II. Translate!

1. Kada smo stigli u hotel, bili smo izvan sebe jer nije bilo nikakvih popratnih sadraja.
2. Na groblju je stajao natpis: POLAGANJE VIJENACA NA VLASTITU ODGOVORNOST. Kakva
je to neslana ala, pitala se.
3. All things considered, most of our efforts are going straigh down the drain, and our
pleas are falling on the deaf ears of the Chancellor.
4. I felt I had to take issue with some of his conclusions, but then again, I didn't want the
others to think that I was showing off.

I.
1. - placing flowers on his grave, It is a decent translation, but in the sentence in which I found it
the tense wasnt the same in the translation (in the original it was koji su poloili, so the more
appropriate solution would probably be something like who placed the flowers on his grave
- leave a flower, In the context of the sentence in which I found it, I think it works fine, the only
difference is that in Croatian the flowers are in plural form, whereas in the translation it i sin
singular.
-leave flowers, Similar to the previous example, except that here the form (plural) is the same
both in the original and the translation. A good solution.
-laid flowers, probably the most literal translation, but I think it works just fine
-laid/placing wreath/s, the solutions for vijenac (wreath) are pretty much the same ones as the
above-listed translations for flowers

2. amenities, out of the three possible solutions I think this one is probably the best one (also
context-wise)

-side events, not really the same meaning, not a very good solution
-support facilities, it may seem that this is a similar case to the previous translation solution, but
actually this one fits the context (although it doesnt mean exactly the same thing as in the
original)

3. genuinely distraught, ok solution in that context

- besides herself, this one would work just fine if it said something like she was beside herself
with grief(or whatever), but just besides herself sounds strange in English I think

-just out for yourselves, a terrible, terrible solution. This means a completely different thing

-upset, not bad, but neither is it very good. Works in that context

-outside yourself, again a very bad solution, and also a literal translation

-at ones wits end, works fine (meaning is a little bit different, but its still ok)

-out of it, an ok solution context-wise

- out of my mind, good one

- freaked out, its ok

-rolled up, also ok

-blown away, not the same thing, but context-wise its ok

4.- bad joke, a decent solution

- great joke, well neslana ala as far as I know is not really a good joke, so this is a bad solution

- prank, its ok, maybe even better than a bad joke, because it doesnt necessarily have to be
bad

-horseplay, a little bit different, but ok

-a hoax, a different meaning, not a good solution

-poor joke, similar to a bad joke

- practical joke, depends on the context, sometimes it could work

5.- at ones own risk, a good solution

- at their own personal responsibility, its almost a literal translation, not sure if it works or not
though

- at his own recognizance, not the same thing entirely, but ok

-assume full responsibility, it works

-at your own discretion, context-wise this is a decent solution

6. sve je bilo uzalud, since Croatian doesnt have an identical equivalent (for the idiomatic
meaning) this is a good paraphrase

- otjee u kanalizaciju, in this context where it literally means down the drain, It works

-uzaludni rad, a decent translation

-propasti, similar to the translation above

- baeno niz vodu/rijeku, I must correct myself, it seems this is the Croatian equivalent for the
idiomatic meaning, a good solution too

- pada u vodu, also a decent equivalent

- otii dovraga, the meaning is similar, so it works

7.- kad se sve uzme u obzir, a really good equivalent

- kad sve razmotrimo, same as the above

-sve u svemu, same as the above

-nakon svega, not as good as the examples above, but still ok

8. ne slau se s tim, works fine

- dovode u pitanje, not the same thing, but similar enough

-ne prihvaaju, same as the above

-raspravlja se, not the same thing, doesnt work

-prave problem, could work

9. priati u gluh telefon, a bit too literal, but ok

- ne vrijediti nita, works as a paraphrase meaning-wise

10. ali, a bit short, but works

-ali opet, probably the best solution

-s druge strane, works as a paraphrase of the meaning

-a i to, not really the same thing

-kad bolje razmislim, a decent solution

-pa, not the same thing

-ali ipak, a decent solution.
