IntroductiontoDigitalCitizenship
60minutes

1. ContentArea.
TheskillsdevelopedinthislessonmostnaturallyconnectwiththeEnglishLanguageArts
(ELA)curriculum.Theinstructorsareoftheopinionthatwhiledigitalcitizenshipdoesnotfall
withintheascribedELAcurriculuminmostschools,itcanbeexploredinwaysthatstrengthen
reading,speaking,writing,listening,andcriticalthinkingskills.Assuch,ELAteacherscanbe
integralinensuringthatallstudentshaveabetterunderstandingofthebenefitsanddangersof
digitalaccessandfeelcomfortableinmakingsmartchoicesabouttheuseofsocialmediaplatforms.
Inrecognizingourstudentsascitizens,wearealsomakingconnectionstoHistory/SocialStudies
curriculums.

2. Purpose/Goals
Thegoalofthislessonisforstudentstobetterunderstandthebenefitsandthedangersof
digitalaccessbydrawingonpersonalexperiences,usingdigitalrole-playing,andparticipatingin
variousclassroomformsofclassroomdiscussion.Studentswillsynthesizeandapplythisknowledge
and,asacommunity,willcreatebestpracticesforresponsiblyengagingwithsocialmediaplatforms.
Thesebestpracticesareessentialinpreventingstudentsfrommakingchoicesonsocialmediathat
willleadendangerthemselvesorwillhurttheschoolcommunityinanotherway(e.g.studentsmay
engageincyberbullyingorbecyberbullied).Moreover,incomingtogetherexplicitlyasacommunity,
wehopetodevelopdigitalawarenessinstudentswhilestrengtheningthefeelingsofrespectand
trustwithintheclassroom.Finally,whiledevelopinganunderstandingofbestpracticesforsocial
mediaengagement,wealsoaimtostrengthenstudentreading,writing,speaking,listening,and
criticalthinkingskills,inalignmentwiththeNYSELAstandards.

3. Objectives
a. Studentswillbeablearticulatebestpracticesforresponsiblesocialmedia
engagementbyreflectingonpersonalexperiences,participatinginrole-playing
activitiesandclassdiscussions,andreflectingontherulesofengagementwewill
establishasacommunity.

i. DigitalCitizen:Studentsrecognizetherights,responsibilitiesand
opportunitiesofliving,learningandworkinginaninterconnected
digitalworld,andtheyactandmodelinwaysthataresafe,legalandethical.

technology,includingsocialinteractionsonlineorwhenusingnetworked
devices.

5. Assessment
Summative:
a.Studentswillevidencetheirlearningthroughthecreationof
classroomguidingprinciplesfordigitalcitizenship.Theywillalsosubmit
theirownpersonalreflectionsintheformofanexitticket.Students
representtheirtakeawaythoughtsfromtheclassintheformoftweets;
studentswillleavetheirTweetspostedtothedoorastheyleaveclass.The
artifactscreatedbythestudentsduringthislessonwilllinktothesummative
unitbyprovidingapointofreferenceandrulesforthestudentsthroughout
thedigitalcitizenshipunit.
Formative:
a.Studentlearningduringthelessonwillbeassessedthroughteacher
observationoftheiractiveparticipationwhileplayingtherole-playingdigital
citizenshipactivity,aswellasthroughtheirverbalparticipationincreating
theclassroomguidingprinciplesfordigitalcitizenship.Peertopeer
collaborationcanalsobeutilizedthroughoutthelesson.Evidenceofstudent
learningcanbesharedinmultiplewaysduringthelesson(writtentext,
picturerepresentation,gameplay),andwillbefurtherdisplayedthroughtheir
extendedlearningassignment(studentsselecttheirpreferredmediumfor
expressioninordertosharetheirthoughtsandexperiences).

6. CommunityKnowledgeandExperience:Thislessonplanseekstoacknowledge,
validateandempowerstudentsandtheirparentsatmultiplepoints,including:
a. Studentexperienceiscentralizedintheopeningactivityinwhichstudentsengage
withtheCommonSenseactivities.Fromthispointforward,studentexperiencesare
consideredastextsandareencouragedtobeusedasevidenceintheclassroom
discussion.
b. Similarly,studentexperiencesarevaluedastextswiththeopeningactivity.In
additiontoreadingaboutothersexperienceswithtechnologies,studentsare
welcomedandencouragedtosharetheirownexperiencespriortotodaysclassand
tousetheseexperiencesasevidencetosupporttheirclaimsandunderstandingsof
technology.
c. Thefinalactivity-inwhichanswergarden.comisusedtodeterminethemost
popularrulesstudentswanttocommitto-alsopositionsstudentsassourcesof
knowledgeinthattheythemselvesdetermineandconstructtherulesof
engagementthattheclasswillcodify.Duringthistime,theteachershouldensure
thatstudentsareengagedwiththeactivitybutshouldensurethatthefinalrules
originatefromclassconsensuswithoutauthoritativeinterference.
d. TheteacherwillcreateaGoogledocandsharewithallstudentsthatcodifiesthe
rulesidentifiedbyanswergardenasmostvaluedbythestudents.Theteacherwill
sendhomeprintedcopiestobesigned.Familiesandparentsareinvolvedbybeing
askedtosignthecontractandcommittingtohelpstudentsupholdtherulesof
engagement.Studentswillalsosignthecontractandreturntotheclassroom.Finally,
theteacherwillsignthecontract,sendingacopyhomeandkeepingtheoriginalin
theeventthataconversationaboutpropertechuseisneeded.Thisensuresthatall
stakeholdersareawareofandinvolvedindeterminingandcommittingtobest
practicesaroundtechnologyuse.
e. Oneofthemajoraimsofthislessonisthatitisaccessibletoallstudents.Inhopes
ofachievingthisgoal,wehaveusedmultimodalactivitiesthroughout.

