Experiment No. 5

CAPACITOR IN AC CIRCUIT

I. Objectives:

The activity aims to investigate the voltage and current relationship in an inductive circuit
with AC applied. This also aims to study the frequency to the current and capacitive
reactance.

Intended Learning Outcomes(ILOs):

The students shall be able to:

1. Examine how frequency affects the current in a capacitor.

2. Verify the phase relationship of voltage and current in a capacitive circuit.

II. Discussion/ Background of the Experiment/ Concept and Theories

The Amount of charge stored by a capacitor determines the voltage across it. Therefore, the rate
at which the charge is moved (Q/t = current) from one plate to the other determines the rate at
which the voltage changes. When the current is changing at its maximum rate (at the zero
crossings), the voltage is at its maximum value (peak). When the current is changing at its
maximum rate (zero at the peaks), the voltage is at its minimum value (zero). This relationship is
illustrated in the figure. As you can see, the current peaks occur a quarter of a cycle before the
voltage peaks. Thus the current leads the voltage by 90.

III. Resources/ Materials Used

Feedback AC and DC Basics 12-301

IV. Procedure:

1. Connect 3.5V (rms) AC source across the circuit as shown.

2
2. Measure the voltage across the 1uF- capacitor and the current through it.
VL=_________________
IL=_________________
3. Connect channel 1 of the oscilloscope across points 1 and 2 (i.e. across the capacitor)
and channel 2 to the 100 resistor.
4. Draw the corresponding waveforms, the voltage across the capacitor and the voltage
across the 100 resistor. Assume that the voltage across the 100 resistor is,
determine the phase relationship between voltage and current in an inductive circuit.
5. Connect the circuit as shown below. Measure the voltage across the inductor and the
current through it.

6. Repeat procedure 5 by adjusting the frequency to 500Hz, 800Hz, 1200Hz, and

1600Hz.
7. Plot a graph of capacitive reactance against the frequency.
