SACRAMENT OF HOLY
ORDER
INTRODUCTION

Holy Order is a sacrament through which

the mission of Christ to his apostles
continues to be exercised in the Church
until the end of time.
Holy Order the sacrament of apostolic
ministry.
ETYMOLOGY OF TERM

a) Ordo (Latin)-- It is an established body.

b) Ordination It is a process by which an individual
is incorpored into an ordo or
established body.
a) Order in the church simply means the group of
those who carry on certain function such as
teaching, sanctifying and governing.
Ordination is the sacramental act by which one is
integrated into the orders of bishops, of priests and of
deacons.
It goes beyond a simple designation, delegation or
institution by the community since it confers a gift of
the Holy Spirit, enabling the exercise of a sacred
power, which can only come from Christ Himself,
through his church.
Old Testament
God called all the Israelites through Moses to
be a kingdom of priests, a holy nation.
He chose the tribe of Aaron to be in-charge of
the priestly ministry and to be assisted by the
tribe of Levi.
The Levites are the modern day sacristans.
New Testament
Like Jewish synagogues, early Christian
congregations were organized under the
leadership of elders called presbyteroi
(presbyters) see Acts 14.23.
The terms elders and bishop are interchangeable
(see Titus 1:5-9).
Although rarely mentioned in the bible, Deacons
were associated with bishops See Philippians
1:1; 1 Timothy 3:8-13.
SACRED SCRIPTURES

Acts 14:23
In the early Church they appointed
elders, and with prayers and fasting they
commended them to the Lord, in whom
they had put their trust.
FOUR BASIC ROLES OF THE PRIEST IN
CHRISTIAN MINISTRY

1. The priest is a Disciple, called to follow Christ in total

commitment.
2. The priest is an Apostle, sent to serve in the mission
of Jesus and of the Church.
3. The priest is a Presbyter, an elder one responsible
of the pastoral care of the Church members.
4. The priest is a Presider at the Eucharist. He offers the
holy sacrifice of the Mass in persona Christi.

SACRED SCRIPTURES
1 Timothy 3:8-13
Church helpers must also have a good character and
be sincere; they must not drink too much wine or be
greedy for money: they should not hold to the revealed
truth of the faith with a clear conscience. They should
be tested first, and then, if they pass the test, they are
to serve. Their wives also must not gossip; they must
have only one wife, and be able to manage his children
and family well. Those helpers who do their work well
win for themselves a good standing and are able to
speak boldly about their faith in Jesus Christ.
HISTORY OF HOLY ORDERS
The New Testament show a variety of leadership in the
Early Church:
A. Bishops overseer or supervise the church who is
the center of unity in the community.
B. Presbyters or Priests help/assist the bishops in
their mission.
C. Deacons serve in the Holy Eucharist.
DEGREES OF HOLY ORDERS
BISHOPS comes the word episkopoi which
means to overseer ==Episcopacy
PRIEST comes the word presbyteroi which
means elders or presbyters ==Presbyterate
DEACON comes the word Diakonoiwhich
means servers.
BRIEF HISTORY OF HOLY ORDERS
The 5th century saw a new way of looking at
ordination rites. It possesses a sacramental
character that a priest or bishop will be servant
of God forever.
In the middle ages, the order of deaconate
became a step towards ordination to the
priesthood.
MINOR ORDERS OF DIACONATE:
A. Porters= who gathered together all communities
B. Lectors= who read the Word of God
C. Exorcists= who assisted the priest in the
catechumenate
D. Acolytes= who were servers in the mass.
Today on B and D remain and it is performed by the
laity.
GRADES BY WHICH ONE ASCENDS
TO PRIESTHOOD
1. TONSURE, or the clipping of the hair by the bishop, by
which the candidate for priesthood dedicates himself to the
service of the altar.
2. The four minor orders by which he is permitted to perform
certain duties that laymen should not perform.
3. Sub-deaconship, by which he takes upon himself the
obligation of leading a life of perpetual chastity, and of
saying daily the divine office.
4. Deaconship, by which he receives power to preach, baptize,
and give Holy Communion.
