INTRODUCTION
Presents a short review of the related
principles in the experiment
Ends with the objective of the experiment
Paragraph form
Should answer:
What kind of problem did you work on?
Why did you work on this problem?
What should the reader know or understand
when he/she is finished reading the report?
METHODOLOGY
Describe what you did.
Do not copy the procedure.
Do not write in the command form.
Do not give a stepwise discussion of what you
did.
Include a Figure of the set up. Discuss this
figure and number it as Figure 1 because it is
the first figure that appears in your report.
METHODOLOGY
Past tense
Passive voice
Good Example: Poor Example:

Standards of ammonia gas

were prepared by
collecting head space gas 1.Mix vinegar and water.
with a 60 mL syringe over
a diluted 25% ammonia 2.Set up burette with
solution analytical base
reagent, Merck
(Germany). 3.Drop NaOH to the
Trimethylamine gas was analyte
prepared from 2 g of
trimethylamine 4.Record readings
hydrochloride Sigma
(USA) that is reacted with
10 mL of a 10M NaOH
solution in a Schott Duran
250 mL filtering flask.
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
Understand the experiment beyond the
simple level of completing it.

Explain
Analyse
Interpret
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS
Analysis
What do the results indicate clearly?
What are the sources of error?
How do the results compare to the theory/hypothesis?
Interpretation
What is the significance of the results?
How do you justify that interpretation?
Suggested improvements for future research?
What references can compare these results to trends
described in the literature and to theoretical behavior?
DISCUSSION OF RESULTS (EXAMPLE)

Describe patterns
and relationships
that emerged and
why it happened.

Answer also the

guide questions here.
CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATION
Usually short in student lab reports
State what you know as result of lab
What contributed to errors
CONCLUSION (EXAMPLE)
Analysis showed that the measured pH of the
three conditioners has slight deviations to the
calculated pH when the potentials of a buffer
solutions are considered.
Errors may be taken to account since
conditioners are emulsions which are not very
soluble in water that caused the unconformities
in reading the electrode.

appearance in the text, numbered accordingly,
typed single-spaced within each entry and
