Cohesive patterns of The Uses of Discourse Analysis in Society and Paint the Titanic

The analysis of the text The Uses of Discourse Analysis in Society and
Paint the Titanic shows similarities in the cohesive patterns found in the text and
major difference in the order in which they appear. The texts coincide in the use of
five cohesive ties such as reiteration, temporal, nominal substitution, nominal
reference, causal and adversative conjunctions but differer in including
demonstrative reference, comparative, and coordinating conjunctions. This patterns
are found at different parts of the texts in different order however, some of the
words used in the text are the same and in some paragraphs are located after a
semicolon, as in most paragraphs of the first text, or at the beginning of a new
paragrapgh as in the case of the second text.
The use of these cohesive ties in the texts is influenced by external factors such
as the topic, the audience and the purpose of each text. For example, the text The
Uses of Discourse Analysis in Society deals with Discourse analysis as a new
discipline, how language is use in society, who the scholars of this discipline and
they are going to study, therefore this text requiered the use of 9 cohesive ties in
order to refer different subjects in the text. Only two of these cohesive ties are te
most commonly used in the text which are addversative conjunctions and
coordinating conjuntions with a different purpose : to show the other aspects of
discourse analysis in society and to connect or add information about the topic.
Even though there are some patterns that these texts share with each other, they
differ in the use of them and how they can be distinguish. For example, the use of
adversative conjunctions in the first text fullfils the purpose of showing the
different implications fo studying discourse analysis in context, who is going to
analize the use of the language in society and what part of the language is going to
be analized. While the second text uses adversative conjunctions to show the countr
parts of the painting project.
The influence of the genre of the text in the cohesive ties used in the second
text is limited due to the fact that the topic is very simple and does not requeire
simplification of the content to make it comprehensible. Yet, the most common
patterns found in the text are reiteration, and nominal substitution. Both patterns
are use to in different ways, for example, reiteration is used in order to state what
the different persons involved in this project said about it, for which the words he
said are constantly use at the end of paragrapghs and nominal substitution in the
noun Titanic ( in the text refered to as ship or wreck ) or project ( constantly named
as plan or the plan ).
The use of cohesive ties in both texts gives them the connection they need
to be comprehensible or otherwise the utterances in the texts would be read as
isolated and the topic could not be understood. Therefore, the function of cohesive
ties in these texts is to make their content less dense yet, there are other purposes of
the use of cohesive ties in both of them. For example, in The Uses of Discourse
Analysis in Society, it is observed the constant use of adversative conjunctions with
the purpose of showing different aspects of the study of discourse analysis in
society. While in the second text there is a constant reiteration to what the
authorities involved in the painting project said.
To conclude, the patterns used in these texts are used as resources to unite
the information in the written form and at the same time to clarify the information
about their respective topics but there is also another use that can be suggested. The
way in which they are used at specific places of the paragraphs as after a period as
in the case of adversative conjunctions to explain to the reader the counter parts of
their findings in order to keep the text coherent and cohesive.
