From the Vicarage
Over the next couple of months, I am going to be a stranger in a strange
land: Wetherby. As part of my ongoing training as a curate, I shall be
based at St James Church in Wetherby from mid-September to mid-
November. This will mean getting to know new congregations, new
colleagues, a new community, getting a feel for how that town ticks and
getting experience of how God is at work in a different place to where I
normally minister. But I am not leaving my role as curate here, merely
popping away for training purposes temporarily - and shall return soon!
The Bible is full of examples of people being sent to new places. While
were all called to serve God and neighbour wherever we live and work, it
is a consistent theme of the Bible for the people of God to go to new
places and take their faith with them. The people of Israels story, which
unfolds in the Old Testament, is one of journeying with God, including
journeys into exile and slavery and back. In the New Testament we see,
in Jesus coming to earth to live among us, that the very nature of God is
to go, to reveal Gods very self in the middle of human culture, and
reveal truth in ways which are comprehensible to us. Ours is an outward-
facing faith, and we are a people sent with a message of hope, challenge
and love for the whole world.
Over the summer, our communities have welcomed many tourists and
visitors, and I wonder how we appeared to them? When we go
somewhere new, or even somewhere we have visited before but which is
not where we live our daily lives, we see things differently.
In our daily lives, it is often easy for time to pass and for the familiar to go
unnoticed. As the routines of the school term resume, and as the rhythm
of life: market days, Sundays, clubs, events and so on keep rolling along,
it is good to pause and try to look at life with fresh eyes, as if we were
merely visiting. Church services provide one way to do this. We are all
strangers in a strange land: exiles from the perfection of life in God
forever, the heavenly party which Jesus invites us to, where we really
belong. When we gather with others to worship God, one thing we are
doing is seeking a refreshed vision of life. We ask God to move in our
hearts and in our communities to make our corner of Gods own county
of Yorkshire that little bit more like Gods heavenly kingdom by giving us
the ability to look at our community and our own lives with Gods eyes.
We need that fresh look at things every day, being part of Gods great
work of renewing the earth and a reminder that we are sent with the
Good News that, through Jesus, we can be sure that Gods love wins.
I shall return in late November, hopefully having been challenged by my
change of scene and perhaps seeing the communities served within the
3
Masham Group of Parishes through fresh eyes. Your challenge, should
you wish to accept it, is to do that every day as you pray Thy kingdom
come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. May you increasingly
see where God is at work around you, where those glimpses of Gods
kingdom have already come, and learn how God is calling you to make
your corner of Gods earth that little bit more like heaven. Amen.
Reverend Nick Morgan

Pilgrim
Life is a journey. It begins when youre born. It ends when you die. You
dont need to be a Christian to know this. But as we get older we do know
there is probably more road behind us than ahead of us.
So what difference does being a Christian make? Well, the journey of life
that ends in death becomes a holy pilgrimage that ends in life. Christians
believe that in Jesus, God has walked this earth before us, and that with
Jesus as our companion and guide we can travel through life differently.
We can live and travel as pilgrims. We set our sights on Gods kingdom of
justice and peace; and as we journey home to God, the pathway of our life
becomes more meaningful and joyful, and the world a better place.
Pilgrim is a course designed to help you discover this Christian way of life.
It unpacks the basic message and teaching of the Christian faith, and also
shows you how to pray and how to live like Jesus. It does this in a way that
is reflective and conversational. No one will force the pace. But this course
will change the perspective of your life; it might also change its direction.
You wont be able to find out everything about the Christian faith in any one
course. But through the Pilgrim course material you will be able to reflect
on some of the great texts that have been particularly significant to people
since the earliest days of the Church.
One of the greatest treasures of the Christian faith is the prayer we know as
the Lords Prayer. It has been said that the whole of the Christian gospel
the whole of the good news is in the Lords Prayer if we truly
understand it.
This autumn there will be two courses running looking at the Lords Prayer
one daytime and one evening.
Wednesdays 20th & 27th September, 11th, 18th & 25th October & 1st
November. 1.45 p.m. at The Vicarage, Rodney Terrace, Masham. Further
details from David Cleeves on 01765 689255.
5
Thursday evenings at 7.30 p.m. starting on 14th September at 6
Westholme Road, Masham. This will be the first meeting subsequent
venues may change. Further details from Jim Heaton on 01765 688093.

Pet Service Celebrating Gods Creation. St. Marys, Masham

Sunday 10th September @ 10.45 a.m.
This is a wonderful service to which people are invited to bring pets,
cats, dogs, rabbits, a fish in a tank, a horse whatever!
Animals and pets will be blessed at the service whether it's the pets who
share your everyday lives now or those who people have dearly loved and
lost, all will be blessed at the service.

Confirmation
Confirmation is about becoming a committed member of the local and
worldwide Christian family; it marks the point in the Christian journey at
which you affirm for yourself the faith into which you have been baptized
and your intention to live a life of committed discipleship. This affirmation is
confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the confirming
bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy
Spirit to enable you to live in the way of Jesus.
Preparation sessions encourage candidates to grow in their Christian faith
through prayer, reflection, studying the Bible, participating actively in the life
of the church and demonstrating their faith in their communities.
Any adult or young person interested in attending a confirmation
preparation group please speak to David Cleeves (01765 689255).
Attending the group does not commit you to eventual confirmation - it is an
opportunity to explore the faith with the possibility of confirmation at the end
of the course.
