Overview
The Fiery E10 50-45C-KM Color Server embeds computer connectivity and highly efficient
PostScript and PCL printing capacity into 50-45C-KM print engines. Throughout this
service guide, this color server will be referred to as the Fiery E10.
The Fiery E10 is shipped with all necessary software already installed. You must reinstall system
software if you replace the hard disk drive (HDD) or receive a more recent version of the
system software. You may also reinstall system software as a way to troubleshoot the system.
Use the procedures in this guide to inspect, remove, reseat, or replace major hardware
components and reinstall system software.
Replacement parts for the Fiery E10 are available from your authorized service support center.
Precautions
Always observe the following general precautions when servicing the Fiery E10 assembly:
1. Report any shipping damage.
If you see any evidence of shipping or handling damage to packing boxes or their contents,
save the damaged boxes and parts, call the shipper immediately to file a claim, and notify your
authorized service/support center.
Never alter an existing network without permission.
The Fiery E10 is probably connected to an existing Local Area Network (LAN) based on
Ethernet hardware. The network is the link between the customers computer, existing laser
printers, and other prepress equipment. Never disturb the LAN by breaking or making a
network connection, altering termination, installing or removing networking hardware or
software, or shutting down networked devices without the knowledge and express permission
of the site administrator.
2. Never assign an IP address in Network Setup.
Only the site administrator should assign an IP address on a network device. Entering an
incorrect IP address to the Fiery E10 can cause unpredictable errors on any or all devices.
3. Follow standard ESD (electrostatic discharge) precautions while working on the internal
components of the print engine.
Static is always a concern when servicing electronic devices. It is highly unlikely that the area
around the print engine is static-free. Carpeting, leather-soled shoes, synthetic clothing fibers,
silks, and plastics may generate a static charge of more than 10,000 volts. Static discharge is
capable of destroying the circuits etched in silicon microchips, or dramatically shortening
their life span. By observing standard precautions, you may avoid extra service calls and save
the cost of a new board.
When possible, work on a ground-connected antistatic mat. Wear an antistatic wristband,
grounded at the same place as the antistatic mat. If that is not possible:
Attach a grounding strap to your wrist. Attach the other end to a good ground.
When you remove an electronic component, place it in an antistatic bag immediately.
Do not walk across a carpet or vinyl floor while carrying an unprotected board.
Leave new electronic components inside their antistatic bags until you are ready to install
them.
When you unpack the electronic components, touch a metal area of the print engine to
discharge the static on your body. Place the components on a grounded antistatic surface,
component-side up.
4. Avoid flexing a printed circuit board, and handle it by opposing edges (not corners) only.
Only use the power cord that shipped with the Fiery E10 or an appropriate replacement
power cord available from an authorized provider.
Always disconnect the power cord from the Fiery E10 back panel before opening the unit
and servicing internal components.
Do not pull on the power cord when unplugging the Fiery E10. Pull the plug instead.
Do not place objects on the power cord. Place the power cord away from foot traffic.
Do not tamper with or disable the power cord grounding plug.
Do not use a 3-prong adapter in a 2-hole ungrounded outlet.
Do not use an extension cord.
Do not plug the Fiery E10 into a circuit with heating or refrigeration equipment (including
water dispensers).
Do not plug the Fiery E10 into a switchable power outlet. This can result in the Fiery E10
being turned off accidentally.
Never set any liquid on or near the Fiery E10 or copier. If liquid is spilled into the Fiery E10 or
copier, disconnect the power cord immediately.
Do not attempt to open the power supply or hard disk drive (HDD).
Use care when handling parts of the Fiery E10, as some edges on the unit may be sharp.

Press the Soft power button for two seconds to power on; press it for several seconds to shut
down the Fiery E10. Using the Soft power button to shut down the Fiery E10 does not power
off the Fiery E10 completely.
Always shut down the Fiery E10 properly before you unplug the AC power cable. Unplug the
AC power cable from the wall outlet before you disconnect other cables connected to the
Fiery E10. Cable disconnections require a complete power off.
Power up
In general, always make sure that the Fiery E10 is warmed up before you turn on the copier.
This is especially important if the system is using DHCP to assign IP addresses for network
communication and a LAN cross-over cable connects the print engine to the COPIER port
on the Fiery E10.

