METHODS:
Materials:
1 Bunsen burner
1 beaker
1 test tube holder
5 lab scoops
1 test tube rack
1 test tube brush
5 test tubes
5 jars containing various substances: Copper sulfate, Sodium chloride,
Sucrose, Zinc oxide and Copper Carbonate.
1 sample of Sulfur

Procedure:
Read all of the procedures before starting to heat the substances. Follow safety
procedures at all times.

1. Make sure that your group has all of the materials.

2. To ignite the Bunsen burner, use the striker and turn on the gas nozzle. If you are
having trouble lighting the Bunsen burner, turn off the gas nozzle and ask the
teacher for help. Once the Bunsen burner is lit, do NOT reach over the flame or
place flammables near the Bunsen burner.

3. Place one lab scoop of the first substance into a test tube. Cover the containers to
prevent a spill or contamination.

4. Make your initial observations. Examine the substance carefully before you heat it
and record your observations in the data table.

5. Attach the test tube holder near the mouth of the test tube. Remember that the glass
test tube will be hot when held over the flame, so place the holder securely before
you start heating it.
6. Angle the test tube away from the observers while heating it over the Bunsen
burner. Move the test tube continuously over the flame to heat the substance
evenly. Keep it over the heat for 1 minute. Pay attention to any changes that occur
while heating the substance and record your observations in the data table.

7. Place the test tube in the test tube rack to cool for 1 minute. After the substance
cools, make observations about changes in appearance of the substance since
heating it. Record your observations in the data table.

8. Empty the solid waste into the beaker marked solid waste. Liquid waste can be
washed down the sink with water.

9. Repeat steps #3-8 for the remaining substances.

10. When you finish testing all five substances, turn the gas nozzle off and clean your
station. Make sure all of the test tubes are cool before washing them. The test tubes
will break if put in cool water too soon. Use the test tube brush and water to clean
the test tubes thoroughly. Place the test tubes upside down in the beakers so that
the water can drain out of the test tubes.
