Installing Applications and using Administrative Credentials on Akamai Windows 7 Images

Background:

Windows 7 changes the way authentication works by default compared to prior versions of the windows
operating systems. Weve also added a third party product to assist in presenting installation and
administrative options in a cohesive interface.

As such, installing or launching an application which requires some type of elevated permission set will
often prompt for your Akamai credentials. This should be considered normal, and while an initial
system setup may result in multiple prompts for many applications, this should quickly wind down so
that very few are presented.

We also have quite a few applications known to be used frequently, or that we supply on the system,
available in our internal software portal. These applications will not prompt at all during installation
when installed from the portal, unless more information is required of the application itself.

The next few pages will go through the elevation options present on a windows 7 system from most
common, to rarest. There are five options detailed for authentication.

Elevation Mechanisms and Prompts
For any authentication prompt, the name of the program, publisher information and path to whats
running can be found above the user prompt dialog fields as seen in the pictures inserted.

1. Basic Elevation: Double Click a file and run it (single click if someone has that turned on for
execution).

1.1 Double click any executable you want

to install, or launch which requires
admin rights.
1.2 Type your Akamai Domain
Credentials/Akamai Network Login
Password into the password field and
click Authorize.

2. Path Elevation: Using C:\MyInstalls on your local system

2.1 Drop an executable or msi file into

C:\MyInstalls and run it. This path allows for
automatic elevation and will not need a
prompt for anything you launch from here.
The program should run as expected with the
elevation needed.
3. Intentional Elevation: Right click on an exe or msi file to intentionally run it with elevation.

3.1 Right click on the executable

youd like to launch and choose the
Akamai Admin Elevated Run option.

3.2 Type your Akamai Domain

Credentials/Akamai Network Login
Password into the password field and
click Authorize. The program should
run as expected with the elevation
needed.
4. Elevate a command prompt and run the target by typing the path:

4.1 Type cmd into the

windows start search field and the
cmd program, or the Command
Prompt, will show up in the
response results under Programs.

4.2 Right click on the cmd

program and choose the Akamai
Admin Elevated Run option.

4.3 Type your Akamai Domain

Credentials/Akamai Network
Login Password into the password
field and click Authorize. A
command shell window will open,
as shown here.

4.4 Type the path to the file youd like to run at the command prompt. The program should run as
expected with the elevation needed.
5. Install through Windows UAC Prompts: (requires user to be a local admin on the system)

5.1 Right click on the executable youd

like to launch and choose the Run as
Administrator option.

5.2 Choose the option, I want to

complete this action by entering my
credentials on the authentic Windows Logon
screen.

5.3 Type Control+Alt+Delete to enter

your credentials on the secure logon screen.
Note that if youre using a remote Virtual
Machine, Control+Alt+End will be the needed
key combination.

5.4 Type your Akamai Domain

Credentials/Akamai Network Login Password
into the password field and click Authorize.
The program should run as expected with the
elevation needed.
