.
Again, this is quite spectacular but a smaller
one has been developed so it might be as well
to look for Little Spire rather than the original
Blue Spire, which Mr T used a lot on Ground
Force. Looked lovely on planting but I
wonder how the owners coped the following
spring. Japanese anemones start flowering in
July and keep going till October. These need
a bit of understanding as they tend to take a
while to settle in. Unfortunately this can mean
you think they've died so get removed. Let
them be but once they like their surroundings
they will become invasive or space-filling
depending on how much room you are
prepared to let them have. They are shallow-
rooted so excess can be removed quite easily.
They have a habit of facing the sun so bear
this in mind when planting.
We can't leave the subject of flowers for
August without mentioning the showstopper

Gardening Club
Peter Beales Roses Twenty-one members
travelled the very short distance to Peter
Beales Roses just outside Attleborough. By
way of a change the proceedings were
initiated by the consumption of tea, coffee
and cakes. Having to tackle refreshments at
the beginning rather than at the end of the
visit did not seem to unsettle the members
in any way.
Our host for the afternoon was Simon
White (pictured below right), a long time
member of the Peter Beales team.
As part of our visit Simon generously
provided a 10% discount voucher on
anything bought that afternoon, and a raffle
with the prize of a rose tree.
Peter has visited us at one of our indoor
meetings at Hockham. At that meeting he
talked about pruning, but on this occasion
he demonstrated propagation. The method
ran something like this. Taking a stem of
the variety you wish to propagate, all the
foliage and thorns are first removed. From
that one stem several buds can be harvested
and then one for each new plant, spliced
into a T cut in the host rootstock. What was
most extraordinary was the size of the bud
used for the graft. It was little more than
the bud itself with the merest sliver of the
soft bark.
Simon also covered the care of roses
including pest control and feeding. One of
the things to avoid is the planting of a rose
where a rose has grown before as this can
lead to something called rose sickness.
The solution to this is to select a cardboard
box, Simon suggested a box of the size that
might hold a dozen bottles of wine, and dig
a hole that will accommodate said box.
Place some well-rotted compost in the hole,
followed by the box, then a proprietary
growing compost, then the rose, as in a
planter. In the time that the box deteriorates
the rose will have established itself and be
dahlias. Classic late summer flowers that
aren't completely hardy. There are so many
varieties, shapes and sizes available that if
you like them theres at least one for you. The
downside earwigs love them. People
decorate their areas with upturned plant pots
filled with straw or newspaper or whatever
trapping material they fancy and put the pots
on sticks. The idea is that you empty the pots
the following day and the one after that and
I'm not sure how you empty a straw-filled pot
that has a population of lively earwigs in it.
Still, I suppose the enthusiastic growers know
exactly how to get rid of them. I do like the
looks of the modern dahlias, particularly the
single-flowered varieties and those developed
from Bishop of Llandaff with dark red leaves
and stems. Then I remember the earwigs.
Just about all the plants that come into their
own in late summer are pretty tough and will
grow in any soil as long as its well-drained in
sun or light shade. Bulbs can be planted now
as well. Not the spring variety but summer-
and autumn-flowering. I suppose the best
known are the colchicums and autumn
crocus. Most people (including me) thought
they are the same but apparently not. Either
way they are very showy and the colchicum
can be put on a window-sill and will grow
and flower. Obviously it has to be planted
after flowering but its rather a neat trick. The
exotics like canna and regal lilies are at their
best now but need lifting before the frosts.
The banana trees that were very fashionable a
few years ago are showing their huge leaves
now but the hardiest, musa basjoo, can be left
out over winter provided it has lots of
protection. The best way is to pack the centre
with bracken or straw, fold over the leaves
and cover the lot with polythene sheeting.
There is a risk of rotting if the leaves are
covered wet but the grower should help with
better advice than I can give. I tried once and
failed, at least partially because the poor thing
didnt have enough room. A frequent mistake
on my part.
If you didnt prune the wisteria last month, it
should be done this. Apparently its
straightforward. All you do is shorten the
whippy new stems to 35cm/6inches. This
stops it going completely mad and promotes
the flowering spurs for next year. At the same
time cut the main stems back to within their
bounds. It is possible to train this vigorous
plant to form a standard, which, if achieved,
would cut down the need to be climbing up
immune to the sick rose condition.
The entire Peter Beales operation requires
the planting of thousands of roses for
selling in the bare root condition. This
could cause the problems mentioned above.
They have an agreement with a local
farmer whereby the roses are grown in his
fields along side the normal crops and
rotated over many years.
Simon then gave us a conduced tour of the
gardens. There are some extraordinary
displays with roses having been established
over many years. Of passing interest were
examples of very fine ironwork supports:
obelisks, arches and the like. It was of
passing interest at the point when their cost
was revealed.
There seemed to be an infinite variety of
roses available. Simon commented on some
peoples insistence on roses with continual
blooming. Would you not have daffodils
because they only bloom once.
Simon finished with a lovely story that
must be true. Some years ago Peter Beales
was given three bonsai trees in recognition
of a favour given. Not being a bonsai
the front of the house or the pergola. I have to
say this looks ambitious to me.
Fruit, apart from harvesting, is another
pruning area for gooseberries (watch out for
those thorns), black currant and red currant
and summer fruiting raspberry canes. These
are a bit more complicated than the autumn-
fruiting varieties. Take out the fruited canes to
the ground and tie in new ones. The autumn
varieties are just cut right down in winter.
Thats it and my kind of pruning. Trained
fruit trees such as cordon apples and fan-
trained stone fruit should be pruned now. It
mainly involves shortening new growth and
removing shoots that have appeared this
season in the wrong place, eg growing
straight out from the main stem.
Much of July was typical English summer
three hot days and a thunderstorm. The hot
days were very hot indeed but once we got a
good downpour and a bit of cool things
seemed to revive. However, August may still
be similar with extra pests so vigilant is the
word. The advantage of hot weather is that
the lawn slows down and doesnt need cutting
so often if at all. On the other hand you may
come home from holiday to a hay meadow.
The only thing to do is start with the mower
blades as high as possible and lower each cut
until the lawn is back to normal. Trim up the
edges as this instantly makes the garden look
a lot better. If you can face it walk round the
whole patch to see what needs immediate
treatment. The weeds will have survived if
not thrived so if theres no time to pull them
out just remove their flowers so they cant set
seed. The stems will look OK until you can
get back to them.
If you grow veg now is the time to enjoy the
harvest and realise that all that back-ache in
the winter was really worth it and of course if
you are really organised you can fill the
spaces caused by the harvesting with
seedlings coming on in pots. If this isnt
possible get out to a garden centre or nursery
as they will probably have winter veg
seedlings for sale. You can also sow seeds of
quick-growing crops such as radish, lettuce
and peas.
Go and see some gardens when you have
time as the ones open to the public have to
keep their displays going all season so there
are tips to be had as to what does well at this
time of year. Many of them sell plants as
well. If the summer keeps going there are
two keeps - watering as well as weeding.

I see no hope for the future of our
people if they are dependent on
technology. None of the children will
grow up never making Tarzan swings
in the woods with their friends,
playing hopscotch or board games....
When I was younger people were
taught to be discreet and respectful of
elders, but the present youth are
exceedingly disrespectful and
impatient of restraint, yet somehow
society has muddled forward. Most
people believe that the past times
were much better than the times now.
20,30, or even 40 years ago you
would see more kids playing, having
fun making things out of boxes,
people had a lot more imagination.
All thats changed now is a change
for the worse. Our generation are
dependent upon the newest app on
their smart phones, and parents would
rather throw an ipad or games console
in front of their children for a bit of
peace. Parents are missing out on so
much time, seeing their children grow
up, playing with them, making an
adventure out of role playing in the
woods; I know I will remember as a
child my mum doing this with me. I
used to pretend I was a princess in the
woods and how me and my mum
would pretend fairys would come
and rescue us.
When you have it all, you are
unwilling to give it up to anyone else,
no matter how unfair it is that you
have it all. People seem to not have a
heart anymore, while poor people are
suffering on the street going days

should be treated as an equal, no one
should be judged on their race or their
sexuality. These are the only few
things from the past that should never
be cast upon as wrong to our time
now, these are the things I would only
want to follow us into the new
generation, but without technology
there would be more communication.

now a day. Our generations are linked
into the internet without real
communication. What people believe
to be true today, it is just all a fake
illusion?.

think most people have forgotten how
to have a real meaningful
conversation with their friends, even
loved ones. It is true that this world is
turning upside down in many ways.
Some topics are more difficult to
discuss, this is why most people will
talk by message on Facebook, but
would they ask you those things in
person? People seem to act
differently over the internet, and
show themselves in a different way in
person right? When we are around
our friends the conversations we have
with them are all about "did you see
that on Facebook" "Do you see who
shes talking to now on Facebook?" is
all questions about someones
Facebook page. You don't see
friendships nowadays asking real life
questions anymore about each other.
People will judge you based on your
Facebook page, and how many likes
and friends you have now.

Hale Garden Club
Dr Ian Bedford, a senior research
entomologist at the John Innes Centre
in Norwich, made a welcome return
for our June meeting to talk, this time,
about 'Butterfly Gardening'.
The butterfly's scientific name is
Lepidoptera, which means 'scaled
wings'; the scales being flattened hairs.
It is sometimes difficult to identify a
moth from a butterfly, especially as
some moths have certain butterfly
characteristics. However, if an insect
has all five of the following - flies in
the daytime, wings are held closed and
upright when at rest, has clubbed
antennae (nodules at the tips), has
colourful wings, has a slim body - it is
certainly a butterfly. They first
appeared 150 million years ago and
have not really changed since. Despite
this, three quarters of the 59 British
species are now declining and their
numbers have halved in the last 40
years. They have always had their
predators (wasps, hornets and spiders),
parasites, fungus and viruses but
nowadays they also face habitat loss,
pesticides and climate change. So what
can we do to help? We can't do
anything about the weather but we can
provide healthy habitats, shelter from

The book discussed on 21st June was The
Cold Earth by Anne Cleeves. It is the 7th in
her Shetland series featuring Inspector
Jimmy Perez. The beginning is dramatic as
it starts with a landslide during a funeral
service. Amongst the debris is the body of
an unknown woman. Seemingly she was
dead before being swept away. There is a
problem with identification, unusual in a
sparsely populated close community.
Apart from one person, who thought it
twaddle, the book was much enjoyed by
the members. One said she had gone off
reading in the short term but this had started
her again and now she is back to enjoying it
and has recently finished severaL books.
Features enjoyed included:memorable, well
defined characters; emotive descriptions of
the background; the ability to hold the plot
and keep the reader guessing until almost
the last page whilst putting ogether a good
story and capturing the readers attention
and imagination. It was agreed that it is
more enjoyable than the televsion series in
which changes in characters etc have not
made for improvement. We all felt that
reading the earlier books in the series might
have been an advantage but in no way did
not having done so detract from the
storms, safe overwintering sites (such
as a pile of logs) and plants for
caterpillars to feed on. Yes, even the
cabbage whites can be satisfied with
nasturtiums if you want to keep them
off the brassicas. Caterpillars also like
ivy, bramble, fescue grasses and
stinging nettles (if you have room for a
decent patch). In addition to buddleia
(commonly known as the butterfly
bush) there are many garden flowers
which will provide butterflies with the
necessary sugar and minerals. In the
spring they will dine on sea thrift,
crocus, hawthorn and cherry. In
summer there are asters, sedum,
lavender, lantana, nepeta and perennial
wallflowers. While verbena
bonariensis and lobelia tupa extend the
flowering season to early autumn.
Most importantly, avoid using
insecticides. Unfortunately, these
poisons do not differentiate between
species and will kill bees and
butterflies in addition to the pests.
This has been a busy month for the
Garden Club. Three days after our
regular meeting we held our annual
flower show. Another great day thanks
to the efforts of numerous members.
Best in Show went to Ian Claydon for
his first ever entry, three beautiful
stems of white delphinium, which he
tells me his wife, Ann, grew from
seed. Well done!

At the July meeting we discussed The Girl
You Left behind By Jojo Moyes. This
begins in France, 1916. Sophie Lefevre
must keep her family safe whilst her artist
husband Edouard fights at the front. Fierce
tensions ensue when she is ordered to serve
the German officers who descend on the
family hotel each evening. The new
Kommandant sees Sophies portrait,
painted by Edouard and becomes obsessed,
which will leads Sophie to make a terrible
decision. Almost a century later, Sophies
portrait hangs in the home of Liv Halston, a
wedding gift from her young husband
before his death. A chance encounter
reveals the paintings true worth, and
troubled history. This history is about to
resurface and upset life for Liv.
The members enjoyed this book, finding it
moving with characters well defined. There
were one or two anomolies such as burying
a grandfather clock then expecting it to
work and disguising a pig as a baby to keep
it from occupying Germans ,unless they
had no sense of smell. Setting it in two
different time slots was cleverly executed.
This was our annual teaparty with
donations for Assert the charity for the
genetic disorder Angelman Syndrome with
which the grandaughter of a member has
been diagnosed. Many thanks to the host
and those who donated generously.

