Elizabeth Wangeci Chege of Kenya Green Building Society appointed Regional Vice- Chair of World Green Building Council’s Africa Regional Network

Elizabeth has been appointed for her leadership in the green building movement and dedication to improving the sustainability of buildings, both in Kenya and at the regional level.

Terri Wills, CEO of the World Green Building Council, said: “Whilst climate change is a global challenge, the solutions to it are often local and regional. Championing green building at these levels through our regional networks is therefore essential in order to deliver on our mission of green buildings for everyone, everywhere.

“Elizabeth has been a true champion of green building across Africa, and her leadership as Vice- Chair will help to strengthen the network of Green Buildings Councils in the region.”

The Kenya Green Building Society was formed to lead the transformation of thebuilt environment in Kenya toward environmentally sustainable buildings, promoting a healthy and efficient built environment.

To date, in Kenya, there are more than 34 buildings targeting green building certification in Kenya with

certified buildings targeting savings on utilities both water, electricity and sewerage. WorldGBC’s Africa Regional Network comprises eight Green Building Councils: Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.

By 2050, Africa will be home to an estimated 1.3 billion more people than it is today (more than half of the world’s projected population growth of 2.4 billion people) which means a huge surge in demand for buildings – with 80 per cent of those that will exist in 2050, yet to be built.

But this also presents an opportunity to build right from today, and create green jobs, skills and training, and sustainable growth through widespread green building. Green Building Councils in WorldGBC’s Africa Regional Network are responding to these challenges and opportunities on the ground.

Rehema Muniu - Chief Executive Officer, Kenya Green Building Society

New CEO for the Kenya Green Building Society

“The key drivers of green building in Africa are rising energy costs, the industry’s Green Star rating system, competitive advantages and legislation. The increase in green building has a lot to do with ecological factors and even more to do with economic factors— operational costs and stakeholder demands.”

Those were the sentiments of Rehema Muniu, the new CEO for the KGBS. Rehema was appointed in mid July following a rigorous process of vetting.

As a highly driven and successful executive with 20+ years of experience in driving successful business operations and enhancing corporate productivity, she posseses a wide range of knowledge in communication and research industries within Pan Africa.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, Public Administration and Economics

According to Rehema, The future of green building is set to increase as awareness and data becomes available .She believes that the future of green building is data driven.

“If we make data gathering we also make greening the building industry more accessible. In fact, it is becoming more important because the future of green building is not rating systems. I believe that performance is the future of all rating systems and that data is the greatest truth teller. The question is what kind of data.

Today, we can use real data from meters to measure performance and provide a score that is based on metrics and algorithms. This is a natural next step to stay up-to-date. But we need to keep pushing to find ways to measure the outcomes.

The coolest thing about data is it tells you where you are. The coolest thing about a score is it tells you how you compare to others. Our basic approach is to continue to develop rating systems but also to focus on using technology to measure the results of the rating systems. In this way we expect that the future will allow greater flexibility to get to market transformation.”

Accelerating Building Efficiency

The Building Energy Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) assists sub-national governments in speeding up the process of adoption of best-practice policies and implementation of building efficiency projects, with the goal of doubling the rate of energy efficiency improvement in the building sector by 2030. Kisii County is the first county that has signed up to the process followed by Nairobi County.

The BEA process of engagement in a city includes support for:

- Assessing and prioritizing locally-appropriate policies and actions

- Implementing actions, through matching needs with expertise, resources and tools

- Tracking action and documenting progress, and sharing lessons learned

This June, KGBS board members worked with a team from the Urban Planning unit at the Nairobi county lead by Rose Muema, Chief Officer in charge of Planning, Urban Development and Housing to develop green building guidelines for the county.
