Seismic Vulnerability Assessment and

Retrofitting of Existing Structures

..........................................................................................................................................................................

Overview
Indian subcontinent, being situated in a region of high to moderate seismic zone, experiences a constant threat to social and
economic developments due to frequent occurrence of the earthquakes. Hence, with growing need of earthquake
preparedness, ascertaining improved seismic performance of civil infrastructure has become an important issue. This course
aims to teach advances in earthquake engineering to address an urgent need to adopt latest design philosophies for resilient
infrastructure. Further, state-of-the-art technical knowhow on seismic performance/ vulnerability assessment and post-
earthquake damage assessment will be covered, which will facilitate retrofit strategies to be adopted for existing structures.

There are about seven modules in three categories (A, B, and C), two case studies presented by the industry experts, and a site
visit to showcase implementation of advanced technologies in earthquake resistant design of structures in real-life applications.
The modules will cover review of the basic concepts of earthquake engineering, concepts of earthquake resistant design,
seismic assessment/ evaluation of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings, post-earthquake damage assessment of
buildings, repair, strengthening, and retrofitting of the RC buildings. The participants will then be exposed to the current and
emerging philosophies in earthquake resistant design and seismic retrofitting. Case studies in this course will include, post-April
2015 Nepal earthquake: repair and rehabilitation of structures; as well as seismic evaluation of existing buildings and their
retrofitting using advanced technologies presented by the industry experts. The course will conclude by presenting the latest
advancements in seismic retrofitting of structures.
