result of thousands of dollars worth of
donated manpower and materials that
cut the upwards-of-$100,000 cost to
nearly half.
Volunteers were praised at a barbe-

Alberta-Saskatchewan-based company
Legacy Fire Protection, which saved the
non-profit society $9,000 in installa-
tion, consulting and engineering plans,
and using their connections to reduce
the final cost of a sprinkler system and
a fire suppression system to $60,000.

ple who are centred on certain core
values and they wanted to be a part of
it, said Carl Pollard, owner of Legacy
Fire Protection.
With homelessness, there are a lot
of varying reasons. There are vulner-
able people in society and they need
community support. I think were for-
tunate that were in the industry that
we are and have an opportunity to
provide for our families. Whether you
want to acknowledge it or not, theyre
in your community, so turning a blind
eye doesnt solve the problem.
Due to space limitations, Pollard had
to turn more volunteers away but said
he had a large number of workers ea-
ger to help on the project.
The requirement of a sprinkler sys-
tem threw a wrench into the initial
plans of Strathmores first ever over-
night shelter a result of changes to
the Alberta Fire Code that were imple-
mented in 2014, a year after the Har-
vest Healing Centre Church was con-
structed.

bers, volunteers and a board which is

The foundation and core values of
the Rockyford Rodeo have remained
the same for the past 60 years: a trib-
ute to western culture and a respect for
horsemanship and the cowboy way of
life.
The Rockyford Rodeo has been built
into the legacy of the small village and
it shows no signs of stopping.
This year, like so many past years, at-
tendees were able to watch boys steer
riding, steer wrestling, team roping,
bareback, senior barrels, pee wee barrel
racing and junior barrels, saddle bronc,
calf roping, bull riding and novice bull

New to the rodeo this year, as a spe-
cial 60th anniversary event, was bull-
fighting with Gringo Bulls the only
purebred Mexican fighting bulls in
Western Canada. Several bullfighters
tested their bullfighting skills by dodg-
ing bulls and showing off a few moves
while competing to win payouts add-
ing up to $2,000.
We thought for our 60th we would
bring something a little more exciting
in and draw in a few more fans, said
Justin Geeraert, president of the Rocky-
ford Rodeo and of the Rockyford Lions
Club a major sponsor of the week-
end.
Weekend coordinators took a differ-
ent approach in advertising the rodeo
Finals in all rodeo events were held
on Sunday.
All the proceeds go to the Lions Club
and from there we disperse them out.
We put money into our campground,
and into local community organiza-
tions like the hall and ag society, said
Geeraert. The club also donated to the
Wheatland and Area Hospice Society
last year.
The weekend not only celebrates the
history of western culture and rodeo,
but it is also a major revenue stream for
many local businesses.
Everyone, every local business, ben-
efits from the rodeo every year. The
amount of dollars it brings into the
community is huge for a small town
like Rockyford, said Geeraert, who
added that the weekends events are 80
per cent volunteer run.

Seniors Drop-in Centre The Happy Gang has moved while enhancements to the
for August. Lambert Centre are completed. The Centre has relocated to the Strathmore Legion as
of August 1st. All regular programming will continue with minor adjustments. When
construction is completed at the Lambert Centre, the Happy Gang will move back into
the improved space.
Family Centre Upgrades - As part of the Canada 150 celebrations the Town of
Strathmore was awarded a federal grant of $450,000 from Western Economic
Diversification Canada 150 Infrastructure Program to rebuild the ice plant. The
project includes a rebuild of the refrigeration plant for the twin arena to improve
operational efficiency. The facility remains open, but all ice sports are unavailable. All
programming will resume mid-September.
Community Pavilion - Kinsmen Park will see some enhancements to the area along with
a new Community Pavilion which will be constructed near the North area of the Park
thanks to generous donations and support of the community. The North parking lot on
the East half of the Park is temporarily closed during construction of the Pavilion and
other enhancements.