Meeting
Watton Society had its first summer outing
with a visit to the 20 Church Wardens pub at
Cockley Cley for lunch, Excellent meal.
Then a visit to Gooderstone Water Gardens
thoroughly enjoyed by all, sunshine all the
way. No meeting in August - but back at the
Watton Community Centre. High Street.

Planning for an
Enchanted carnival
Preparations are underway for this years Watton
Carnival, which will take place on Sunday 3rd
September with the venue being Watton High
Street with free admission.
This years theme is Enchanted leaving lots of
scope for your imaginations to run riot and come
up with some amazing costumes.
Keeping with tradition we will once again be
opening the carnival at 11.00am with a special
open-air morning service led by Watton
Pentecostal Church. Followed at 11.45 with the
official opening ceremony by the Town Mayor
Stan Hebborn.
The parade commences at 1.00pm led by The
Phoenix Pipes & Drums- your local Watton based
pipe band followed by the Princesses and Princes,
all local children from the Wayland area, keep a
close lookout for Hareton our mascot, whom I
am sure will be making an appearance this year.
There will be live music and entertainment on
stage throughout the course of the day and back by
popular demand Badge the good time rock and
roll band who will have you rocking in the streets.
Also featuring Invidia Voices a rock and soul choir
along with dance groups from the Full Fitness
Gym, plus lots, lot more.
Thanks to the support of Watton Town Council,
we will once again be able to provide a free
attraction for the younger generation. If you would

The July Winner of the 100 Club Draw
Royal British Legion
The members of the Watton and District Branch of
The Royal British Legion have been busy over the
last few weeks. One of our members went back to
Normandy for the D-Day celebrations, as reported
in last months paper. Two of our members are
undergoing training to be our standard bearers. A
quiz was held to raise funds for The Poppy Appeal
and the local branch. Thanks to everyone who
attended as we raised over 500. Another went to
The National Memorial Arboretum to attend the
100 year celebration of Woman at War. We have
had our usual meetings and lunch club. To say we
have been busy is quite an understatement.
Our members went to lunch with Norfolk County
Chairman John Boisson at The Waggon and
Horses. This lunch was fairly well attended with
some new and some old faces. Not everyone can
go out on the same day of the week so we try to
vary the day so that anyone who has a prior
commitment can join in. Our County Chairman
was very impressed with how friendly our
members were and said he looked forward to an
invite to another lunch later in the year.
The branch is starting look a lot healthier but we
still need new members especially from the
younger members of the community. Over the last
few months a few newcomers have swelled our
ranks by the grand total of 4. They have been
fantastic in coming forward to help our branch
keep going. That said we desperately need a new
Treasurer, ours is retiring due to health. So we are
calling anyone who has a savvy head on their
shoulders (you dont need to be a financial whiz)
to come forward and join us with a view to
keeping us on the straight and narrow with our
finances. If we do not get one and none of the
present members take up the reins then the branch
cannot legally continue. There is the
misconception that you have to have served in the
armed forces to join. That has not been true for
about the last 20 years!
Another popular misconception is that The Royal
British Legion is only here to help any members or
ex-members of the armed forces community and
their dependants from the first or second world
wars. This is not true as The Legion is here to help

branch members are undergoing training to
undertake training to be available to pop in for a
chat or talk on the phone to anyone who needs a
friend. In this way our local branch is here to

Plans are continuing apace for the Wayland
Players next production. In a new departure for
the Players, 'THAT' S ENTERTAINMENT' will
showcase the musical talents of some of the
members as well as their comic and dramatic
abilities. There'll be songs from the musicals of
both sides of the Atlantic, comic sketches, poems
and wonderful guitar solos.
Dates for this extravaganza are Friday 17th
November and Saturday 18th November when
there will be both a matinee and an evening

St Botolph's Church Coffee Morning, held on Saturday 1st July
at the Queens HAll Watton. The PCC would like to thank those
that supported the morning for their generosity. Due to the fact
that the Craft Fair was cancelled there was little support from
Watton. However the event did raise 247-90 so our thanks go to
the few supporters. We thank David and Jenny Simons, Evelyn
Batts and Bryan Leonard for their help enabelling us to raise the
above mentioned for our Phase Two refurbishment fund.

