LESSON PLAN

Form : 4 Gigih
Number of pupils : 30 students
Date : 7 April 2011
Day : Thursday
Duration : 7.40 9.00 am (80 minutes)
Subject : Mathematics
Topic : Statistics III
Subtopic : 6.3 Histograms with class intervals of the same size.
6.4 Frequency polygons.

Learning Objectives
Students will be taught to:
1. Represent and interpret data in histograms with class intervals of the same size to solve
problems.
2. Represent and interpret data in frequency polygons to solve problems

Learning outcomes
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Draw a histogram based on the frequency table of a grouped data.
2. Interpret information from a given histogram.
3. Solve problems involving histograms.
4. Draw the frequency polygon based on:
a) a histogram,
b) a frequency table.
5. Interpret information from a given frequency polygon.
6. Solve problems involving frequency polygon.

Teaching and learning approaches

Cooperative, mastery and inquiry learning

1
Background knowledge
1. Students have learnt to complete the class interval for a set of data given one of the class
intervals.
2. Student have known to determine
(a) the upper limit and lower limit,
(b) the upper boundary and lower boundary
of a class in a grouped data.
3. Students have learnt to calculate the size of a class interval.
4. Students have learnt to determine the class interval, given a set of data and the number of
classes.
5. Students have learnt to determine a suitable class interval for a given set of data.
6. Students have learnt to construct a frequency table for a given set of data.
7. Students have learnt to determine the modal class from the frequency table of grouped
data.
8. Students have learnt to calculate the midpoint of a class.
9. Students have learnt to verify the formula for the mean of grouped data.
10. Students have learnt to calculate the mean from the frequency table of grouped data.
11. Students have learnt to discuss the effect of the size of class interval on the accuracy of
the mean for a specific set of grouped data.