There are numerous facility upgrades and enhancements happening in Strathmore this
summer. They are all part of the capital improvements the Town is undertaking during
Canadas celebratory year.
The work is planned over the next few months and like a house renovation, there is a
lot going on and it may get messy at times with extra construction around town.
Some of the rooms under renovation include the Aquatic Centre, the Family Centre,
Lambert Centre (including the Library, FCSS Offices and Senior Drop In/Happy Gang
Centre), Kinsmen Park including the addition of a community Pavilion, Grays Park,
Town pathways, an area within the Downtown core and the Town Offices.
The goals are to work safely and efficiently to complete the projects with as little
disruption as possible and to keep residents and visitors informed throughout the
construction.

The proposed walkway, or multi-use multi-pur-
pose pathway, is part of Strathmores Canada 150
Spanish projects and will join more than 50 kilometres of

paved loops at Kinsmen Park and near the wet-
lands at Grays Park, located on the east side of
Wheatland Trail.
As access to the towns water transmission line
for maintenance and servicing was needed, an
approximate 1.65-metre-wide pathway compared
to a 2.5-metre-road was proposed to provide for
the maintenance of valves and access to the infra-
structure in case of an emergency.
The project will run over top and directly adja-
cent to the current water transmission line. The
areas environment will not be interrupted as the
registered easement is considered disturbed land,
with assessments completed several years ago.
I dont want to call it a roadway, but at the end
of the day we need a road in there to service our
infrastructure but I want to be as least intrusive
as possible while still accomplishing the needs of
the servicing and maintenance of the transmission
line, said Trent West, head of Strathmores emer-
gency support services. West previously served as
director of operations on the urban parks system
project in the City of Leduc, and held the position
of chair of parks and open space services for three
years.
Birds are nesting through that area, along the
shoreline and taller grass, but all of the goslings
have been born and so theyre on the water or on
the shorelines. Were paying very close attention
but its already disturbed soil and already different
types of vegetative grass that you can see.
The town allocated $100,000 through their Bor-

in a small critter such as a library mouse with
the name displayed on its shirt. Overall, the library
hopes to raise $60,000 with the mural alone.

brary space, the mural will also include three or
four painted windows with different sceneries
that are always available as sponsorship oppor-
tunities. Furthermore, the library has seven areas
that can also be sponsored as well as sections
within those areas: the childrens area, the teen-
agers area, the art gallery, the fireplace, the water
bottle filling station, the small meeting room and
the large meeting room.
The library has also enlisted Marlene Risdon as
fundraising coordinator, who with years of fun-
draising experience and having grown up in the
area understands the importance of the librarys
presence in the community.
We wanted something thats different than
bricks on a wall; this is a library so lets do the
books, sponsor a spine, Risdon said. There are
so many different projects with the library now. A
lot of people dont realize that. The library is not
just about books any longer.
Having sold 53 boxes of Fantasy Mini Donuts
in the past, the initiative is being reintroduced
for a second time with orders being taken be-
tween Aug. 3 and Aug. 24. Individuals can visit
the booth at the Strathmore Stampede, where a
raffle will also be set up with prizes, including a
quilt and pieces of art a partnership with the
Strathmore Municipal Library and Wheatland So-
ciety of Arts. Despite a proposed date at the end
of October to open the librarys doors at the Lam-
bert Centre, Erison stated that fundraising efforts
will be ongoing.

