gases from top side of the piston to the underside.

4. What are the two types of piston rings?

Compression rings
Oil rings

5. What is the function of piston, connecting rod, crank shaft and cylinder head?

Piston The piston assembly transfers the force from the power stroke to the crankshaft
Connecting rod converts reciprocating motion of piston into rotary motion of crankshaft
Cylinder head it acts as a top cover to the cylinder block. The valves are placed in the
cylinder head in an overhead valve engine.
6. Write down the firing order a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engine.
4 cylinder engine firing order: 1-4-3-2

6 cylinder engine firing order: 1-5-3-6-2-4

7. What is the function of a spark plug?

The spark plug is a device to produce electric spark to ignite the compressed air-fuel mixture
inside the cylinder.
8. Write the different types of combustion chambering SI engine?
T-Head type, L- Head type, I- Head type, F- Head type.

QUESTION BANK
(MCQ & TWO MARKS WITH ANSWER & 14 MARKS)

11. What is the purpose of Piston in Engines?

Piston is fitted to cylinder to receive gas pressure and transmit the force to the connecting rod.
12. What is the function of Connecting rod?
Connecting rod transmits the piston load to the crank causing the crank to turn, thus converting
the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion of crankshaft.
13. Why compression ratio of petrol engines is low while diesel engines have high compression
ratio?
In petrol engine, the compressed air fuel mixture gets ignited by sparks produced by spark plug.
But, in case of diesel engine, the compressed air should attain very high temperature in order to
ignite injected diesel. Hence the air should be compressed to very high pressure. So the
compression ratio is more in diesel engine than that of petrol engine.
14. What do you mean by Scavenging in IC Engines?
The process of removing burnt exhaust gases from the combustion chamber of engine cylinder is
known as scavenging. Scavenging helps in reducing the dilution of fresh charge of mixture in the
IC engines.
15. Distinguish between external and internal combustion engines:
In external combustion engine, the combustion of fuel takes place outside the
cylinder Eg. Steam power plant.
In internal combustion engine, the combustion of fuel takes place inside the
cylinder. Eg. Petrol, Diesel and Gas Engines.
16. List some advantages of internal combustion engine over external combustion engines:

It requires less space.

It has a lower weight to power ratio because of its compact design.
Initial cost is less due to the absence of boiler and condenser.
17. What are the classifications of Engines?
External combustion engines

Internal combustion engines.

18. List out the terminology of I.C. Engines:

1. Cylinder Bore. 2. Stroke. 3. Top dead center (TDC) 4.Bottom dead center (BDC). 5. Clearance
volume. 6. Swept volume. 7. Cylinder volume. 8. Compression ratio.
19. Define bore of I.C Engine:
The inner diameter of the cylinder is known as bore and it is measured in mm.

20. Define stroke of the I.C. Engine:

The nominal distance through which the working piston moves between two successive reversals
of its direction of motion is called the stroke.
21. What do you mean by Top Dead Centre?
The position of the piston when during its linear travel, it is closest from the top of the cylinder,
is called Top Dead Centre.
22. What do you mean by Bottom dead Centre?
The position of the piston when during its linear travel, it is farthest from the top of the cylinder
is called Bottom Dead Centre.
23. Name cycle of operation of IC engines:
Suction stroke
Compression stroke
Power or Expansion stroke

Exhaust stroke.

24. What is the function of flywheel in the engines?

Flywheel takes care of the fluctuations in speed. It stores energy during power stroke and
releases it during the other strokes thus maintaining a constant output torque.
25. What is the function of the spark plug in engines?
At the end of the compression stroke, the air fuel mixture is ignited with the help of a spark plug
located on the cylinder head and combustion of mixture takes place.
26. Define Clearance volume:
The volume contained in the cylinder above the top of the piston when the piston is at TDC is
called the clearance volume and it is usually measured in cubic meter.
27. Define swept volume:
The volume swept by the piston when travelling from one dead center to another dead center is
called swept volume.
28. Define Total or Cylinder volume:
