Round Table Essay

Gun control is a very strong topic that has been a problem for a very long time. The

government finds ways to try to change things around but there is no guarantee that things will

stay the same forever. With there being a different president elected, there can be any changes

made by the president whenever requested. When Obama was president he was able to make

changes to the legislation and he did. Obama used the power that he had while president to keep

the United States protected by any danger that could be done to the society. For many people,

gun control is a way of protecting themselves. For other people, gun control is a way of showing

others that they are cool and are wealthy enough to own a gun.

The speakers in this round table essay are Police Officials, Government, and Civilians.

The Government tries to make it possible for people to be safe in society by making sure that

firearm buyers are able to provide background checks when purchasing a firearm. The

government does not think that there is a problem with firearms being owned, but the problem is

who owns the gun and what those peoples backgrounds look like. In February, a survey

demonstrated that in rural areas, there are less people who know of any victims of gun violence.

There was a 10-year ban on assault weapons set by the congress that sets the weapons to expire.

The District of Columbias strict guns laws was also abolished by the House Of Representatives.

Police Officials are the main people that carry their firearms around to protect

civilians. According to research, when the officials were younger, they were exposed to many

firearms while growing up. This caused them to want to own firearms in the future and

succeeding to achieve their goal. It was not such a great idea for officers to grow up the way they

did. Police officers are seen as bad guys because of the damage caused in the incidents of police

brutality. Plenty of these incidents may have been an accident, but when it happens more than

once, civilians do not see the cases as an accident anymore and officials are blamed for the

tragedies and say that they were done on purpose. Not all officers are with gun control. There are

plenty of officers that actually rejected gun control and there are others that do not support all of

gun control but only specific gun control.

As a civilian, I think that we are the main victims when it comes to firearm dangers like

robberies, home invasions, getting arrested, kidnappings, threats and more dangerous tragedies

that are bound to happen. Police brutality has occurred to civilians and there is rarely any cases

on a police accidentally shooting another police officer. People have all types of consequences

wanting the police officers to have for the damage that they have caused, sadly we have very

little power to be able to make big changes like the officials do. Research says that about fifty-

four percent of general public agrees that stricter gun laws would decrease the amount of mass

shootings that occur in the community and environment.