According to the Park and Pathways Bylaw No.
14-07, a pathway is considered a multi-purpose
thoroughfare controlled by the town and con-
structed for the use of pedestrians, cyclists and
persons using wheeled conveyances, and is im-
proved by concrete, brick, asphalt or other sur-
faces.
Theres lots of moving parts and we know we
have this much money, we know where we want
to start, but we have no idea how far were going
to get with that money, said West. What I want
to do is build to a standard so that we can start
interconnecting other pathway systems that exist,
whether its gravel, asphalt, elevated boardwalk,
bridge, whatever it might be so that we can call
what we have an urban parks system. This is a
small piece of a bigger picture and hence why we
want to work to build it to pathway standards.
Mayor Michael Ell, whos been an advocate for
pathways in Strathmore, said he is aware of en-
dangered species in the area, especially during
migration. He feels the pathway will add to tour-
ism.
I do not want to see a road through there, that
will in my opinion, damage it in the future, just
a pathway so that the people can enjoy it, said
Ell. There arent too many communities that will
have a wildlife area in their centre. It will allow
people from surrounding communities to come
out and enjoy a nice quiet place.
The pathway is going to be partially constructed
at the southwest side of Grays Park and finished
off with a feature piece, such as a bench. Eventu-
ally the pathway will connect to Thomas Drive.
Moving forward, West is looking for some
quotes on materials and for sponsorships to com-
plete the project over the next few years.
Construction on the Grays Park pathway proj-
ect is set to start this month.

Closest Battle of the Bands yet

The third week of Battle of the
Bands was a nail-biter with only one
point separating the winning bands
from the competition.
The hard rock band The Fatal Pur-
suit narrowly edged out alternative
rock group Marwood Way and the
dedicated Ecila on July 27 at Legends.
Im really glad Im not the judge,
said Canada 150 Committee vice-chair
Stacy Devine, who is one of the mas-
terminds behind Battle of the Bands.
All three bands were so great and
thats kind of been my thoughts every
night.
The Fatal Pursuit was first to per-
form and put forth a strong effort to
interact with the crowd. Lead guitar-
ist Shayne Dunbar shredded mul-
tiple guitar solos throughout the set.
Lead singer Dylan Lock would put his
hands over Dunbars guitar acting as
though it was on fire.
We dont really think about it too
much, we just kind of get into the mu-
sic, said Lock. Were all up there to
have a good time and we love it when
the crowd joins too, so it just kind of
comes out.
According to their Facebook page,
the Calgary-based band has been to-
gether since 2015. They write all their
own music and released their album
Sinful in March. They are hoping the
Battle of the Bands can help their mu-
sic reach a wider audience.
Our goal is to start expanding out-
side of Calgary, said Lock.
Marwood Way was the second band
to perform and featured the largest
cast of the competition so far with five
members. They played a much larger
range of songs than the competition
by adding in some slower songs and
then speeding it up for the next one.
The alternative rock band has only
been together for eight months. Un-
like most bands, none of the members
knew each other before they started
playing together.
I didnt know any of these guys
before we started playing, said lead
singer Jordan Cote. Were just lucky
none of them are jerks and theyre
nice guys and we get along really
well.
Ecila was the final band to perform
and suffered the most heartbreak, as
they drove all the way from Saska-
toon on the day of the competition.
Like The Fatal Pursuit, they saw Battle
of the Bands as an opportunity to get
their names out there.

The festival (Canada 150 Music Fes-
tival) seemed like a big opportunity
for us as a band, said guitarist Josh
Cross.
Five months ago, the rock band add-
ed bass player Mitch Davis and Aiden
Russel on drums to round out their
roster, as Ecila used to consist of only
two members: Cross and lead singer
and guitarist Janaye Floyd. According
to Cross, it was tough to come so far
and lose by such a close margin.
The scoring was decided upon by
four judges looking at four different
categories: originality, skill, stage per-
formance and audience interaction.
Each section is given a score on a scale
of one to 10. The final scores arent re-
leased, but at the competition it was
revealed that a single point separated

Wheatland to receive additional voting stations

As part of the provincial Local Au-
thorities Election Act, Wheatland Coun-
ty passed a bylaw during the July 18
regular council meeting that allows for
additional voting stations to be set up
in each division for the 2017 general
election in Wheatland County.
The general municipal election ad-
vance polls for electors will be held on
Oct. 13 at the Wheatland County office.
The municipal election will take
place on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
at various polling stations throughout
the county.

