Purpose of Study
Introduction

Peasant farming is one of the more predominant types of farming in the developing world. As
such, in some places the farming techniques and strategies have evolved to suit particular socio-
economic conditions and have farming characteristics that vary from the norm.

Aranguez farms have been providing market produce for Trinidad and Tobago for many years
and are often referred to as the bread basket of the nation. The farms are generally all located in
one area (see map 1), which is subdivided into plots which the farmers use. Therefore, this
researcher is interested to find out if this unique arrangement has affected the traditional
characteristics of peasant farming in this area.

The purpose of the study therefore is to examine the characteristics of peasant farming in
Aranguez.
