Farrelly exhibition moves mountains
Mountains are in Ulla Farrellys blood. The visual art-
ist is a former ski instructor, avid backcountry hiker and
a keen observer. Farrellys Mountain Mythology series,
which honours mountains and valleys in the Kootenays
and Rocky Mountains, is now on display at the Nelson
Public Library.
Farrelly works en plein air painting outdoors in an
effort to capture the essence of her subjects. She began
her artistic exploration of the mountain landscape with
pointillist renderings. Sitting in the landscape, breath-
ing the air, watching the changing clouds and light reveal
different aspects of the landscape made me pay attention
while drawing down the mountain one point at a time,
she says. From there, Farrelly created high contrast black
and white drawings, making the landscape come alive in
shifting line and mass.
Most recently her explorations have taken her into
watercolour for its soft, dreamlike quality. I took a num-
ber of veil painting workshops with art therapist Gordon
Skuse in Nelson in the 1990s and through creative explo-
ration in these workshops I discovered a deeper under-
standing of myself, the element of water and the mysteries
of colour, Farrelly explains.
This influence is evident in the sensitive rendering of
line, light and shadow within a pastel palette. A gradu-
ate of Kootenay School of the Arts in Mixed Media and
Metal, Farrelly has also worked in a variety of media
including printmaking, mixed media, jewelry and
bronze, video and photography. The Library exhibition,
which also includes laser cut landscape interpretations in
wood, runs through August.

vision for the future of the filmmaking and screen-based

lective path forward for the screen based industry in the
Kootenays. September 22 25 Kinesis will offer four days
of film and content screenings, professional development
workshops and networking opportunities to the screen
based community.
What Is Kinesis? Kinesis will focus on sharing Kootenay
voices, stories and experiences that resonate with people
who understand this way of life over four days of screen-
ings, networking opportunities, professional development
sessions and a daylong open space meeting. Attendance
at Kinesis daily screenings is open to film professionals
and enthusiasts alike. After almost a year of consulting
numerous local film professionals Kinesis was born from
their desire for an event to network and connect with
other professionals located in the Kootenay region. This
formative event will set the stage for the Kootenay Screen
Based Industry(KSBI) as we strive for growth.
Why Is Kinesis A Prologue To The Future? Through
Kinesis, event participants will have the chance to bring
their ideas to the conversation, forging a collective path
for the screen based industry in our region. It is an oppor-
tunity to bring our many skills, ambitions, thoughts and
stories together, and to plan the next steps for the develop-
ment of a thriving Kootenay film and screen-based sector

Ready, Set, Read! Kootenay Book
Weekend returns
Summer is back in the Kootenays and for avid readers
there is no greater pleasure than a good book and an icy
drink on the patio.
The Kootenay Book Weekend is celebrating its 14th
annual event and book lovers can discover great summer
reads as they prepare for this three day book-loving cel-
ebration in the fall. This years event is September 22 24
at the Best Western Baker Street Inn in Nelson. Registra-

books that will be the focus of the weekend.
Inspired by true events, The Girl Who Wrote in Silk
is by Washington author Kelli Estes. This story weaves
between modern day and a century earlier, telling the tale
of a woman exploring her late aunts island estate when
she finds an elaborately stitched piece of fabric hidden
in the house. As she peels back layer upon layer of the
secrets it holds, she discovers the story of Mei Lein, a
young Chinese girl mysteriously driven from her home
a century before.
A Man Called Ove was a blockbuster bestseller in Swe-
den for author Frederik Backman and since its transla-
tion into English has won over readers internationally
with its warm story of a curmudgeon who perhaps is not
all that he seems. Goodreads says when a chatty young
couple with two chatty young daughters move in next
door and accidentally flatten Oves mailbox, it is the lead-
in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats,
unexpected friendship and the ancient art of backing up a
U-Haul. Sounds like a perfect summer read.
The Gift of Rain is the debut novel of Malaysian author
Tan Twan Eng. Set during the tumult of World War II
on the lush island of Penang, he tells the tale of Philip
Hutton, a young British-Chinese man caught in the
tangle of wartime loyalties and deceits. With lots of rich
historical detail, this book promises to be the perfect
escape to another world, one where courage and loyalty
between friends is tested as war rages around them in
occupied Malaysia.
The featured author and special guest for Book Week-
end 2017 is Invermere writer Elinor Florence. She will
join the conference for an author talk Sunday, September
24. Her book, Birds Eye View, is the story of a bright, ide-
alistic young woman who joins the air force after her town
in Saskatchewan becomes a British Commonwealth Air
Training Base during World War II. Rose Jolliffe travels
to England to be trained as an aerial photographic inter-
preter, working with intelligence officers at a converted
mansion. She spies on the enemy from the sky, watching
the war unfold through her stereoscope. Wartime history,
action, drama, mystery and romance are all packed into
this Canadian bestseller.