ing an appeal of a hefty and unexpect-
ed water bill issued to the Golden Hills
School Division (GHSD).
The valve of a domestic water line in-
side a school was opened and left on

drain.
At the time of the presentation, it
was unclear if the valve was opened
on purpose and forgotten about, or if
a maintenance issue occurred, leaving
the valve to be unknowingly opened.
The bill for the maintenance issue
came to approximately $22,000 and
raised questions about how often water
meters are read.
Alan Parkin, Wheatland Countys
chief administrative officer, told coun-
cil that meter lines are checked every
two months.
This is not the first time a request to
void a bill that was created due to an is-
sue with continuous water leakage has
been brought up at council. Two other
recent occasions were accounted for
during the meeting. Those bills were
noted to be approximately $500 and
$1,000 each.
Its an issue that happened inter-
nally; county normally has not paid for
those issues. Its not up to the county
to go walk around the buildings, its up
to (building owners) to maintain their
buildings and make sure the waters
running, said Councillor Alice Booth.
I have sympathy for them it isnt
done deliberately, but the reality is ev-
erybody is responsible for their own
maintenance, not the county.

no motion to reduce or void the water
bill.

the company philosophies is to keep
things locally sourced. Geeraert plans
on reaching out to Strathmore food sup-

to offer food to customers.
Its great that were expanding our
commercial and industrial base, and
the owners are local and they are using
local farmers and grains in production
which is fantastic, said Chuck Procter,
an urban planner with the town. As a
young person in this town, its always
great to have another venue to go to.

The rodeo gods smiled and de-
livered perfect weather for the
60th anniversary of the Rockyford
Lions Agriculture Society rodeo.
The three-day rodeo took place
July 28-30, featuring plenty of lo-
cal talent from Wheatland County.
A parade took place through
downtown Rockyford, looping
the town twice before the rodeo
got underway.
A total of 23 contestants from
Wheatland County, including sev-
en Rockyford riders, took part in
the rodeo.
Strathmores Bevin Brown was
the big winner on the local front.
He rode Fresh Brewed on July 30
during the bareback competition.
His score of 70.0 captured first
place.
Another local, Riley Sibbet,
took home fifth place in the boys
steer riding for his ride of 70.5

I felt real good out there, she
bucked pretty good, said the
15-year-old Sibbet. She came out
pretty straight then bucked to the
right. My feet came back but I
kicked back even more and put
my feet in front of the rope.
Sibbet comes from a rodeo fam-
ily. His sister, Paige, competed in
the junior barrel racing.
Even though he has been riding
steers for seven years, the rush of
the crowd is something that never
gets old.
The fans were great, he said.
There was a lot of pressure out
there competing close to home,
but it probably wont come close
to comparing to what the crowd
will be like next weekend at the
Strathmore Stampede.
What made the Rockyford Ro-
deo such a special event was that
for a lot of the contestants, it was
their first rodeo. Anytime you can
strap on the boots in front of a
crowd of more than 400 people,
the rush can mask any minor in-
juries sustained while riding the
livestock.
Competing against Riley was
Rockyfords George Kalbhen.
Kalbhen rode to a 65.5 in his
first rodeo, which could be the
start of a long and promising
rodeo career especially if you
look at his bloodlines.
Kalbhens family was in the
stands, watching the 14-year-old
ride his first steer. The rodeo
runs strong in his family as his
uncle is Canadian bull riding leg-
end, Scott Schiffner.
He told me to keep my shoul-
der blades pinched back and
buck at the top of his head, said
Kalbhen. And to hold on as long
as I can.
Kalbhen has been competing
in mini bull riding competitions,
but decided it was time to take
his game to the steers.
Not bad, for a first-timer.
The rodeo contained several
events geared towards the next
generations of cowboys and cow-
girls.
There was junior and peewee
barrel racing, mutton busting
(sheep riding), a miniature wild
horse race, novice horse riding
and a catch-and-keep contest,
where kids under the age of sev-
en flooded the rodeo arena in a
giant mob, trying to catch a few
piglets and chickens.
One of the veterans of the ro-
deo was barrel racer Lynn McGo-
nigle of Strathmore.
She raced out to a time of
16.909 July 29 with her new
horse, Whiz.
He got a little spooked at the
beginning of the run from the
crowd and I wasnt expecting
that. I was pretty happy with the
way our race turned out, said
McGonigle, who had previously
competed in at least 15 Rocky-
ford Rodeos.
I consider this to be my home-
town rodeo since I just stick to
the semi-pro rodeos and will not
be at the Strathmore Stampede. It
was great to see the huge crowd
and support from all the fans and
sponsors.
For local rodeo fans, the scene
now shifts to the Strathmore and
District Agricultural Society ro-
deo grounds Aug. 4, when the
Strathmore Stampede finally gets
underway. The rodeo starts at
1 p.m. Aug. 4-6. The rodeo will
start at 4 p.m. on Aug 7.