Test PageOutput verifies that the Fiery E10 is functional and connected properly to the
print engine. The Test Page is a file that resides in the Fiery E10.
Configuration pageLists all the settings in effect from the current Setup. After you have
finished running Setup, print a Configuration page to confirm your settings. If the Fiery E10 is
rebooting, allow the Fiery E10 to reboot and return to Idle before printing a Configuration
page.
Before you perform any service procedure, print the Fiery E10 Configuration page
(if possible) so that you are prepared to return the settings to their former configurations, if
necessary.
After the connection to the network is made, the site administrator can customize Setup
options according to the network and user environment. Using the Configuration page as a
guide can help speed up this process. For more information, see Configuration and Setup on
the User Documentation CD.
This step assumes that both the print engine and Fiery E10 are powered on and warmed up.
3. Press the Menu button on the control panel LCD.
4. Select Print pages.
5. Select the page that you want to print (use the arrow key, if necessary).
You can select the following pages: PS Test Page, PCL Test Page, Configuration, Job Log,

Troubleshooting process
The following sections identify the sources of common problems that may occur with
the Fiery E10 and suggest ways of correcting them.
These sections do not attempt to provide troubleshooting information for attached computers
such as PCs, for the Print Engine, or for extensive networks. Refer problems in these areas to
the appropriate service departments and site administrators.
The troubleshooting process is designed to eliminate the most obvious causes of failure before
progressing to more complex issues. Where problems occur on page 57 gives an overview of
the Fiery E10 components and indicates areas most likely to require troubleshooting.
Try a phone check before you go to the customer site.
Before you go to the customer site on page 60 suggests areas you should check before
making a service call to the customer site. With a phone call, you can find out if the
problem is a simple operating failure or a failure caused by a network or configuration
change. You can ask the customer to check for loose cables on the back of the Print Engine
and loose connections at a power strip or outlet.
Check for obvious causes of problems.
Check network connections.
On-site checkout on page 61 takes you through the initial visual checks you should
make when you arrive at the customer site.
Checking the network on page 76 provides guidelines for checking the network
connections between the Print Engine and the computers to which it is connected, as well
as information on several printing problems.
The Fiery E10 hardware and system software provide efficient image processing and printing
controls. The Fiery E10 uses the motherboard and a custom interface board to process image
data for printing and scanning images.
The motherboard includes a 1.86 GHz Intel Celeron CPU that controls the image data
transfer to and from the motherboard and runs the interpreter. The interpreter rasterizes the
page description file and compresses the image pattern into memory using compression
technology.
The interpreter outputs compressed raster data through the image frame buffer memory to
the Fiery E10 interface board. The raster data is supplied to the print engine, which then
renders the final image on paper at full rated engine speed.
A single 512MB high-speed DIMM (dual in-line memory module) in slot DIMM2 on the
motherboard holds the image data during printing.
When Fiery Scan uses the print engine as a scanner, the Fiery E10 acquires image data from the
print engine, stores it in memory, and transmits it to the computer that requested the scan.

If the Print Engine works, but the user cannot print the Fiery E10 Test Page, a service call is
probably required.
2. Is the failure caused by a simple operating problem?
If network changes have occurred, request that the customers site administrator verify the
Fiery E10 network requirements.
4. Is the user having printing problems with a particular image file?
If there are problems with files from particular applications, the user may be more successful
using different print settings.
If your telephone call fails to solve the problem, proceed to the next phase, the preliminary
on-site checkout.
On-site checkout
Before you remove the Fiery E10:
Make sure that the external cables are connected properly.
If all the connectors are in place and the problem still exists when the Print Engine is powered
on, proceed to the next phase of troubleshooting.
N OTE : For convenience, the procedure To check internal connections on page 18 is repeated
here under Troubleshooting.
See other documentation for guidelines when disassembling, checking, and reassembling the
Print Engine.
The most common causes of hardware problems are faulty or loose connections. Before you
decide to replace any parts of the Fiery E10, make sure to verify all cables and connections. If
you have verified external connections, check the internal connections.
