Greetings and Thank You!

It is great fun to continue to meet new people, lay and clergy, in the Oak Ridge District! The welcome
service and reception at Kern were very special. It was so uplifting to be greeted by friends and to be
welcomed by brand new friends. Folks have come by the office to get acquainted. Those serving on
committees have been gracious, helpful, and patient. Thank you for your kindness.

I went from the reception at Kern UMC to Fountain City UMC to attend the funeral of Bradley Gattis. It
was a huge gathering and quite a testimony to a young life that had a great impact on many others but a
life that ended too soon! We are broken-hearted at every remembrance of the pain this family bears in
these days after such tragedy. Please continue to pray for this family and for Jason as he grieves, even
when he comes back to work and begins to work with me and with the Oak Ridge District. I look forward
to having Jason at some of our future meetings. But as he wrote, he has taken on a new identity that of
a grieving father.

I look forward to our District Conference on September 10 at Kern Memorial UMC at 3:00pm. Pastors
and local church leaders should attend. But everyone is welcome. We will have a business session and a
time of worship. The business includes setting a budget for 2018, electing leaders, and electing at-large
members for the 2018 Annual Conference.

September will bring a return to routine for most of us. Maybe the pews or chairs will fill back up.
Maybe we can catch up on the budget. But I hope routine does not necessarily mean business as usual.
I hope the Holy Spirit brings a new passion to our hearts. I hope we feel the urgency to take our faith out
the doors of the church with us and to share our stories of how Jesus has changed us, walked with us, used
us to bless others, and gotten us through storms. I hope we can be excited about inviting unchurched to
accompany us to our church home. I hope our hearts grow more generous and our communities see us
in more places. I hope we reflect Jesus!

And finally, in this city, I pray for peace. Will you join me in praying for the church in the world and for
peace in the world. We are anxious about the future of both the church and the world. Jesus invites us to
be not anxious about tomorrow. May our prayers this day reflect a deep trust in the Living Lord.

MISSIONS FUNDRAISER AT BEAVER RIDGE POVERTY SIMULATION WORKSHOP
SUNDAY, AUGUST 27
Concord UMC
Have you ever wondered what is it like to live in dire pov-
erty, to never have enough money to pay the bills or buy
the essential items you need for your family? This simula-
tion will allow us to feel what it is like to walk in the shoes
of the working poor and unemployed for a month, to keep
food on the table, a roof over their head, pay utility bills and
find a job when life has thrown a curve.

All those who work in mission should join us, so we can

better understand the lives of our neighbors living at or be-
low the poverty line and see this issue from a new perspec-
tive. 2:30 - 6:30 pm, Concord UMC Gym, includes work-
shop & a light supper.
