Name:______________________________
Q1.
A cellular radio system based on GSM900 has radio base station (RBS) antenna gain of 10 dB
at a height 30 m above the ground and mobile station (MS) antenna gain of 2 dB at a height of
1.5 m above the ground. The RBS transmitted power is 10 W and the distance between RBS
and MS is 20 km.
(i) Determine the receive signal in dBm if the plane earth path propagation exist and the
medium loss of 30 dB.
h h
Pr = Pt + Gt + G r + 20 log t 2r medium loss = 40 + 10 + 2 138.98 30 = 116.98 dBm [4 mark ]
d

(ii) Using Okumura model, predicts the received signal (in dBm) at MS located in suburban
area.

FSL = 32.44+20log20+20log900=117.54 dB (1 mark)

Amu(900MHz, 20km) = 32 dB (0.5 mark)
GA (suburban area) = 9.5 dB ( 0.5 mark)
G(ht) = 20 log 30/200 = -16.48 (0.5 mark)
G(hr) = 10 log 1.5/3 = - 3.01 (0.5 mark)
L50 = FSL + Amu G(ht) G(hr) GA = 159.53 dB (1 mark)
Pr = Pt +Gt + Gr - L50 = 10 + 10 + 2 159.53 = - 137.53 dB = -107.53 dBm (1 mark)

(iii) Repeat Q1(ii) but using Hata model.

a(hr ) = (1.1 log f c 0.7 )hr (1.56 log f c 0.8)dB

a(hr) = 0.016 dB (1 mark)

L50 (urban )(dB ) = 69.55 + 26.16 log f c 13.82 log ht a(hr ) + (44.9 6.55 log ht ) log d

L50(urban) = 172.23 dB (1 mark)

L50 ( Suburban) ( dB ) = L50 ( urban ) 2 log ( f c / 28 ) 5.4
2

L50(suburban) = 162.29 dB (1 mark)

Pr = 40 dBm + 10 + 2 162.29 = - 110.29dBm (1 mark)

(iv) From Q1(ii), calculate the carrier to noise ratio (C/N) if MS has a 5 dB noise figure and
bandwidth of 200 kHz and determine whether the MS can be used at a distance of 20 km
from RBS.
Noise Floor/Level = 10 log (kTB) + NF = -150.97+5= -145.97 dB= - 115.97 dBm
[1 mark]
C/N = -107.53 (-115.97) = 8.44 dB [1 mark]
Since C/N < 11 dB (digital), MS cannot be used. [1 mark]

Q2.(a) Figure Q2 shows the discrete power delay profile for multipath environment.
Calculate,
(i) rms delay spread
(ii) coherence bandwidth for frequency correlation function above 50%.
(iii)What would happen if a GSM signal (BWsignal = 200 kHz) is transmitted through this
channel?
(iv) determine the maximum bit rate that can be sent through the channel without needing
an equalizer if binary BPSK modulation is used.

(i) mean excess delay = 1.28 S (1 marks); mean square delay = 2.107 x 10-12 S2 (1 marks)
rms delay spread = 0.68 S (2 marks)
(ii) Coherence BW = 292 kHz (2 marks)
(iii) Since Bs (200kHz) < Bc (292 kHz), the received signal is not severely distorted
Flat Fading, since Bs < Bc (2 mark)

(b)
Fading: rapid fluctuations of the amplitude of a radio signal over a short period of time or
travel distance. [1 mark]
(i) Multipath propagations: multiple waves arriving at random delay, angle and amplitudes.
[1 mark]
(ii) Speed of mobile (Doppler shift): Frequency shift caused by the motion of MS.
