Multimedia

1.) Research about multimedia.

Multimedia can have a many definitions these include:

Multimedia means that computer information can be represented through audio,

video, and animation in addition to traditional media (i.e., text, graphics drawings,
images).

A good general definition is:

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text,

graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other
media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and
processed digitally.

A Multimedia Application is an Application which uses a collection of multiple

media sources e.g. text, graphics, images, sound/audio, animation and/or video.

Hypermedia can be considered as one of the multimedia applications.

2.) Research about the advantages and disadvantages of using multimedia.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Multimedia:

ADVANTAGES

Creativity- It brings more life to discussions.

Variety - It caters all types of learners.
Cost-effective - Multimedia mostly requires only a one-time purchase of devices
and software, which can be used unlimited times thereafter.
Evaluation - It offers ideal learning assessment tools which are also entertaining
for the students.
Realistic Approach - It provides approaches which make learning more realistic.
Wide Variety of Support - Multiple media formats are available for use, with
different models being able to create multimedia.
Trendy The current trend of culture leans toward technology, and a great
number of resources are being made available for different media formats.
DISADVANTAGES

Accessibility - Multimedia requires electricity to be operated, which may not be

available in some rural areas or may not be consistently available due to
shortages and blackouts.
Distracting - Multimedia may take away the focus from the lesson due to its
attention-grabbing formats.
Costly - Production of multimedia is more expensive than others because it is
made up of more than one medium. Production of multimedia requires an
electronic device, which may be relatively expensive. Multimedia requires
electricity to run, which adds to the cost of its use.
Time Consuming - Creating multimedia requires more time.
Requires Mastery - Multimedia requires consistent and long practice to master,
which may take a lot of time and energy from the user.
Limited Support/Compatibility - There is a wide variety of gadget models which
arouses incompatibilities of media formats.
Fragile - The device used for multimedia must be used with care; exposure to
moisture or other elements could cause expensive, irreparable damage which
would require another purchase of a device.

3.) Research about Uses of Multimedia in Teaching.

Uses of Multimedia in Teaching are:

Personalized Learning using Multimedia Resources:

Multimedia resources help different learners meet their learning needs. As we

know, different students have different learning styles, educators can easily
provide them with suitable learning resources using multimedia. Educators use
YouTube to provide visual learners with online videos, podcasts for auditory
learners and interactive games for tactile learners. Multimedia resources make
everything easy for students to learn in their comfortable learning style. Unlike
traditional approaches, in which only the teachers used to lead the entire
classroom delivering long lectures at the same pace, the use of multimedia
results in personalization of learning.

Group Learning:

Multimedia tools such as blogs, social networks and wikis enable students to
work together in learning a particular concept. Students use these to share their
works with others, give feedbacks on others works and discuss among others a
particular topic. It can be done through either blogging or micro blogging
(Tweets). Using these multimedia tools, educators can engage students in
several works and watch them collaborating with each other, peer assessing
each others works and learning as a group.

Improve Presentation skills:

Using storyboarding, videos and slideshows is a great way to improve student

learning, because it allows them to engage with text in a very visual way aided by
multimedia. Multimedia tools enable students to express their ideas and works in
concise ways that capture the attention of the audience and they develop an
ability to communicate thoughts and concepts through a variety of resources,
including text and recorded narrations.

Giving students a wider choice of software and tools to present their work is an
effective approach as it allows learners to decide on the style of presentation that
best suits their personality. This is also a way to allow the learners to engage in
their education in a more personalized way and also improve their creativity,
critical thinking and reflective thoughts.