Ladies Section at Richmond Park Golf Club

It is with great pride that we are able to
announce that the Wayland Partnership
Development Trust Growing Together
Project, was awarded highly commended
in the Parish and Town Council Category at
these prestigious awards in Norwich on 19th
July. The Saham Toney initiative at the
Community Centre has achieved amazing
things in the last twelve months. Bird boxes,
bug hotels, a wildflower meadow, and the
planting of a magnificent native British
Hedge.
Thanks must go to the Parish Council and the
many local volunteers for their enthusiasm
and commitment. Full story next month
The Ladies of Richmond Park have
had a busy summer of golf especially
playing the Ladies Championship over
36 holes on 25th/26th June. The Ladies
Champion and winner of the Alison
Sheard Cup was Sandy McCormack
with two magnificent rounds of 89 and
81 respectively. This earned Sandy a
cut in handicap from 15 to 12, well
done to her. Sandy was also the winner
of the Handicap Trophy.
Also played was the Diana Davies
Cup, an 18 hole scratch competition
for ladies in Division Two. This was
won by Rosie Sutterby with a score of

On Monday 10th July, it was Windfall
Trophy day, an 18 hole Stableford
competition. Everyone looks forward
to this event and this year it was played
in perfect weather and with the course
in wonderful condition. After the golf
the ladies changed into their summer
finery and enjoyed a delicious buffet
lunch before the presentation of the
prizes.
The Winner of The Windfall Trophy
this year was Anne Bell with a score of
35 points. In 2nd place was Margaret
Middleton with 34 points and in 3rd
place was Margaret Broadbent with 33
points. The trophy was presented to
Anne Bell by former ladies captain,
Elaine Aberdeen Pictured lower right.
Phew! What a Scorcher!
Following a week of very high
temperatures in June, the ladies of
Watton Inner Wheel were actually
relieved to find the day of their
annual Strawberry Tea dawned
warm, sunny and with just the right
amount of breeze to enable everyone
to enjoy the event, once more held in
the garden of Ken and Brenda Davis.
The gazebos still had to be erected to
protect from the sun and most of the
stalls to be located outside under the
trees to keep cool.
We were delighted to welcome about
one hundred people to enjoy
strawberries and cream, delicious
homemade shortbread and cakes with
as many cups of tea as were
requested. After tea there was time to
wander lazily round the garden or to
buy from the usual cake and
preserves stall, a large array of books
or some of the attractive goods on
offer. There were a few games to
have guess at too.
Brenda and Ken are always happy
that people enjoy their garden at this
event and even more happy that this
year, with the very kind support of
everyone who came, that the splendid
sum of 927.50 will be sent to
Marys Meals. This year the event
was to raise funds for our
International Charity of choice,
Marys Meals. Two of their
Community Ambassadors, Mr Julian
Wang and his wife Gloria attended
and were able to explain that the
charity was set up following the
founders visit to Malawi in 2002
when he met a mother dying from
Aids and her young son told him that
his dream was to have enough food to
eat and to go to school one day. From
the small beginning of feeding 200
children in Malawi Marys Meals
now reach more than one million
children in fourteen countries, giving
them a nourishing meal at school.
It is still a sobering thought that there
are still so many more across the
world that need the same help, both
to eat and to get an education and
that it costs just 13 . 90 to feed a
child for the entire school year.
We were also delighted to welcome
Watton Mayor, Councillor Stan
Hebborn and his lady, and a friend
and fellow piper. They were pleased
to entertain with a number of tunes
and then to join us as we celebrated a
special birthday with one of the
Clubs Founder Members. Mrs Gill
Upton is ninety in a few days time
and our President Heather Hewson
took the opportunity to present her
with a beautiful basket of flowers
from the club and everyone present
joined in to sing Happy Birthday.

in June when the Club Outing visits
Aldeburgh and Southwold in Suffolk
and members will enjoy fish and
chips on the beach in Dunwich. What
could be better!

