for procedures for inspections, maintenance, repair and
remanufacture of hoisting equipment.

PART 1 NON-DESTRUCTIVE EXAMINATION


Recommended inspection 6 monthly category III.

Critical area drawings In the absence of critical area drawings, all areas of primary-
load-carrying components shall be considered critical.

The inspector shall verify if the assembly drawings and drawings identifying critical areas for the
specific piece of equipment to be inspected are available from the owner. This is to include the
history of any grinding or remanufacturing.
Prior to category III and IV inspections, all foreign material such as dirt, paint, grease, oil, scale, etc
shall be removed from the concerned parts by a suitable method e.g. paint-stripping, steam-
cleaning, grit blast.

The following hatched areas are to be non-destructive tested.

NDE will be carried out in accordance with operating procedure FO/OP/N/01.

How to report non-destructive After non-destructive examination a Non-destructive


examination examination report. Magnetic particle testing shall be issued.
(Form No. REP007).

How to report defects Defects will be identified and recorded on the non-destructive
examination report (Form REP 007). Drawings of the equipment
will be attached to the report and any defect sized and located
on the drawing. Where possible, a digital photograph of the
defect will be attached.

PART 2 DEFINITIONS OF TERMINOLOGY USED


Critical area Highly stressed area of a primary-load-carrying component.

Primary load Axial load to which the equipment is subjected in operation.

Primary-load-carrying Component of the equipment through which the primary load is


component carried.

PART 3 INDICATIONS
Where necessary for identification or repair purposes the position of flaws will be marked on the tested
surface by a method which will not adversely affect the surface. Marker pens for steel will normally fulfil
this requirement.

Linear indications
Indications in which the length is more than three times the width where not able to be further
classified shall be treated as cracklike flaws.

Rounded indications
Indications that is circular or elliptical with a length equal to or less than three times the width.

Inclusions (intermittent and aligned)


Shall be treated as linear indication cracks and cracklike flaws position, size, orientation and type.

Non-relevant indications
These are due to spurious effects, e.g. magnetic writing, changes in section, manufacturing marks,
boundaries etc. These must be stringently tested prior to confirmation as non relevant. Wherever
practicable, these indications shall be dressed and retested for confirmation as non relevant.

Allowable surface indications Surface indications of such size, shape and location that they need
not be removed.

Non-allowable indications These shall be classed as minor surface indications or major surface
indications as detailed below:

Minor surface indications These may be removed by filing or grinding if this can be achieved within
the limits specified by the manufacturer, otherwise they shall be classed as major indications.
Major surface indications These require material removal beyond the limits specified by the
manufacturer.

LOLER applies to all items of lifting equipment both onshore
and offshore and is the primary regulation in the UK. Other
national or international legislation may apply depending on
where the examination is taking place. At all times the law of the
relevant country must be complied with.

Category III Non destructive testing of critical areas and
may involve some disassembly to access specific components
and to identify wear that exceeds the manufacturers allowable
tolerances.

Category IV This is category III plus further inspection for


which the equipment is disassembled to the extent necessary to
conduct non destructive examination of all primary-load-carrying
components as defined by the manufacturer.
The above recommended inspection periods apply to equipment
in use during the specified period.

The user/owner of the equipment may develop inspection


schedules based on experience, manufacturers
recommendations, environment, load cycles, regulatory
requirements, operating time, testing, repairs and
remanufacture.

Description of equipment use A hinged mechanism that may be closed around drill pipe or
other drill string components to facilitate lowering them into the
well bore or lifting them out of the well bore. In the closed
position, the elevator arms are latched together to form a load-
bearing ring around the component. A shoulder or taper on the
component to be lifted is larger in size than the inside diameter
of the closed elevator. In the open position, the device splits
roughly into two halves and may be swung away from the drill
string component.

Identification / traceability Unit serial number or identification marking provided by the


manufacturer should be maintained on the equipment. However,
if this is not present an identification mark shall be provided by
the user/owner for unidentified equipment. Serial numbers or
identification marking shall be recorded on all reports.