donation by Grays Limited.
It was an amazing night to have everyone come
together for the ballpark, said Reds head coach Ja-
son Tanton. It was a cool moment to share with the
boys and the community.
Its nice to see games being played here instead
of us just working on it every day.
Darren Cockx, assistant coach with the Reds and
past president of the Cheadle Lions Club, asked
around and thought it would be an excellent idea
to dedicate the new ballpark in honour of Ray Fair.
Fair was a member of the Cheadle Lions Club
for more than 30 years and an active baseball fan,
coaching, playing and umpiring teams in the com-
munity for decades.
Rays sudden passing left a void in our organi-
zation. He was an avid baseball player and mentor
who was still playing at 68 years old, said Tanya
Molnar, who was sponsored by Fair when she first
joined the Lions Club. His passion for the game was
obvious to anyone who played with or against him.
He will always be remembered as a tremendous as-
set to whatever team he was a part of.
With the addition of a bright new scoreboard
hanging above the left field wall, the only thing still
missing from the ballpark was a sign, letting people
know that this was Fair Field.
With everyone gathered around the home plate
bleachers, Fairs widow, Marilyn, and her son Kevin
unveiled the sign for all to see.
I was sort of overcome when we took the cover
off I was very proud, said Marilyn. It was very
amazing, I didnt expect the plaque, it was really
something to see the many people who came out to
see this and support the team.
The cast iron sign stands roughly seven feet tall
and contains a message about Rays passion for
baseball and the Lions Club on the back.
I saw the preview of the sign, so I knew what it
was going to look like, said Tanton. But then to see
it now, I was simply amazed. It looks great.

Riders prove themselves at national horse show

The Calgary Regional Appaloosa Club youth team cleaned
up at the Canadian National Appaloosa Show (CNAS) in Bran-
don, Man. July 25 to 29, bringing in 10 first-place ribbons.
The club sent six riders from the Wheatland County area
to the event.
Im proud of them all, said coach Jessica Tyrell. They all
showed great determination.
The event featured multiple events and challenges for the
team, including barrel racing, poles, western pleasure and
horse maintenance.
Helen Tyrell, 11, won numerous ribbons and she picked up
the CNAS youth sportsmanship award.
All the other people in the show voted for
somebody, said Jessica. The winner happened to
be on our team so its pretty exciting.
For Lauryn Schimke, 17, the competition pre-
sented new challenges.
I think adjusting to the type of competition
we werent really used to that style, that intensity,
said Schimke, who added that the heat and humid-
ity provided an extra battle for the team.
Both Schimke and Helen captured multiple rib-
bons over numerous events including flags, stakes
and English.
When the team wasnt competing they were tak-
ing care of the horses, grooming them and prepar-
ing the animals for the show. The riders get graded
on their costumes and how well the horses are
taken care of.
The club is taking as much time to rest from the
five-day marathon that is the National Show before
heading to Drumheller to compete this weekend.
However, the team is already looking to next years
show.
We are thinking about teaming up with the
Manitoba team (next year), said Helen.

