Music festival keeps STARS flying high

Since its inception, after
the devastating 2013 Alberta
floods ripped through the
southern part of the province,
the Southern Alberta Music
Festival continues to attract
local talent and gain momen-
tum with bigger crowds and
more dollars being collected
to support a vital emergency
service STARS Air Ambu-
lance.
Now in its fifth year, the
two-day country, blues, and
rock and roll event continues
to grow in popularity expo-
nentially.
While the official tally is
unavailable for several more
weeks, this years festival
numbers appear to have ex-
ceeded last years turnout of
roughly 200 individuals. Fur-
thermore, the proceeds be-
ing donated to the charitable,
non-profit organization are
estimated to be in the ball-
park of $10,000, an increase
from the $7,000 contribution
in 2016.
Every year it gets bigger
and bigger, said Rochelle
Watt, marketing manager
with Aspen Crossing which
hosts the event. Its our way
of giving back to the commu-
nity and showing support.
Without community lives

that people dont know about
until they actually need that

is really critical to our suc-
cess and to us continuing to
serve the community.
STARS Air Ambulance was
founded by Dr. Greg Pow-
ell in 1985, more commonly
known back then as the Li-
ons Air Ambulance Service.
For more than three decades,
the emergency service has
grown to include bases in
Saskatchewan, Manitoba and
Alberta.
Last year alone, helicopters
took to the air for a total of
1,529 missions in Alberta.
As the average flight costs
$5,400 costs the patient
does not recoup fundrais-
ing efforts, such as those of

A passion for riding horses and help-
ing people with cancer-related illness-
es has turned into an annual marquee
event in Siksika Nation.
The third annual Blackfoot Crossing
Cancer Event is set to take place Aug.
26 on the banks of the Bow River, and
spots are filling up quickly.
While there isnt a limit for people
bringing their own horses or those who
wish to make the walk on their own
feet, the event only services three con-
firmed wagons up to this point, each
housing eight to 10 people.
The event was started by Rhonda
Leger, a local woman who has been
breast cancer-free for 12 years. She
combined her love of horseback riding
and the urge to help others in forming
this event that has raised over $4,200
for the Alberta Cancer Foundation in its
first two years of existence.
Rhonda wanted to hold a ride simi-
lar to the one they do up in Innisfail,
said event treasurer Stephanie Miller.
Its a great ride and a great way to sup-
port those affected by cancer.
The Innisfail ride goes Sept. 17 at the
Daines Rodeo Ranch and will be cele-
brating the 30th anniversary of the ride.
Registration for the local event opens
at 9 a.m., with the ride commencing
sometime after 10 a.m. The group will
head down to the Bow River in Sik-
sika Nation, just west of the Blackfoot
Crossing museum, for a prayer to start
the day. The start location of the ride
marks the same spot that Treaty 7 was
signed in 1877. The treaty was signed
between Queen Victoria and members
of the Blackfoot and First Nation band
members.
That spot is a focal point in our his-
tory and on this land, and we are thank-
ful that the people of Siksika allow us
to use it for this ride, said Miller.
It is at that same location where a
plaque was donated to commemorate
the signing. Also donated two years ago
was a cherry tree, where participants
tie a ribbon onto its branches as a way
to remember those who have passed
away due to cancer or currently live
with cancer in their bodies. This year,
a second cherry tree has been donated
and put alongside the original tree.
Shortly after the prayer and ribbon
tying, the ride will take off and last for
two and a half hours.
Upon return, there will be a silent
auction and 50-50 draw, with all pro-
ceeds going to the Alberta Cancer
Foundation.
For those riding, lunch will be pro-
vided after the walk and ride, and there
will be rest stops along the way for the
horses as well.
People are encouraged to sign up
each day leading up to the event. There
is a $25 registration fee for either the
wagon ride or solo ride on a provided
horse. Family rates are available, and
for anyone interested in just the meal,
each ticket is sold for $10.

