BioPAT MFCS/win
Connectivity

Connectivity has to be separated into two different categories :

on the one hand there are different possibilities connecting a device in terms of software such as drivers, OPC or
via a programmable interface. On the other hand there are different protocols like RS232, RS422 or Ethernet.
Both things have to keep apart for instance the connection of a Biomass Analyser can be managed via a
BioPAT MFCS-driver or an BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Client that depends on the software of the related
device. But it has nothing to do with the way of used protocol like RS422 or Ethernet.

Drivers, BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Client and BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Server do not provide a visible functionality
itself. All three components are technical preconditions to connect additional systems.
Drivers and the BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Client add the possibility to BioPAT MFCS to be the Data acquisition
and control part for the connected systems. Components may be both software and hardware.
The BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Server adds the possibility to provide BioPAT MFCS information to other
systems. In this case BioPAT MFCS itself is the information supplier and can be controlled by 3rd party
components. Components may be software only.
An advertisement in terms of drivers, BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Client or BioPAT MFCS OPC-Server only make
sence with properly described applications like for instance the connection of the ABER-Biomass Analyser or
the possibilities of a superior management system.

Drivers

Drivers in BioPAT MFCS allow the connection of additional equipment to the BioPAT MFCS software
package. The connection of additional equipment via drivers is only required, if there is no OPC-Server for this
specific equipment available and thus we cant use our BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Client. Especially our competition
like Applikon and New Brunswick do not provide an OPC-Server for their control units. BBI closes this gap by
developing special drivers for them. Furthermore there is as well additional other equipment like Biomass- or
Cell-Analysers available on the market, which also do not provide an OPC-Server.
In principle, each driver is one optional package.

Currently available drivers:

DFC, DCU
ADI 1020/1030 (Applikon)
BioFlo III (New Brunswick)
Balances (MettlerToledo, Sartorius)
VG Masspectrometer (VG-Instruments)
Gas analyser (Ametek Dycor)
HPLC Analyser (Biospectra Chromatograph)
Analyser GP/EA (Biospectra Photometer)
ABER Biomass Analyser
Analog measurement and control units (through FIS)
BIOSTAT CultiBag basic (Omron PLC)

OPC-Client

Based on the latest hard and software technology, BioPAT MFCS has an Open Process Control-Client (OPC-
Client). This OPC-client allows connecting to external OPC enabled equipment. OPC is a software interface for
industrial automation, with the aim to make driver development for control systems unnecessary. The BioPAT
MFCS-OPC-Client reads measurement values, transfers process parameters to the substations and provides them
for analysing in BioPAT MFCS/Professional.
BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Client has to be installed at the same computer where the BioPAT MFCS-Server is
running.

OPC-Server

The BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Server provides access to various BioPAT MFCS information such as measured
values, calculated values or batch information. It enhances the BioPAT MFCS Server with the possibility to
connect it to a 3rd party software via their OPC-Client to use the values from BioPAT MFCS for the most
different purposes. For instance use the existing values to create models in a software package like Mathlab or
forward the data for used substrates to a superior material management system.

The BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Server must be installed at the same computer where BioPAT MFCS-Server itself
is installed and does not work without BioPAT MFCS-Server. The BioPAT MFCS-OPC-Server is compliant
with version 2.03 of OPC-Server definition.