This is a generation where
ways to communicate has
never been so accessible. It is
incredible to know that you can
do a lot of your business on a
small little phone. Machines
and computers seem to do
everything. You rarely have to
talk to a human or do you?
I mean, when you call a number
and get a machine voice that
says, push 1 for this, 2 for that,
etc. How do you feel? After a
while, I know I just want to talk
to a human. I want to be able to
explain my situation to someone
who is really listening, not
wait for some computer voice.
The computer doesnt fully
understand what I want. I get
frustrated.
Despite all our amazing
methods of communication,
it seems it has become more
of a problem between people
than ever. Relationships fall
apart largely due to the lack

The provincials were held in Strathmore two years ago,
and according to a few of the athletes, is the main reason
they got involved and have stayed involved throughout the
This summer, the provincials will be held in Calgary Aug.
10-12, with the locations scattered around the city. Strath-
more will still retain the slo-pitch tournament at the Strath-
more and District Agricultural Society ball diamonds.
The provincials, which have been held for 20 years, fea-
tures seven outdoor sports: cycling, golf, horseshoes, pick-
leball, slo-pitch, tennis, and track and field. There will also
be four inside sports: five-pin bowling, badminton, hockey
and swimming.
Lyaltas Max Huntley will be competing in slo-pitch, while
Strathmore will be represented by Helen and Pius Sauver-
wald in bowling, Susan Lust and Stephen Wiewel in swim-
ming, and Vikki Hanson, Marianne Pinchbeck, Pete Greene
and Joss Binns in golf.
Three of those Strathmore athletes will be looking to
duplicate their provincial winning performances from two
years ago.
I have been competitive swimming all my life. It wasnt
until the games came to Strathmore in 2015 that I began
picking up the sport again, said Lust. The games are a great
way to get people moving and active again in a competitive
atmosphere.
Lust picked up three silver medals in 2015, taking second
in the 50-metre freestyle, 100m free and 50m backstroke.
The only stroke I like is the freestyle. I remember I en-
tered the backstroke because I had never raced like that be-
fore, said Lust, who has been living in Strathmore for more
than 35 years.
Lust turns 70 in January and still trains three times a week

peting in the 65 to 69 age group, where
she is excited to break her own records.
The only competition Wiewel grew
up racing against was the current.
Growing up on the banks of the
Winnipeg River, Wiewel occasionally
hopped in for a swim as a kid, but he
never got involved with competitive
swimming.
Like Lust, he got involved with the
games once hearing they were coming
to Strathmore.
Remarkably, Wiewel swept the podi-
um in all four races he entered in 2015
the 50m and the 100m free and back.
I never competed in anything like
that before, said Wiewel. It was a lot
of fun to participate and race against
other swimmers.
Repeating such a dominant per-
formance might be tough to pull off.
Wiewel believes his haul in 2015 was
partially due to competing in a young-
er group. Now that he has moved up
to the 60 to 65 age group, he believes
there will be more retired athletes,
deepening the pool of talent, making it
hard to repeat.
We will see about the medal count
this time, said Wiewel. Im mostly just
going out to participate and be a part
of the games.
Like any major sporting event, there
will be an opening ceremony that takes
place Aug. 10 at the Thorncliffe Green-
view Community Association.
Zone 2, is Binns, who serves as the ac-
tivity director, coordinating qualifying
rounds for different sports.
Binns was up a silver medal during
the 2013 games at the Barrhead Golf
Club, and bronze in 2011 at the Fair-
view Golf Club.
This year, the golf will take place at
the Fox Hollow Golf Course, where
Binns will look to knock off the two-
time provincial champion.
There is a guy from Edmonton who
has won this event two times in a row,
said Binns. He is an elite level senior
golfer and he wins these events fairly
easily.
Whether Strathmore brings home any
hardware from this years event wont
matter. For everyone involved, it is the
healthy competition that gets them out
of bed and training for the event.