The clock had just turned 2:15 a.m.
Pacific time when the gravitational wave
detector (interferometer) at the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Ob-
servatory (LIGO) in Hanford, Wash. be-
gan to shake, mimicking its counterpart
1,600 km away in Livingston, La.
At first, they moved slowly, then be-
came faster and faster before everything
went quiet again. That event, on Sept.
14, 2015, lasted less than half a second.
And while the world failed to take no-
tice of the phenomenon at hand, nearly
a thousand scientists, technicians, and
engineers around the world including
lead operator with Siksika roots Corey
Gray jumped to action, setting out to
prove the incidents authenticity over
the months to follow.
What the detectors exposed, coinci-
dentally on the 100th anniversary of Al-
bert Einsteins theory of relativity, were
gravitational waves passing through the
Earth the first detection in history and
the revelation of a revolutionary new
window into the cosmos.
By using Einsteins equations from
1915, scientists were able to determine
that those waves were the result of two
black holes swirling around each other,
reaching the speed of light before merg-
ing into one another for the creation of
a greater black hole. The event, which
occurred 1.3 billion years ago, caused
the surrounding space to curve, send-
ing out waves much like the ripple ef-
fect of a rock thrown into water. As the
waves travelled through the universe at
a distance of over one billion light-years

study in physics and astrophysics for fu-
ture scientists.
This really launches an entire new
field of astronomy, one of gravitational-
wave astronomy, not your ordinary elec-
tromagnetic astronomy, so its a brand
new field that has just begun, said
physicist Michael Landry, head of LIGO
Hanford Observatory.
The interest here, is that you have a
completely new and revelatory way of
interacting with the universe. To date,
all the astronomy is done with electro-
magnetic waves light and radio waves

Long drives lead to one-on-one duel at Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands week five featured
a mano a mano battle between two up-
and-coming bands with the screamo-
rock Youngbloods edging out punk-
rock band Alien Nation at Legends on
Aug. 10.
We didnt know what to expect, never
played here before, said Youngbloods
lead singer Kyle Hogan. We are pretty
stoked on the result.
The Youngbloods made the trek from
mately three years ago. After only one
show, the band decided to stay together
because they had so much fun, a big
part of the bands philosophy.
Its great that people liked it, we
dont really aim to impress people, said
Beres. Its kind of just showing people
what we do and what we have fun at.
Alien Nation is also a four-person
band from Strathcona County with a lot
of youth and passion as every member
is 18 or 19 years old. However, despite
their youthfulness and the travel in-
volved, they didnt let it stand in their
pelin cover. Many artists draw on their
own experience to write music. Alien
Nation lead singer Baker drew inspi-
ration from his battle with depression
which led to the song The Call which
the band performed.
I wrote that song in hopes that it
could assist and help somebody else
going through a rough time, like I did,
said Baker.
The scoring system for Battle of the
Bands is divided into four areas: origi-
nality, musical skill, stage performance
and audience integration. Each band is
rated on a scale of one to 10. The total
scores arent released.
The band with the highest total ad-
vances to the final round against the
other Round 1 winners on Aug. 25 for
$1,500 in prize money, a spot at the Can-
ada 150 Music Festival on Aug. 26 and
a place co-hosting a radio program on
95.1 Golden West Radio.
The final week of the opening round
of Battle of the Bands is Aug. 17 at Leg-
ends.