Bowls Club
The Nowak Trophy this year was hosted by
Connaught Bowls Club at Attleborough.
Joe Nowak escaped from Poland at the
outbreak of the Second World War and
made his way to England. Upon later
settling in Watton he joined with Harvey
Day to form the building firm of Day &
Nowak. Although Joe did not play bowls
(he was a vice president of Watton B C) he
was well respected and in his generosity he
set up a bowls competition match between
local clubs for the benefit of a local charity.
On this occasion the choice was The
Norfolk Zipper Club which supports
Papworth hospital. Connaught were the
worthy winners with 18 points from a
possible 24. Mundford, Swaffham and
Watton were the other clubs involved. The
photograph shows David Flatt, Connaught
captain, receiving the trophy cup from
Zipper chairman Bob Spinks. John Winup,
Connaught president also in attendance.
Over 400 was raised for the charity.
In the Age Concern League playing away at
Diss District, Carol Relf, Brian Cubby and
Kevin Simpson lost 13-17. Margaret
Bowdidge, Richard Relf and John Seage
lost 10-25. Result 0-6 and 23-42 on shots.
This was followed by a 6-0 home win
against Diss Causeway. Carol Relf, John
Seage and Kevin Abbott 16-10. Gordon
Stanbridge, Jim Adams and Graham
Vellam 14-10, and 30-20 on shots. Then
away at Shropham Green a 0-6 defeat 21-44
shots Gordon Stanbridge, Sandy and
Graham Vellam 11-18. Carol Relf, Pat Prior
and Kevin Simpson 10-26.
There were two close fought matches in the
Ashill & District league. At home to
Connaught Ash, Margaret Bowdidge,
Richard Relf and Charles Newman lost 8-
18. Sandy Vellam, John Walkling and
Kevin Simpson won 20-13. Pat and Ted
Prior and Dick Mikulik drew 11-11. Result
3-5 and 39-42 on shots. A trip to Connaught

So, another busy few months at the Caston
Ju Jitsu & Martial arts club - can't believe
we are nearly halfway through 2017
already!
January saw our Ishin Ryu Ju Jitsu club
celebrate its 27th year with our annual
anniversary dinner celebrated in style in
Borehamwood with our clubs attending
from across the UK.
This month the teenagers from across
Elm had a repeat 3-5 defeat with the shots
equal on 47-47. John Hunter, Sonia and
Richard Exley won 17-12. Carol Relf, Alan
Hubble and Kevin Simpson 15-18. Pat and
Ted Prior with Dick Mikulik 15-17.
Results have consistently gone against the
Watton players in the EBA this season.
Away to Dereham St Nicholas, Jim Adams,
David Violet, Peter Myhill and Graham
Vellam won 22-17. Malcolm Hamilton,
Brian Ledbetter, Mike Mitchell and Kevin
Wilson 11-26. John Seage, Richard Relf,
Charles Newman, and John Hunter 15-22.
Result 1-4, and 48-65 on shots. Then in a
rearranged match at home to Thetford John
Seage, John Walkling, Charles Newman
and Graham Vellam won 20-16. Jim
Adams, Brian Ledbetter, David Violet and
Kevin Wilson 22-23 Malcolm Hamilton,
Len Green, Mike Mitchell and John Hunter
12-22. Result 1-4, and 54-61 on shots. The
journey to Thetford found the home team in
top form with a fine 5-0 win and 29-85 on
shots. Two further home matches did not
produce any points despite some good
bowling against Shipdham 0-5 and 35-83
shots, and Aldiss Park 0-5 and 43-62 shots.
In a friendly match at Swaffham Clive
Harris, Malcolm Hamilton and Philip
Lapworth lost 8-18. Margaret Bowdidge,
Richard Relf and Dick Mikulik 13-23. Pat
Norfolk have participated in their summer
gradings, which as usual was a morning of
emotion for everyone involved. The
children all passed with flying colours and
celebrated their success with lunch locally at
the Waggon and Horses as always.
Soon it will be the turn of Ishin Ryu's adults,
no doubt this will also be a day of blood
sweat and tears, followed by the usual fine
food courtesy of Scott at the Waggon and
horses.
Once again Ishin Ryu pulled out all the
stops for the Children's Championships
which took place in Newmarket in May, an
absolute success with many happy Caston. Well done to all those who took
participants going home with medals, part. Sheila Herbert, Childrens Coach
including many form our club here in
Prior, Jim Adams and Kevin Simpson 18-
12. Peter Hodsdon, Brian Ledbetter and
John Hunter 15-15 Result on shots 54-68.
Another annual friendly at Cromer resulted
in wins for Sandy Vellam, John Seage and
Mike Mitchell 14-13, and Richard Relf,
John Walkling and Graham Vellam 14-13.
The match on shots was 84-61 to the home
team.
The Club Motorhome enjoyed a few days at
the Sports Centre during June, which
included a friendly game of bowls. 18 of
their members took part with Watton
players which concluded with target bowls.
Richard Ross their organiser is planning to
visit again next year.
The winners of this years Club Triples
were Sandy Vellam, Brian Ledbetter and
Peter Myhill. They were unbeaten in their
three games with two wins and a draw.
