Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS)

What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) is a
proactive approach to establishing the behavioral
support, social culture, and needs for all students.
PBIS is a strategy that helps all students achieve social,
emotional, and academic success.
Attention is focused on creating and sustaining primary (school-wide), secondary (classroom_,
and tertiary (individual) systems of support that improve the lifestyle of students.
PBIS strives to make misbehavior less effective and influential and desired behavior more
functional.

Characteristics of PBIS:
Encourages positive behavior
Strives to prevent negative behavior (focus is not on punishment)
Guides students behavior, social life, and academics towards achievement
Unique to the schools needs
Should identify and describe clear expectations
Describes how students should behavior in specific settings
Multi-tiered system of instruction and support
Teaches appropriate school expectations
Effective and purposeful