Bantam Reds look for repeat

Winning a provincial title is noth-
ing new for the bantam Reds baseball
team, having already accomplished the
feat three times at different levels.
This weekend, the team looks to pull
off a franchise first to capture the pro-
vincial title on home soil.
The Reds won Tier I provincials last
year and advanced to the Western Ca-
nadian championship, where they took
home a silver.
Now, they look to repeat as champs
on a freshly minted ball field.
Were excited to have the chance to
play here and host provincials, said
Reds assistant coach Rick Zarowny. We
are going to need a little bit of luck,
get some good pitching, but it would
be awesome to win it here at the field.
The Reds have played six games on
the new Fair Field in Cheadle, going 4-2
in the new digs following their split se-
ries against the Red Deer Braves July 30
at Fair Field.
Its a good feeling knowing that you
are able to win at home, said Reds
head coach Jason Tanton. We have a
lot of work ahead of us, we are going to
be playing some teams that can really
pound the ball.
Baseball Alberta awarded the provin-
cial location to the town of Cheadle af-
ter the league caught wind about the
stunning beauty of the new ballpark.
The Reds (15-2) get underway Aug.
4, 3 p.m., when they host the Sylvan
Lake Heat (13-5) at Fair Field. The Reds
freshly doused the Heat 7-4 in their
only matchup July 23 in Fort Saskatch-
ewan.
The Reds will play a double header
Aug. 5, when they take on the Fort Sas-
katchewan Red Sox (6-11) at noon, fol-
lowed by a tilt with the St. Albert Car-
dinals (13-5) at 6 p.m. in the nightcap.
Tantons crew edged the Cardinals
13-12 July 15 and brushed back the Red
Sox 12-8 July 22.
Should the Reds advance to a semi-
final, it would take place Sunday, with

The bleachers were packed as fans
brought their own seating and lined
both foul lines all the way down to the
outfield wall.
The Cheadle Lions Club provided
dinner for the evening and held a 50-
50 raffle, which conveniently was won
by Rays son, Kevin, to the tune of
the provincial championship later that
evening.
We have played a lot stronger lately,
better than we did earlier in the sea-
son. We are hitting the ball strong and
having some good at bats, said catcher
Kaden Zarowny, who was one of the
returning members from last years pro-
vincial championship squad. Its going
to be great playing at home. Theres go-
ing to be a lot of pressure wanting to
play well in front of the home crowd.
Zarowny crushed the ball this season,
leading the Reds with a .479 batting
average, 23 hits and 10 stolen bases,
and he sits second on the team with
18 RBIs.
If the Reds can pull off the repeat,
they would advance to Westerns later
this month in Kamloops, B.C.
MIDGETS GEAR UP FOR TIER II
After getting crunched in last years
Tier I provincials, a retooled midget
Reds program looks to capture the pro-
vincial title at the Tier II level.
The Reds were a team in transition
this year, having graduated a crop of
veterans while bringing in players from
the bantam level.
After a sluggish June, the Reds have
started rolling in the right direction,
picking up wins of all varieties leading
up to provincials.
Its been a great season and lots of
fun. We had our ups and downs, said
catcher Scott Desserre. We might not
have performed as well as we were
hoping to coming into the year, but any
chance you get to play for a provincial
title, its an honour.
This marks Desserres third and final
year of midget baseball. He is allowed
to play as an over-ager next season, if
the Reds choose to bring him back.
Part of what made this a special sea-
son for Desserre was getting to play
alongside his younger brother Mitch.
Mitch, 15, won the provincial title at
the bantam level last year and was a
key contributor for the Reds success
this season. He carried a .298 batting
average and .729 on base plus slugging

