Abstract

Biomedical engineering is one of the most prominent and rapidly develop-

ing engineering fields. It is a discipline that is involved in the development
of devices, algorithms, processes, procedures and systems to enhance and
improve the medical field. Biomedical engineering has multiple areas of
specialization that include: biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineer-
ing, imaging, and bioinstrumentation. This textbook serves as a guide to
students and professionals seeking to understand commonly used tech-
nical terms and phrases in the biomedical engineering field. The content
is specifically designed to define technical terms in a general context to
facilitate an overall understanding. The book begins by translating terms
in English to Arabic then Arabic to English. It can be used as a tool in
the academic or professional environment for both English speaking and
non-English speaking individuals alike.

I would like to thank Professor Francis (Jerry) Hopcroft for introducing

me to the concept of this textbook. Without his assistance, this book would
not have been possible. I would also like to thank Dr. Joseph Martel-Foley
for reviewing the textbook definitions and providing input and Waheda

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Since the emergence of the Biomedical Engineering field many terms are
often used in the classroom and medical device industry. International
students may need a guide to facilitate the language barriers needed to
succeed in both professional settings.
This book is designed to provide students with a tool to understand some
of the most common terms used in the biomedical engineering field. Since
Biomedical Engineering is a large discipline that relies on anatomy, phys-
iology, chemistry, biology, and engineering, this book focuses on general
terminology. Some of the definitions in this textbook are given from a
broad perspective and can be further investigated to provide detailed and
deeper conceptual meaning.