ing the Alberta 55 Plus Summer
Provincials Aug. 10 to 12 in Cal-
gary.
And several brought home
some hardware for their efforts.
Vikki Hanson was able to
bomb down the long, straight
fairways at Fox Hollow Golf
Course during her gold medal-
winning performance in golf
Aug. 10 and 11.
Personally, it wasnt that big
of a deal for me. I had more fun
meeting new people and playing
golf in nice weather. The medal
I won is just a mark on a page
for me, said Hanson, who was
competing in the 55 plus age
category.
Hanson played under her
handicap, shooting an 84 on the
first day, followed by an 86 in
the final.
Several of the par fours were
long. I am a bomber, not a put-
ter, so I was able to reach the
green in two shots. I just wish
I had a few less two- and three-
putts, said Hanson.
Hanson was a volunteer when
the Provincials were in Strath-
more two years ago. A member
of the Strathmore Golf Club for
over 35 years, she still golfs as
often as possible, even when she
is living in Arizona during the
winter months.
These games were a great op-
portunity to get outside, meet
new people and have fun while
doing it, said Hanson.
Strathmore hosted the provin-
cials in 2015, when swimmer
Susan Lust racked up a trio of
silver medals in her home pool.
Deciding to participate in Pro-
vincials once again, Lust one-
upped herself and took home
four silvers from this years in-
stallment.
She won the silver in the
50-metre backstroke and free-
style, 100m back and 4x25m re-
lay Aug. 11 at the Calgary Winter
Club.
It was nice for me to compete
here; I used to race and train in
this same pool 50 years ago. I
was really happy with the results
considering how long its been
since Ive competed. I felt like
I had to win medals for Strath-
more, said Lust. Its a good
thing that I still have big feet and
long arms.
There was still one event that
returned to Strathmore two years
later: the Strathmore and Dis-
trict Agricultural Society fields
housed slo-pitch tournaments
last weekend.
Lyaltas Max Huntley played
shortstop for the Drifters in the
65 plus category and captured
the silver medal.
It was really nice to play the
games so close to home. There is
a great feeling in the community
when you host an event like this.
They are still well-played games;
guys are competitive as heck to
a point. Then we become friends
again after the game, said Hunt-
ley.
The medal parade didnt end
there. Stephen Wiewel won a
pair of golds and a pair of silvers
in the pool, racing in the 50m
and 100m back and free.
Pete Greene sniped the silver
in the mens 85 plus category in
golf, when he logged an unoffi-
cial adjusted score of 74 and 76.
Event organizer Joss Binns
managed to save a couple shots
out of the rough and bunker,
shooting an 84 and 82 in the
mens 65 plus to earn the bronze.
Its all about the camaraderie
and enjoying the event with all
the competitors. Everyone was
really nice and it was nice to
catch up with the other swim-
mers once the races ended and
we all caught our breath, said
Lust.

ery two years.

The Thunder advanced to the playoffs following a nail-
biter of a seventh inning against the top team from Mani-
toba.
With the Thunder up 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh,
the Angels had runners on second and third with none
out.
Some nervous moments and stressful pitches allowed
the Thunder to hang onto the 8-6 win, placing them in
the medal round.
Our goal coming into the tournament was to place in
the top four. Once we pulled out that victory against the
Angels, we felt like we were rolling, so we changed our
goal to winning the whole thing, said Olson.
Bolstering the Thunders rotation at Westerns was Irma
ace Hannah Ratzlaff. With nine games in three days, the
Thunder needed another arm just to get through the
weekend. Ratzlaff responded by locking teams down in
relief twice and picking up a complete game win in the
round robin (9-1) against the Assiniboia Aces.
Hannah threw the ball very well. We needed her to
help take the load off our other two pitchers. We wouldnt
have reached the finals without her, said Olson.
The Thunder scored six runs in the fifth, capped off by
a three-run bomb by Krissy Boyd, to slide past the Mani-
toba Central Energy 6-3. Alex Mackey and Ratzlaff split
the pitching duties, as the Thunder doubled the Western
Magic 14-7. The Thunder won the tourney opener behind
a solid pitching performance by Ainsley Olson, who went
the distance for the 3-1 victory.
The lone Thunder blemish outside of the finals came to
the very same Fury, when they bested the Thunder 10-3
in the second game of the tourney.
We were just a different team the second time we
played them. We made mistakes in the field and they led
to the blowout, said Vince.
The girls did a great job realizing that an early loss
in the tourney wasnt going to sink our chances. They
bounced back and put it in the rearview mirror. It was a
great weekend to finish off a great season.

