EDU/13/LIS/00478 COURSE: 2202 INFORMATION RETRIEVAL QUESTION PROBLEMs ASSOCIATED WITH SEARCHING INFORMATION IN NIGERIA INRODUCTION The Internet is the global system of interconnected computers networks that use the internet of protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. It is a network of network that has consist of private,public academic,business and government network of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The internet carries an extensive range of information resources and services such as the inter-linked hypertext document and application of world wide web (WWW) electronic mail,telephony and file sharing.
The internet gegan in 1969 as ARPANET (Advanced
Resources Project Agency Network) military intelligent and research with universily sources. The internet has since the 1990s became a widely used civilian tool for communication, research, entertainment, education, advertisement etc.( Hinson 2006). The internet accessibility and use in Nigeria started in 1991 when a few pioneering groups began after limited email services (Eshekels Association, 2011). In July 1995 the regional information network for Africa (RINAF) commenced internet services at computer sciences department of Yaba College of Technology and through the Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST). In a collaborative effort with Rose Clayton Nigeria limited (Adami 2005) the internet services at that time included email, telnet. Internet users had to pay for both accsess and usage for sending and receiving email messages with the billing of message being sent.most of the internet services providers (ISPs)then operated as a store forward messaging system using linux Unix copy protocol (UUCP) (Adami 2005). The world wide web (WWW) became available in Nigeria In 1996, while full internet services became available in 1998 and number of Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) licensed internet service providers rose to over 150 by 2001 (Adami 2005). With an estimated total population of 140 millionpeople (National Population Commission) 2006. According to Nwagu el-al (2009) the internet services as sources of information for literature reviews, authors search subject search, and research.
Problem associated with searching information in
Nigeria.
1. Pervasive power outages;
The power situation in the country has further compounded the woes of the few ISPs and cyber cages operating in the country. With very unreliable power in the country operators are left with no choice but to acquire and rely constantly on generators expanding huge gallons of fuels daily,in order to distribute internet to offices, homes or cafes for subscribers. 2. Low-speed and time consuming internet Out of 10 million estimated internet users in Nigeria broadband users are few. High speed broadband receivers fiber optic cables. The situation should, however improve as there are a number of projects underway to connect African countries with the rest of the world through undersea cables which is hoped wil eventually lead to affordability and fast speed. 3. High cost of getting internet Internet doesnt come cheep in Nigeria. As it stand it is arguably the pressure of the rich who often have acess from their homes. One of the reasons for the high cost of connecting to the internet is the cost involved in using satelight due to lack of cable infrastructure most internet traffic in Nigeria often homes need to be routed by setlight via North America and Europe website. 4. High level of ICT illiteracy Although it must be said that ICT knowlegede in Nigeria is growing and being embraced, yet, there remain a large majority of rural population that have not seen firsthand the immense benefits of the internet. 5. Increasing competition Traditional internet services providers are beginning to face increasing competition from internet services offered by mobile operators. Meaning, the introduction of (3G) services in the country has enabled many Nigerians in access the internet through mobile devices. Meanwhile, access to telecom services is not necessarily releint on new cabling while only 4 percent of people in the country have fixed telephones lines. 30 percent have cell phones.
6. Lack of internet ready PCs
Nigerians are not provided with internet ready PCs as done in the advanced countries.though Zinox computers a computer manufacturers and leading (CDMA) telecom operators are joining forces to make this available and other efforts are currently being made with much of this still remain in doldrums. Conclusion The Federal Republic of Nigeria commonly referred to as Nigeria it is in west Africa bordering Benin in the west,Chad and Cameroon in the east ,and Niger in the north lies on the gulf of
