Xsens MvN
the animators tool
Xsens MVN is a flexible, camera-less full-body human motion
capture solution. This portable system can be used indoors
and outdoors. The results of an MVN mocap session needs
minimal fine-tuning as there is no occlusion or lost markers.
MVN is a cost efficient Mocap system based on state-of-the-art miniature inertial
sensors, biomechanical models and sensor fusion algorithms. MVN is created by
Xsens, a leading expert in inertial sensor technology.
The Xsens MVN system was a phenomenal resource for us to get motion capture into Resistance 3 faster
than weve been able to in previous titles
Kevin Grow, Cinematics Director at Insomniac Games

MVN uses a 23 segment biomechanical model Double integration of body segment accelerations
with 22 joints. allows for jumping/running.
Each joint is specified by statistical (permanent floor contact is not needed)
parameters for 6DOF joint laxity. ~2% error in traveled distance
An advanced spine and shoulder model Advanced external contact model detects
is used that computes the kinematics of body world contacts to enable crawling, sitting,
the spine and shoulder blades. cartwheels etc.
Full control over external contact points
System calibration
Flexible calibration scheme with instant Props

Local, permanent disturbances

Advanced calibration High degree of immunity, performance will depend on
10 - 30 seconds per additional step motion and environment.
Advanced subject specific calibration determines
tracker alignment and/or subject specific dimensions.
Soft tissue artifacts
