CVEN 2401 Workshop: Week 12

Completing a Road Design and Technical Drawings

This workshop focusses on completing a road design and the technical drawings which are
associated with the final preliminary designs.
Task 1:
The following provides a checklist of the requirements to complete the design assignment.
Assessment of existing road design:
o Does the existing route satisfy sight requirements?
o What other features of note can you identify along the route that are an issue
from a road design perspective?
Re-Designed Horizontal Alignment:
o What assumptions were made whilst developing the alignment for the
assignment? (Think about impacts of the change in alignment to land use and
intersection geometry)
o Does the re-design satisfy the guidelines presented in Austroads Guide to
Road Design (2016)? (Verification Calculations)
Re-Designed Vertical Alignment:
o What assumptions were made whilst developing the alignment for the
assignment? (Think about impacts of the change in alignment to land use and
intersection geometry)
o Does the re-design satisfy the guidelines presented in Austroads Guide to
Road Design (2016)? (Verification Calculations)
Earthworks:
o What are the earthworks necessary at the completion of the preliminary road
design?
o Has your group balanced cut and fill throughout the alignment?
Technical Drawings:
o Has your group drawn the Longitudinal Section?
o Has your group drawn the necessary Cross-Sections?
Discussion and Conclusion:
o Has your group re-designed Barker Street satisfying the standards?
o What are the next steps in the design process and what must be rectified in
those stages? (Is it feasible to acquire the land? Do intersections need to be
designed?)
Project Management Statement:
o Provide a statement describing the contribution of each member of the group
(indicate contribution using percentage contributed to the final assignment)

Task 2:
The assignment requires for your group to present the following technical drawings:
Longitudinal Section
o Design Terrain Profile
o Horizontal Curvature Graph
o Change in superelevation Graph.
Cross-Sections
o Clearly identify the locations of the cross-sections using station points.
o Present only the carriageway (remember you are designing an Urban Road)
Ensure that you understand how to create each of these and if you are confused ask your
demonstrators for further guidance.
