seminar on
TEACHING ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY
PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICES

History is the most debated and argued subject not only in architectural
curriculum but in general,. 'What is History? , How to teach History ? has been
intriguing minds of scholars since ancient times. Interpretive skills are very
important in understanding History. Hence history teaching faces its own set of
challenges in Architectural education.

In architectural profession, teaching history is more challenging as the history

teacher does not undergo any special training desired for better
understanding . One has to be well read as well as well acquainted with the
philosophical positions and needs to possess good interpretive skills.

With the number of architectural schools increasing, most of the time fresh
teachers are given the responsibility of teaching history who, seldom are
passionate about the subject and need to fine tune their history teaching skills.

Digital-technological advances have opened up new avenues in

educational field that compel us to rethink our history teaching strategies.

Indian architectural history deserves special attention, we as architects are

directly dealing with it and quite often take inspiration to direct interventions in
it. When oriental philosophy is strongly emerging in heritage conservation
practices as a school, architects at large are still ignorant about the subtleties
of the same. A number of scholars have done pioneering research about
Indian architecture in recent times. Number of foreign scholars among it is also
noticeable.

This seminar aims to introduce aspiring architectural history teachers the

aspects of understanding history, different philosophical positions adopted by
Historians and to equip them with various skills that will enhance and add on to
their teaching capabilities.