Studentswillcollaborateviaanswergarden.cominordertoidentifymostpopularOnlineCodeof
Conduct:GuidingPrinciples.Theteacherwillthencodifythefivetosevenmostcommon
responsesintoaGoogledocthatwillbesharedwithallstudentsandfamilies.Thisdocumentwill
alsobereferencedthroughouttheremainderoftheunitandschoolyearbasedontheirpersonal
experiencesandtheirexperiencesplayingtheonlinegame.Studentswillbeinstructedtoprintout
theGoogleDocathome;ifthestudentdoesnothaveaccesstoaprinter,thentheteacherwillprint
outthedocumentafterclassandhavethephysicaldocumentavailableforpickupoutsidethe
classroomdoor.Allstakeholderswillsignthedocumentasamarkoftheircommitmenttofollowing
theprinciples.

post,oranaudio-recordedreflection.StudentswillsharesaidPSAonamediaplatformofchoice.
StudentswillsubmiteitheralinktotheironlinePSApostorascreenshotoftheirposttothe
instructorasproofofcompletingtheassignment.

8. DifferentiatedInstruction
Activitieswillhavemultiplemeansofengagementandinteractionforthestudents.The
onlinedigitalcompassactivitycanbeaccessedinEnglishaswellasSpanishtoaddressthe
needsofSpanish-speakingELLstudents.Byallowingstudentstosharetheirpersonal
experienceswithinthelesson,connectionsarebeingmadetotheirlivedrealitiesasaformof
culturalinclusion.Studentswillalsobeabletocollaboratewithapartnerduringtheonline
activityiftheyrequireadditionalassistancetoparticipate.Contentwillbepresentedto
studentsthroughmultiplemeansinalignmentwithUniversalDesignforLearning.Students
willbeabletoexpresstheirlearningandpracticeskillsinarticulation,writing,andcontent
vocabularyskillsthroughmultiplemediums,includingthefollowing:verbalclassroom
discussion;onlinetyping(orspeech-to-text);andpicturerepresentation.Asapartoftheir
extendedlearning,studentswillalsorepresentthisthroughthefollowingmediums:video;
photographicpiece;aninfographic;awrittenonlinepostoranaudio-recordedreflection.
Theuseofmultipleformatsforlessonmaterialswillallowtheinstructortomoreeasilymeet
thespecificaccommodationsofstudentIEPs.

citizenshipinaninteractive,immersiveexperience.Additionally,thechromebooksareneededto

candrawortypetoexpresstheirpersonalexperienceswithinteractionsonline,andcaneasilyand
instantaneouslycollaborateasneeded.Finally,theChromebookswillallowaccesstotheclosing
codificationactivitytobecompletedviaanswergarden.com.
TheprofessorwilluseGoogledocstocodifythestudentrulesofengagementandwillsharethesewith
students.Studentswillthenhaveaccesstotherulesfromtheirphonesandfromtheclass
Chromebooks.

Theseinstructorswillserveashumansupportthroughoutthelessonandwillactasaidsforstudents
withIEPsandELLstudents.

10. Applications,Connections&Extension
a. Thislessonisintendedtoextendbeyondtheclassroomasallstakeholderswillbe
askedtocommittofollowingtherulesofengagementdraftedinclass.Whilethe
actualcontractwillbesenthomeinthedaysfollowingtheactivity,thegoalisthat
studentskeeptheprinciplesinmindduringtheirdailytechnologyuse.
b. Thetweetexitticketactivityisdesignedtobothinformallyassessstudent
understandingandallowstudentstomakeafinalpersonalconnection/application
withthematerial,astheyreflectonwhattheywanttokeepinmindfromtodays
lesson.
c. Inanidealsituation,thislessonwillalsobeextendedwithamorelengthydigital
citizenshiponboarding.Commonsensemedia.orgwillbeusedasaresourcefor
studentstoexplorewithguidanceonceaweekduringtheir30-minutestudyhall
periods.
d. Havingintroducedthistopicinclass,teacherswillalsokeepaneyeonrecentevents
andsharewiththeclassadditionalexamplesduringlunchandotherlessstructured
timesinordertoaugmentandsolidifystudenttake-aways.