It was so hot and humid in there, it
was really taking my focus away from
the shooting. After the round, I took
some time to sit down and figure out
where I went wrong and what I could
improve on moving forward. I spoke
with my coaches and we agreed that I
was overthinking each shot and that I
needed to shoot the perfect shot each
time, said Walstra.
A cleared mind and steady hands
allowed Walstra to nearly shatter her
personal best on the second day of
shooting. Her 390.6 was three points
shy of her personal best and landed
her a two-day total of 769.9.
Unfortunately for the Strathmore
sniper, it also left her outside the Top
8, in 20th place. She needed to be in
the low 800s to advance.
Despite missing out on the medal
round, the fire only burns brighter in-
side Walstra.

the brave men and women who

anonymity for public scrutiny. Let
us recognize that the freedom to
make decisions affecting thousands
of people, carry with it tremendous
responsibility. Acceptance of
personal responsibility and
accountability requires courage.
The ones who step up, believing
they do not lack the strength to keep
their commitments, should rather
be treated with dignity. While it may
be fair to hold officials to a high
standard, may we not forget the
frailty of man. May we uphold these
men and women in prayer.

My teenage daughter recently
informed me that there is a new
popular trend online, to comment
God left us, in response to every
evil thing out there. What would be
much more accurate is to state that

Depending on whether we have
come to be accepting of any and
everything that is served up any
which way, or whether we maintain
the responsibility of choice in
continuing our search for truth
and wisdom, will be felt by the
generations to come. It is true,
each one of us live with the great
responsibility of influence.

Both growing up in Delia, they, along with their
dad, Geoff who coaches the peewee Reds
made the hour and a half drive each summer to
play for the Reds.
All those hours on the road have paid off,
though.
Saige, 18, just returned from the Senior Womens
Invitational Championships Aug. 3 to 6 in Wind-
sor, Ont. It marked the sixth time that she repre-
sented her province at the national level.
Alberta dumped Team B.C. 11-2 in the semifinal
Aug. 6 at Cullen Field to advance to the national
championship. Saiges cleat snagged the edge of
the dish as she slid into home, spraining the out-
side of her ankle and fracturing the inside. She
went on to finish with a .231 batting average for
the tourney, along with pitching two scoreless in-
nings, striking out one batter.
In the final, without Saige, Alberta fell 15-8 to
Team Ontario.
It was a ton of fun to win silver. It was a great
experience to play with those girls and I was able
to learn a ton from them, said Saige, who will
be attending the University of Lethbridge to study
biology and education next fall.
With Saige doing her best to help secure a silver
medal, she was forced to leave behind her regular
season team and her sister, as they chased their
own provincial title.
I talked to my sister and a few of the guys on
the team and was getting lots of updates. All year,
we wanted to win the last game of the season in
a provincial final, so it was awesome to see them
accomplish it, said Saige. I would have loved to
be there with them, but I was happy that they got
Darcee (l) and Saige Hall finally got to play on the same team
this year when they both suited up for the Strathmore midget
AA Reds. They have both played several times in national tour-
naments representing Alberta.

Her younger sister, Darcee, played an integral
role of the Tier II provincial champion winning
Reds. Playing against boys two and three years
older than her, she managed to drive in seven runs
in 12 games.
This was the first time I wasnt the only girl on
the team and it was the first time Saige and I got
to play on the same team, said Darcee, who was
a member of the 2016 bantam Tier I provincial
champion Reds.
Like most sibling combos that play the same
sport, the Halls like to push each other any chance
they get. In practice or in a game, they are always
competing against one another.
So you better believe that Darcee took note of
Saiges silver medal and put it in the back of her
mind.
Darcee has played with the provincial team for
the past five seasons and will be attending the
U16 bantam Girls Invitational Championship, Aug.
17 to 20 in Vaughn, Ont.
Its her passion for the sport and to prove people
wrong that has led her to national tournaments.
It can be tough sometimes, for a girl. It feels
like you have to work twice as hard to get the
same recognition as the other boys, but I dont
mind, Im playing a sport I love, said Darcee.

