ASSIGNMENT-I
Course Code : MEE2005 Course Name: Heat Transfer
Course Faculty : Prof. S. Senthur Prabu
Do all the questions and submit on or before 18th August 2017
Late submission will not be accepted.

1. Derive an expression for steady state temperature distribution in a hollow cylinder with heat
sources which vary according to the linear relation, q a br . With q the generation rate per
unit volume. The inside and outside temperatures are T = Ti at r = ri and T = To at r = ro.

2. A thick steel slab ( = 7800 kg/m3, c = 480 J/kgK, k = 50 W/mK) is initially at 300 oC and is
cooled by water jets impinging on one of its surfaces. The temperature of the water is 25 oC, and
the jets maintain an extremely large, approximately uniform convection coefficient at the
surface. Assuming that the surface is maintained at the temperature of the water throughout the
cooling, how long it take for the temperature to reach 50 oC at a distance of
25 mm from the surface?

3. Derive the general three dimensional unsteady state heat conduction equation for an isotropic
slab with internal heat generation using a neat labelled sketch. Simplify the obtained equation to
Poissons equation, Fouriers equation and Laplace equation.

4. Derive the general three dimensional unsteady state heat conduction equation with internal
heat generation for cylindrical coordinates with neat lebelled sketch. Simplify the obtained
equation to Poissons equation, Fouriers equation and Laplace equation.

5. An egg with mean diameter of 40 mm and initially at 20oC is placed in a boiling water pan for
4 minutes and found to be boiled to the consumer's taste. For how long should a similar egg for
same consumer boiled when taken from a refrigerator at 5oC. Take the following properties for
egg: k=10 W/moC, density=1200 kg/m3, specific heat=2 kJ/kgoC, and heat transfer coefficient =
100 W/m2oC. Use lumped heat analysis.

6. A furnace wall is made up of three layers of thicknesses 250 mm, 100 mm, and 150 mm with
thermal conductivities of 1.65, k and 9.2 W/moC respectively. The inside is exposed to gases at
1250oC with a convection coefficient of 25 W/m2oC and the inside surface is at 1100oC. The
outside surface is exposed to air at 25oC with convection coefficient of 12 W/m2oC. Determine:
(i) The unknown thermal conductivity 'k' (ii) The overall heat transfer coefficient (iii) All surface
temperatures.

7. The inside of a furnace wall is at 1000C and with the existing wall of material with thermal
conductivity of 1.7 W/mK looses 2.5 kW/m2 when the outside is exposed to convection to air at
30C with h = 27 W/m2K. Determine the wall thickness. Additionally 75 mm thickness of
insulation with k = 0.15 W/mK is added on the inside. The furnace wall temperature and the
surrounding temperature and convection coefficient remain unchanged. Determine the reduction
in heat flow and reduction in the outside surface temperature. Also find the overall heat transfer
coefficient and the temperature gradient in each layer.

8. A long 20 cm diameter cylindrical shaft made of stainless steel 304 comes out of an oven at
uniform temperature of 600oC. The shaft is then allowed to cool slowly in an environment
chamber at 200oC with an average heat transfer coefficient of 80 W/m2oC. Determine the
temperature at the center of the shaft 45 minutes after the start of the cooling process. Also
determine the heat transfer per unit length of the shaft during this time period.

9. A sphere 30 mm in diameter initially at 800 K is quenched in a large bath having a constant

temperature of 320 K with a convection heat transfer coefficient of 75 W/m2K. The thermo-
physical properties of the sphere material are: = 400 kg/m3, c = 1600 J/kgK, k = 1.7 W/m-K.
(a) Calculate the time required for the surface of the sphere to reach 415 K.
(b) Determine the energy (J) that has been lost by the sphere during the process of cooling to the
surface temperature of 415 K.

10. The body of an electric motor is 360 mm in diameter and 240 mm long. It dissipates 360 W
of heat and its surface temperature should not exceed 55oC. Longitudinal fins of 15 mm
thickness and 40 mm height are proposed. The heat transfer coefficient is 40 W/m2K when the
ambient air is at 30oC. Determine the number of fins required, if thermal conductivity of the fin
material is 40 W/m-K.

11. The rate of heat generation in a solid rod is given by q qo 1
R
where R is the radius of the rod and qo is a constant. Derive an expression and value for the
temperature at the centre of the rod of 20 cm diameter having k = 40 W/mK, if the temperature at
the surface of the rod is 75 0C and the constant qo is 5.25 x 106 W/m3.

12. A large block of steel (k=45 W/m-K, =1.410-5 m2/s) is initially at a uniform temperature of
35oC. The surface is exposed to a heat flux (a) by suddenly raising the surface temperature to
250oC and (b) through a constant heat flux of 3.2105 W/m2. Calculate the temperature at a depth
of 25 mm after a time of 0.5 min for both these cases.

13. What do you mean by critical radius of insulation? Deduce an expression for critical radius
of insulation of a cylinder and a sphere.
