a water table underneath the earth that you tap into through
discipline. All it takes to tap this unlimited pool is (a) desire

and (b) a willingness to show up and dig. Its truly that sim-
ple. Talent is beside the point.
Look at it from the muses point of view. If you have an
important project to present to the world, would you pick
some two-timing, tap-dancing Willy too scared to commit?
Or would you nominate the person who shows up every day,
who is loyal, like the backyard dog?
Practice Two: Ask. This is where the invocation comes
in. Once you have the muses attention, simply ask them to
use your skills, whatever they might be, in their service. Ask to
be their channel. Agree to take dictation. Come at it humbly
admitting you could use some assistance. In fact, your cre-
ative project for Week Two is to write your own personal invo-
cation to the muses. Mine is a five-line plea Ive been using
for many years. I cut and paste it to the top of every project I
undertake. I wouldnt dream of writing even a birthday card
to my mother without its aid and assistance.
In addition to the projects, each week offers an essay on
creativity and what I call Zumba for the Soul. These activities
came straight off a big sheet of butcher block paper that I
taped to the door in my basement office when my daughter
Taz was four. Recognizing the weighty assignment of being a
single parent, I was determined to do a good job raising her.
But at the same time, I didnt want to lose my creative spark.
I didnt want to surrender my free spirit. So on the door-long
piece of paper, I magic-markered ideas I could undertake to
keep my mojo going. Fun projects I could model, creative
sparkplugs we could enjoy together.
Each week also includes a brief anecdote about a well-
known artist, an artist who is successful, who has made it. I
call this part of the book Youre in Good Company, because
youll quickly come to realize that real artists are just like
youjust as human, just as scared.

If you saw the 1984 film Amadeus, you know all about Anto-
nio Salieri, the Viennese court composer who had a, well . . .
complicated relationship with Mozart. Recognizing the young
composers artistic gift, Salieri was intensely jealous of his
young protg and did everything he could to sabotage him.
Thats why I call the voice that continually tries to defile
every noble attempt at creating art my Inner Salieri. Its the
voice that puts a roadblock between me and everything the
higher forces ask me to do. The voice that tells me Im not
good enough to produce anything of value. The wily foe that,
in my opinion, is the root cause of all the worlds depression
and unhappiness.
The good news is that, with discipline, you can sweep it
into a cage and become its warden. The essays for the follow-
ing 13 weeks outline the many guises this enemy will take. Its
important to know them going in. Arming yourself against
your Inner Salieri is a day-by-day process, one that can only
succeed by showing up, staring it down, asking for help, and
opening the trench coat to the real you, the naked you inside.

Most books tell you how to get somethinga sizzling sex life,
thinner thighs, a higher return on your investment dollars. Art
& Soul is a book that tells you how to give, how to reach deep
inside yourself and pull out the artistic blessing that is yours to
give. The blessing no one else can give.
Maybe its a poem tapping on your heart. Maybe theres
a song that keeps you awake at night, a business idea that
wont leave you alone. A dream you keep pushing aside with
some thought like, Nah! I could never sing or dance like that. I
could never start a business.
Now is the time to quit pushing that dream aside.

Just Do It
Analyze Your Time
Since this is the year where your life is going to explode open
(in the best possible way), lets start with a little creative in-
vestigation.
For the next week, simply log the amount of time you
spend on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media. Thats it.
Just write down the number of minutes (hours?) you spend
liking, commenting, and scrolling through status updates.
According to 2015 analytics (and Im sure it has only gone
up), the average Facebook user spends 40 minutes trawling
per day. You might also want to note your time expenditure
staring at a box. That is, your television set.
Next week, after youve got a handle on the amount of
time you spend on these two activities, youre going to sur-
render half of that time (say 20 minutes, if youre in the na-
tional average) to commune with what artists over the years
have called the muses. I guarantee the stuff youll discover