Funk leads Alberta to silver

The 50th Canada Summer Games had
a very strict curfew: quiet by 11 p.m.
with a campus-wide lockdown by 11:45
p.m.
Unless you were competing for a na-
tional championship.
Strathmores Caleb Funk was one of
the 12 volleyball members on Team Al-
berta which was down 2-0 to Team On-
tario in the gold medal game Aug. 12 at
the Investors Group Athletic Centre, in
Winnipeg, Man.
At that point, our match started late
because of the presentation for the
medals in the girls volleyball, said
Team Alberta head coach Brock David-
iuk. Down 2-0, we told our guys, lets
break curfew tonight and stay here as
long as it takes.
Ontario took the first set 25-23 and
stormed out to an early 8-2 lead in
the second set. Alberta battled back to
make it close, but dropped the second
set 25-22.
In the huddle before the third set,
there was no Win one for the Gipper
speech, just a realization of the task at
hand.
We knew that we could compete with
(Ontario), we just had a bad start to the
second set, said Funk. We watched
video of them from Florida and earlier
in the tournament, so we knew what to
expect. We also knew that all the work
with everything we have done over the
past two years with the provincial team
was coming down to this, and we didnt
want to let it go that easily.
Funk had just returned from the Fort
Lauderdale High Performance Champi-
onship tournament July 23, where they
placed 10th out of 24 teams, playing
eight games. Also in the same tourna-
ment was the Ontario squad, where Da-
vidiuk and his coaching staff were able
to gather some pre-tournament footage.
Coming into the Games, we had
a feeling it would be us and Ontario
meeting up in the final, said Davidiuk.
So when we did, we had plenty of vid-
eo and stats to help prepare us for what
we were going up against.
Alberta and Ontario locked horns
earlier in the round robin stage, in a
game where Funk took over and began
to rack up starters minutes.
The Albertans starting centre, Liam
Huth, sustained a concussion during
practice leading up to the Games and
the symptoms came back to him dur-
ing the first Ontario game. Funk had
been training all week, waiting for his
chance. When it presented itself, he ran
with it.
I had a meeting with Caleb before
the tourney and let him know that it
was between him and this other kid
for the second starting position. Caleb
took that opportunity and ran with it
in practice. He elevated our compete
level each practice and each drill, push-
ing himself and his other teammates to
get better. It was a huge advantage for
us, said Davidiuk. Then, when he was
called upon to play, he was more than
prepared to step in and perform. We
didnt miss a beat.
The Albertans dropped the round
robin match 3-1 to Ontario, then steam-
rolled the rest of the competition, fin-
ishing the round robin 4-1 with the
most points for, 417.
In the quarters, they manhandled
Team Saskatchewan 3-0 and cooked
Team Quebec 3-0 in the semis, setting
up the rematch with Ontario.
In the third set of the finals, Alberta
began to mount their comeback. They
took the third set easily 25-18 and

7 against Newfoundland and Labrador at the In-
vestors Group Athletic Centre.

The nerves were definitely going
in the fifth set, said Funk. The place
wasnt as packed as it was for the girls
game or earlier in our match because
it was getting late, but it still got loud.
The crowd was erupting after each
kill, dig and block, as the national title
was up for grabs.
Tied at 14, Ontario took over when
one of the youngest players in the tour-
nament, Cole Ketrzynski, powered a
pair of kills from the left side to capture
the gold medal.
While Ontario celebrated, Funk and
his teammates sat there and endured
one of the most difficult losses of his
career, coming back from down 2-0 and
playing in an extended fifth set.
It sucked to realize that everything
you did this summer and last summer
was over, said Funk. We came here
wanting to win gold and we didnt ac-
complish our goal.
Alberta never would have had the
chance to play for gold or force a fifth
set if it wasnt for Funks ability to step
into the starting lineup and produce
midway through the Games.
He was a monster for us, said Da-
vidiuk. He is able to process informa-
tion better than most kids. If you watch
him play and see the decisions he is
able to make and how he carries out a
game plan, you can see just how high
his volleyball IQ is. He improved a lot
over the summer.
Funk skipped the return flight with
his Alberta teammates and drove to
Saskatchewan to spend some time with
family, where he was able to decom-
press and look back on a crazy week
of volleyball.
It was an unreal week and we ac-
complished so much during our time at
the Games, said Funk. It was nice to
see us get better as the week went on
and made the gold medal game a great
game.
These days, Funk is getting his final
ducks in a row before he heads out
to the University of British Columbia
Okanagan campus Aug. 27, with the
Heat training camp opening up Aug.
