1.1 STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES)

BACKGROUND

Student industrial work experience scheme background In the earlier stage of

science and technology education in Nigeria, students were graduating from
their respective institutions without any technical knowledge or working
experience. It in this view that students undergoing science and technology
related courses in institution were mandated to undergo SIWES, in view of
widening their experience so as to enable them have technical knowledge or
working experience before graduating from their various institutions.

The student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was established by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to enable students to tertiary institution and have
technical knowledge of industrial work base on their course of study before the
completion of the program in their respective institutions. The scheme was
designed to expose students to industrial environment and enable them develop,
occupational competences so that they can readily contribute their quota to
national economic and technological development after graduation. the major
benefit accruing students who participate conscientiously in student industrial
training experience scheme(SIWS) are the skill and their competencies they
acquired.

1.2 OBJECTIVES

The industrial Training Fund Policy state the following:

1. To provide an avenue for student in higher institutions of learning to

acquire Industrial skill and experiment during their course of study

2. To prepare students for industrial work situations that they are likely to
meet up after graduation

3. To also expose student to methods and techniques in handing equipment

and machinery that may not be available in their institutions.

4. To make the transition from school to the world of work easier and
enhance students contacts for later job placement.

1.3 BODIES INVOVED IN THE MANAGEMENT

The bodies involved are: The Federal Government and the Industrial Training
Fund (ITF) and some supervising agent. The functions of their agencies above
include to:

1 To ensure adequate funding of scheme

2 Establish SIWES and accredit SIWES unit in the approved institution

3 To Supervise student at their palaces of attachment and sign their log

book and

4 Checks and process students log-book and forward to ITF area office

2.1 BACKGROUD OF THE ESTABLISHMENT

Express multimedia began operation in June 2011 from its corporate office at no
3 Adenekan street, Okota, Isolo.

Founded by journalism master, Mike Awoyinfa and late Dimgba Igwe of the sun
Newspaper frame, it took off with its first week publication, entertainment
express on July 1, 2011.

The paper became popular and circulated across major city in Nigeria. The
success witness led to establishment of Sunday Express in December 2012.

At the moment, organization operates daily on digital platforms as an online

publication via www.expressng.com where it now reaches audio within and
outside Nigeria.

Publication of news involves the using of entertainment dash box, we also make

The emir of kano, Malam Lamido Sanusi was a successful banker and former Governor of the Central

 CHAPTER FOUR

4.1 CHANLLENGES

I was face with series of challenges in the organization. My first month at the
department was somehow, I had problems relating with the staffs at the
department because being a non-staff some activities are made unknown to me.

Also it was hard for me to type perfectly and some things on the
computer which I suppose to know but as time goes on I was able to catch up,
type and work perfectly on the things given to me to work on with the help of
the staff before the end of the first month I was really mixed up with them all.
With this I was able to solve the entire problem by composing myself, building
up courage, perservance and commitment to the job and overall a God fearing

Attitude.

4.2 CONCLUSION

The period of my student industrial work experience scheme (SIWES) was

really intensive and challenging. During my listed period of training, I acquired
a lot of knowledge and new skill part of which are listed below.

1. I learnt how to relate in any industrial environment I found myself.

2. I learnt how to relate with everybody around me, both old and young for
better understanding.

3. I was able to practicalize the knowledge acquired in school and Equip them
fit into the labor market.

4. I meet new people with different professional Idea.

5. I have tasted a bit of the task and challenges ahead of me in terms associated
with this noble profession in respect of profession in and

Practices.

4.3 RECOMMENDATION

Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a very good programmed which

has helped me learn and become a more experience personnel in my field of
study and I therefore recommend that every Student should pass through this
process to enhance their Study and to prepare them for higher task ahead in life.
