Behavior Contingency Plan

Chosen Grade Level: 4th Grade
Justification: The 4th grade social studies TEKS are centered around Texas History.

Model attractive, shows effort & thought, shows behavior, progress toward goal, activity
At the beginning of the implementation of this plan, the bulletin board will be papered with a
blank outline of the state of Texas. Next to the bulletin board, there will be an envelope
containing 175 pieces of paper with the names of Texas cities, landmarks, rivers, historical
figures, and events. Every time a student is caught performing desirable behavior, the teacher
pulls a slip of paper out of the envelope, and puts it on the student's desk. When the student
has free time (i.e. before lunch, at the end of the day) the student is responsible for looking up
where the Texas city/landmark/historical figure/event is located on the Texas map, and then the
student uses double sided tape to put their piece of paper in the appropriate location.
When all pieces of paper have been placed on the bulletin board, students earn a
Texas Day.

Catchy, positive title that fits the desirable behavior and final activity
Texas: The Friendship State

Undesirable Behavior Targeted:

Defined in observable & measurable terms, w/ explanation of how it interferes with learning.
-Students call each other negative names.
-Students exclude others from activities
-Students push each other when walking down the hallway
These negative social behaviors take place at least eight times per day.
When students are unfriendly to one another, the classroom is no longer a positive environment.
When a student is worried about bullies, their affective filter is high, which discourages them
from taking risks in learning.
Desirable (expected) Behavior Targeted:
Defined in observable & measurable terms what exact behavior will be reinforced
These expectations must be on your board in simple, clear, statements/pictures
-Students will be polite with their words by saying Please Thank You and Excuse Me
-Students will invite others who are left out to work and play with them.
-Students will keep their hands to herself/himself at all times.
-Students will share materials.
-Students will use kind words to resolve problems, rather than physical aggression.
- Students will encourage others with their words and actions i.e. You can do it! What a great
job you did. I really like how

Types of positive reinforcements - Reinforced when & how?

Immediate & delayed R+ should be related to the final activity being earned.
1. Immediate R+ (generally BSPS with a tangible (i.e., tally mark, token, etc)
-Students will earn a piece of history (i.e. a piece of paper) from the envelope.
2. Ongoing R+ (tangible that accumulate as a class to show progression toward goal)

-Students will be able to see how many cities they have placed on the map.
3. Overall R+ - Name the Novel Interactive Learning Activity for whole class when goal is met
-Students will have a Texas theme day.
a) Parent volunteers will provide a hamburger lunch
b) Students will be encouraged to wear western clothes (including hats).
c) Texas culture and history will be incorporated in all subject matter that day.
4. Explain how you will quickly & easily administer all R+ (both immediate R+ & ongoing R+)
without interrupting teaching.
When I notice a student illustrating positive behavior, I will draw a piece of history from the
envelope on the bulletin board, and place it on their desk. Students will be explicitly
taught to wait until the end of the day to put their slip of paper on the map.

Interactive Learning Activity

Describe & give details of how you will implement the final R+ of an Interactive
Learning Activity as soon as goal is met. Include the TEK # & topic in this section.
After students have earned all the slips of paper in the envelope (the immediate R+) the
students will earn a Texas theme day (the final R+). This day will involve the following:
Texas history and culture being incorporated in the days curriculum (i.e. Find the
perimeter of the Texas Panhandle (4.5C Algebraic Reasoning), students will play Texas
Jeopardy (4.3 History) students will study organisms and environments of Texas
(4.9/4.10 Organisms and environments), students will read The Legend of the
Bluebonnet by Tomie dePaola and will journal about and discuss the books theme
related to Texas symbols (4.3 Reading/Comprehension of Literary Texts/Theme and
Genre), students will learn about common Texan idioms (4.2D Reading/Vocabulary
Development)
Students will be encouraged to wear Western clothing, including Texas-themed hats
(Other hats are okay too if a student doesnt have a cowboy hat or a Texas sports team
cap).
Parent volunteers will provide a hamburger lunch and Blue Bell ice cream.

Explain HOW you will Teach the Desired Behaviors:

Provide an outline of how you will teach desired behavior(s)
I will teach the desired behaviors interactively by having students act out desired behaviors in
small groups. In addition, I will read character-building childrens literature, and then have
students journal about the theme of the book. We will discuss the desired behaviors as a class
during our morning meetings.

Explain HOW you will Teach the Plan:

Explain when and how you will teach the plan to your students.
I will introduce the plan to students by devoting an entire morning meeting to the topic. I will begin
by explaining, Im sad, because I feel like I have seen a lot of unfriendly behaviors in our
classroom. I want our classroom to be a friendly space! Then with students, I will create a T-chart
with one side being the undesirable behaviors, and then the other side will be the desirable

behaviors we want our classroom to adopt. Im imagining that this process will be similar to that in
making a social contract at the beginning of the year.
After I have students invested in making our classroom a friendlier place, I will introduce the Texas
bulletin board, and the behavior contingency plan.

Provide options
Tell how you might implement plan across Class Periods (secondary level) OR
adjustments you may need to make to extend the original plan for another behavior.
For schools that have departmentalized 4th grade programs, this behavior contingency plan can
be easily adapted to fit the needs of multiple class periods by dividing a bulletin board, so that
each class period will have their own Texas outline and envelope. With multiple class periods, the
number of slips of paper in each envelope should be reduced as well.
To adapt the final R+, the earned Texas Day would just take place in your classroom, unless the
other teachers on your grade-level team would be willing incorporate Texas history and culture
into their lessons that day too.
