4: OPVLs
1)A Servant Girl Pays the Ages of Sins
Document written by the court of Virginia with the given punishments to Anne Park
after trial. It is intended to be private since it talks about how Anne is punished for having a
baby while working for a woman. I think many details are omitted and its an official policy
because it is part of something dictated by the court. It reveals the unfair treatment of the time
shows the punishment she will receive is to serve two more years.
2)The Governor Upholds the law
Piece of Berkeleys apology to colonists for his aggressiveness towards some of Bacons
people to all Virginia before the rebellion went on. It was intended to be public for all Virginians
and it is a reflection since he is sharing a reflection of his cruelties forgiveness. The document
includes a confession of the cruel actions he took on Bacons followers, but also wants to
convince people to stand in his place. It might have omitted facts because it is an apology and
deep down he still hates Bacons followers.
3)Slavery is Justified
Brutal frank letter written by a minister of the gospel (reverend Peter) that demands for
the help of African slaves in Virginia This letter was intended to be private for his brother Moses
and acts as a justification for the needs of slaves in Virginia It talks about the poverty they went
through and left them without slaves, and pleads his brother for the help. There is a chance of
mistruths and exaggerations in order to receive the help of slaves.
4)The Stono River Rebellion in South Carolina
Article written by a white contemporary in 1739 when Black slaves practically revolted
and marched to Florida. It is intended to be public for the white settlers to read to know about
this slave getaway. The article talks about how the slaves killed anyone in the way, but also how
confident they were at first that they would reach Florida and nobody stopped them. Their
might be exaggeration because it was written in awareness.
5)The Salem Witchcraft Hysteria
Written testimonies of Martha Carries trial were she was accused and questioned of
being a witch at the time when the teenage girls confessed being bewitched by older ladies in
Salem. It was intended to be public and read by distinct judges to determine her fate guilty or
not. It was full of eye witnesses accusing Martha of being a witch putting as examples how she
made cattle and people sick. These testimonies might be true but could be most likely mistruths
that people were forced to say for her to receive punishment.
6)Sections of a Slave Ship, Middle Passage
Image from the 18th century when slaves were being imported as a trade good by the
Middle Passage. This image must be intended to be public to show people how the cargo in the
ships was divided, and on present days serves as proof of the horrendous treatment the African
slaves went through. Image shows the Sections highlighting how millions of African slaves were
crowded into a space 3ft tall. The image depicts the intentions of the Whites shipping. There is
no mistruth or exaggeration because at that time it was fun for them to do it.
