LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

Grade Level: Grade 11

Content: Integration

Strategy: Problem Solving and Cooperative Learning

I: Objectives:

At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

1. Sketch the graph of the area bounded by a given function

2. Compute the area of the plane region using the definite integral
3. Appreciate the real-life situation problems involving areas of plane regions.

II: Subject Matter:

Applications of definite integral , Code: STEM-BC11I-IVi-j-1

III: Materials Needed

a) 5-pcs Manila paper (1 for each group)

b) 5-pcs marking pens

IV: Instructional Procedure:

A: Review

B. Presentation of the Problem

Strategy used: problem solving and cooperative learning

a) Divide the class into 5 groups (count off by 5s or use previews

grouping)
b) All # 1s be group 1, # 2 be group 2 and so on
c) Allow them to meet their group members and select a leader
d) Let the leader write the names of their members in a sheet of
paper
e) Post the problem
f) Distribute the manila paper and marking pens
g) Give them 10 minutes to brainstorm, discuss and solve the problem
with group members
h) The teacher facilitates (may assist the discussion but never give the
concept/answer to the problem)
i) Let them post their solutions/answers and
j) Identify who will present (the leader may do so)
k) The group will take their turn in the presentation.
l) Use HOTS (higher order thinking skill) questions to guide the
students to arrive at the concept of the subject matter.
m) The students are able to judge the status of their answers

To the students: Read and understand the problem carefully. Answer and write the
complete solutions.

C. Processing

Guide Questions:

1. How are you going to solve the area of a rectangle?

2. From the concept of Riemann Sum, how did you solve the area?
3. Using the fundamental Theorem of Calculus how are you going to compute the
definite integral?

D. Assignment

Problem: Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs: 1 = 2 2 2 = .

E. Summary

1. Let the function f be defined each number of the closed interval [, ], and let R be
the region bounded by the graph of function, f, the x-axis and the given limits x = a and x = b.
Graph:

4
2
R

a b

2. Subdivide , into sub intervals which determines a unique rectangle whose length
is y and width .

3. The area of the small subdivision is ().

4. To approximate the area of the region, R, we will sum up all the small areas bounded
by A = ().

5. From the concept of Riemann Sum, A = () sq units, gives the area of the
region bounded by the graph of the function, f, the y-axis and the lines given by x = a and x
= b.

F. Assessment:

Find the area of the given region bounded by the graphs of the given equations.

1. = 2 2 + 3, , = 2, = 1
2. = 6 2 , = 0
1
3. = 2 , = 0, = 2, = 3