Brister boasts
national ranking

After being one of the top barrel rac-
ers in the province, Jewel Brister cashed
in at the Canadian High School Finals
Rodeo last weekend in Nanton.
Brister, who will be entering Grade
12 at Chestermere High School this fall,
brought home nearly $1,000 and the ti-
tle of being the second-best barrel racer
in the nation.
It was a good weekend, I still didnt
get the runs I was hoping for, but it
turned out well in the end, said Brister.
Prior to the rodeo, Brister pocketed
some cash at a pair of jackpots. She won
$327 during a breakaway roping jackpot
July 25 and $150 from a barrel-racing
jackpot July 26.
The actual rodeo took place July 27
to 29 at the Nanton Agriculture Society
rodeo grounds.
There, the Dalemead product peeled
off three impressive runs to capture sec-
ond place in the aggregate standings.
She raced to a time of 16.542 sec-
onds July 27, 16.759 seconds July 28
and 16.665 seconds July 29. Her aver-
age score was 49.966, leaving her with
160.00 points on the season, in second
behind the 200.00 of Justine Elliott from
Lacombe.
Not only did she leave with cash in
her pocket and the title as one of the top
barrel racers in the land, she also scored
some gear for her horses Candy and Sae-
grums. The horses will be looking sharp,
outfitted in their new saddle pad worth
$500, and some new breast collars.
Nanton marked the end of a success-
ful season for Brister, who will take the
rest of the summer off, but she will still
ride her horses and compete in a few
jackpots when the situation presents it-
self.
It was a wild two weeks for Brister and
her friend Marissa Boisjoli, who both re-
turned from the National High School
Finals Rodeo in Gillette, Wyo. two days
prior to the event in Nanton.
My family was down in Gillette sup-
porting me, but it was nice to compete
in a finals rodeo close to home. Some of
my friends were able to come out and
watch, said Boisjoli.
Unfortunately, Bristers rodeo pal did
not have the same results at Nanton.
It was a rough week. It did not go
good at all, said Boisjoli.
The week got off to a solid start when
she pocketed $250 during a team roping
jackpot July 26.
From there, a series of mental errors
cost her a chance at any more money
and prizes.
There was nothing that I could blame
on my horse or the calf, said Boisjoli. I
missed roping them altogether.
After a no-time on the first day, she
managed to rope the calf in 3.5 seconds
during the second go at her fifth trip to
the Canadian High School Finals Rodeo.
Another no-time on the third go-round
didnt help her aggregate score and sent
her home with 35.00 points, well back
of the winner, Saskatchewans Shelby
Lockie-Queen.
It was a long two weeks, lots of trav-
el, but it was a great experience and I
can take things from these two trips into
competitions next season, said Boisjoli.

Donald James
On Sunday July 30, 2017, Don
passed away peacefully at his home
in Strathmore at the age of 67 years.
Don is survived by three sons, Laine (Sara), Wyatt
(Asha), Landon (Kim); five grandchildren, Kinsey,
Rylee, Maddex, Rome, Avi; three brothers, Moon
(Wendy), Clay (Lorna), Jaye (Rhonda); mother of
his children, Cheryl Draper; as well as numerous
nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gen and Ar-
nie Wegener and by his partner, Claire Kuchle in
2015. Don or Quiffley to his family and friends
was born on June 26, 1950 in Calgary to Gen and
Arnie Wegener. In 1953, Don was stricken with po-
lio and was left with severe scoliosis of the spine.
From 1953 to 1967, he spent most of his time at
the Alberta Childrens Hospital where he received
both treatments and education. Despite the polio,
Don maintained a fairly normal childhood; playing
sports, enjoying weekends at Pa Cotes and Uncle
Beanos farm at Carseland and made years worth of
memories spent at home with his brothers and par-
ents, eating delicious home cooked meals prepared
by his mother. In 1968, he graduated with his Se-
nior Matriculation Certificate from Samuel Crowther
School in Strathmore. Following his graduation, Don
continued with corrective surgery, completed at the
University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He had lived
and worked for fifty (plus) years within thirty miles
of his childhood home. Don had several success-
ful careers and business ventures, most memora-
bly the 28 years he spent at the Wheatland Feed-
ers Association. He spent many happy years with
his partner Claire on the farm in Cluny where they
loved gardening and puttering in the yard. In the last
few years, Don enjoyed spending his time with his
family and friends, most notably his grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at the Hope Com-
munity Covenant Church, 245 Brent Boulevard in
Strathmore on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 2:00
pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dons memory
may be made to the Wheatland & Area Hospice So-
ciety, P.O. Box 2154 Strathmore, Alberta T1P 1K2.
