1 Benefits of Saving Electrical Energy

Nowadays, every single thing in this world is mostly depended on electrical energy. It is

almost impossible to live a normal life without the existence of electricity. It has become a need

than something you desire. Unfortunately the energy we have been using has its ending if it is not

used and maintained properly. To make it worse, there are many people who have overused and

wasted the electricity, giving a negative impacts to the world we live in. Saving energy using

simple actions such as turning off the lights when not in use and set your air-conditioner to a proper

temperature can provide you and the environment bundle of benefits.

Firstly, you should save electricity because by saving electrical energy, it will help USM

to save money. The amount of money the university spend to pay for electricity bills each month

will drop tremendously if all of us save the energy together. By turning off the lights when they

are not used and set the average temperature for air-conditioners will do a lot of favors to protect

USM from wasting millions of ringgit per months for paying up the bills. In America, the

consumers have seen massive savings from energy efficiency programs. Federal appliance

standards implemented since 1987 save consumers nearly $370 billion USD in lower utility bills

as of 2012, and are projected to save another $570 billion USD through 2020.

Apart from that, the benefits go beyond the savings seen by those who buy efficient

products such as energy-save bulbs (LED lights) or upgrade their places and institutions by using

energy saved electrical appliances such as air-conditioner with inverter that will control the energy

used. The local economy benefits when consumers buy other goods and services with the money
they saved on their bills. Plus, less power generation can lead to better air quality and improved

public health. So, by saving the energy, especially the electrical energy will help us to save a lot

of money, and the money saved can be used for other useful purposes. There are few real world

examples that benefits from saving electrical energy. The first one is the Energy efficiency

investments of $440 million from 2009-2011 as part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, a

cap-and-trade program for carbon dioxide emissions from power plants among nine states in the

Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions, are expected to add $1.6 billion in economic value and create

16,000 net job-years (a measure of employment that means the creation of one job for one year)

in the region through 2021.

Secondly, the benefits of saving electrical energy is, it gives positive effects on our

environment. Most prominent sources of electrical energy is produced by fossil fuels such as oil,

natural gas and coal. These sources of energy are usually found deep buried in earth and most of

them require drilling and mining to be extracted. These processes will put our environment at risks,

such as contamination from mining operations, drilling leaks or explosions. The fossil fuels are

burned to create electricity. For instance, the coal is used to heat boilers which power turbines and

create electricity. Unfortunately this process will emit greenhouse gas.

In America, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, they can benefit the economy by saving

businesses and consumers money and improving public health. There is a finding of a new

study, Seeing Is Believing, which analyzes opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the

United States. The research examined five areas which include electric generation, electricity
consumption, passenger vehicles, natural gas, and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). All of these

together account for 55 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. In each case, the researchers

found that reducing emissions can yield significant economic benefits even before they factor in

the advantages of avoiding drought, sea level rise, and other climate change impacts. By reducing

the usage of electrical energy, the amount of electricity that needs to be produced will drop, thus

will decrease the greenhouse gas emissions. This will give a positive impacts on our environment.

Thirdly, by using less energy, it will also help to reduce the amount of transportation

needed to move fossil fuels from the drilling or mining site. The types of transportation used are

varied from trucks, planes, trains and boats. These vehicles need fuels to be able to work. The most

common form of fuel for these vehicles is crude oil in the form of gasoline. When gasoline is

burned to create energy, greenhouse gas emissions are created. These gases, such as carbon dioxide

and methane, trap heat in the atmosphere, contributing to global problems such as climate change,

states the Environmental Protection Agency. So, by using less energy, it means that less

transportation needed to transport the resources to be processed.

Last but not least, by saving electrical energy the mankind can benefits by being healthier

resulted from a cleaner environment were living in. aside from that, the act of turning of the lights

earlier at night will help to encourage people, especially children, to go to sleep earlier. Also, by

using less electricity to recharge the gadgets we have, we have more time with each other and we

have plenty of time to do real life activities with everyone around us.
