Chapter 1

Introduction

Some Filipinos have always been fascinated with other culture. They wanted to

experience the so called American dream. This pheomenon often labeled as colonial

mentality or the preference for all things foreign over our own. This is also evident in

the way foreign films, songs, clothes and language have great influence on our own.

(Lasado, 2014).

In a survey conducted by FEU along with other 8 univerities, over 4000 freshmen

respondents, ages 16 to 18, 74.3% have expressed their desire to work abroad mainly

because of the high pay (Rappler, 2015) this only expresses that many young filipinos

believed that other countries would be able to offer them with great opportunities and

great salary.

Accroding to a writer, the five countries with the highest paying salaries for registered

nurses are; United kingdom, United States of America, Norway, Canada and
Australia (Cherian, 2017). This shows that countries that offer the highest salaries for

nurses are mostly located in the west. And these kinds of data might encourage the

filipino nurses to try their luck in othr countries.

Our study is mainly focused on the students on which continent and nursing field

they think would provide them the best opportunity to boost their career.

Statement of the Problem

This research attempts to find the outlook of the 4th year student nurses of Colegio

San Agustin-Bacolod AY 2017-2018 on better career opportunities. More specifically,

it seeks to discover the answers to the following questions:

1) What nursing field does the CSA-B 4th year student nurses think would provide

them better career shot?

2) What continent would be an ideal workplace to start nursing career?

Hypothesis

1) Perioperative nurse is the most preferred nursing field than others.

2) Europe is the continent that provides better career opportunities.

Significance of the Study

Students, the results will serve as a guide to them on which path to take based on the

popular opinions that the respondents have answered.

Parents, the study will give them a chance to participate and to encourage their

childrens decision making.

Agencies, the study will make them realize and aware of the preferences of the

incoming registered nurses.

Scope and Limitations

The study was conducted to determine the perspective of the student nurses on better

career opportunities. It will cover the frequent questions asked by the people; what

continent would be an ideal workplace for a nurse to start working? Also, what field

of Nursing would provide a better career shot? The total target respondents pf the

study are 27 females and 3 males, all student nurses are enrolled in the first semester

of Colegio San Agustin- Bacolod AY. 2017-2018. Other student nurses, who are still

undergraduates, are not involved in the study. The researchers will start their study on

July 28, 2017- October 23, 2017.

One of the limitations of the studyis the time and financial constraints for the

researchers do not have an ample amount of time to work on the said study due to the

demand of lectures and duties that are needed to comply. Financial issues would also

be an addition since money is needed to produce questionnaire and to print the

research papers.
