Introduction of Reliability Engineering

Theories & Basic Concepts

Question 1:
Define Reliability and list down key variables for reliability.

Question 2:
Determine the objectives of Reliability Engineering.

Question 3:
Differentiate between Qualitative Reliability and Quantitative Reliability?

Question 4:
With an aid of diagram, explain bathtub hazard rate concept.

Question 5:
Give definition of MTBF and MTTF?

Statistical Reliability

Question 6:
A color TV tube is designed to have an operational life of 10,000 hours. After-sale data shows that 3% of
the tubes were burnt out within the first 1000 hours; 6.5% were burnt out within 2000 hours. Write the
informations given in reliability function terms.

Question 7:
i) The occurrence of X does not depend on the occurrence of Y, or vice versa, X and Y are said to be
mutually independent. What is the probability function of X and Y occur?

Question 8:
Suppose that P{X}=0.32, P{Y}=0.44 and P{XY}=0.58. Answer the following questions with proof:

(a) Are X and Y mutually exclusive?

(b) Are X and Y independent events?
(c) What is the value of P{X/Y}?
(d) What is the value of P{Y/X}?

Question 9:
Table below shows results of a survey of workers in a branch of the chemical industry
Num of workers
Contracted Have not Total
cancer contracted cancer
Exposed to chemical 220 135 355
Not exposed to chemical 48 597 645
Total 268 732 1000
Determine the probability that a worker in this industry will contract cancer given
he/she was exposed to the chemical.

Question 10:
A natural gas compressor has a constant hazard rate of 0.00034 failures per operating hour. Find

a) The mean time to failure

b) What is the reliability over a 30-day period
c) What is the time when reliability is 0.95

Question 11:
Values of X are given as (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) and the associated pmf are f(0)=0, f(1)=1/16, f(2)=1/4, f(3)=3/8,
f(4)=1/4 and f(5)=1/16. Compute the mean, variance and standard deviation for X.

Question 12:
The failure rate of an offshore equipment is 0.005 failures per hour, and its times to failure is defined by
the following function:

where t=time and f(t) is the failure rate density function. Calculate the probability that the equipment
will fail during a 40-hour mission.
